  • A great Chromebook to start with
I have been a Mac user for a decade. My MacBook pro was getting old and I wished for an upgrade/change. I didn't want to go for a Windows laptop, and didn't want to spend a fortune that I don't have on a new Pro. Chromebook was the best of both worlds. After some research and reviews this Chromebook book was the best solution. Good performance and descent battery, touch screen and good option of ports. I'm short you can't go wrong with this one if you are a new Chromebook user like me or just looking for an upgrade. A decent machine especially if you land it on offer. The new aspect ratio is something to get used to, but everything else is great interms of performance and looks. ... show more

  • Spin 713 from a developer's pov
I’m a Software Developer. Full stack developer if you may. But my eco-system is all about google. My last laptop reached its end-of-life and I was wondering if I can get by with a chromebook. I read the excellent reviews of the spin 713, the screen ratio was suitable for development purposes, It supported Linux Apps. And so.. decided to give it a try. I opted for the i5 11th gen + 8GB RAM + 256GB SSD. The first thing you notice when you open the package is how well built this chromebook is. Though I was also surprised by how heavy it felt in the hand. Then, one you turn it on - it turns on almost instantly. The next thing that you notice is how crisp and bright the screen is. Setting up was quick and easy. BUT: when I checked out the system actual specs, I found (see attached image) that the onboard memory was only 6.42 GB, not 8 GB as promised. As a developer - memory is REALLY important to me. I reached out to the seller, who insisted that this is an 8GB machine. Nothing I said or showed helped change his mind and he provided no reasonable explanation for this, or any explanation at all. I live outside the US and I didn’t want to pay the return shipping cost, So I decided to keep it and see what happens. But I gave the seller a “proper” rating. Installing my dev environment which consists of VS Code, LAMP, Node JS, MongoDB, React/Vue was as easy as it gets on a Debian flavored linux. It actually works! But the web server, be it node ir apache, is only accessible from a browser installed on the Linux machine as well, not from the chromebook browser (perhaps its something about the VM settings, didn’t check that yet). Memory did turn out to be an issue when running my developed application, not while developing it. Another 2GB would have worked wonders. However - I found that generally it works. You can connect the Spin 713 to an external monitor and it just works great. In general - many android apps run just fine on the chromebook. Most apps will launch is a mobile phone like size, but you can change it to tablet or even resize modes. For many apps its fine, for others - well, just use the web version if available. All reviews really put down the speakers on this machine. I must say - I didn’t find them that bad. They are not great, but good and loud enough for videos and conference calls. Especially if you put the machine in the “tent position” which actually makes the speakers forward facing. Last but not least, I have a remote windows server that I often log into in order to do some more serious work and manage my digital assets. Remote Desktoping to my server is really easy with the RD app and it's like the Spin 713 just turned into a windows computer.. Conclusion: You really have to like the chromebook android-flavor to be happy with a chromebook. It feels really limited at times, but it has the advantage of keeping your phone/computer synchronized and if you are a docs/sheets heavy user - chromebook is all you need and the Spin 713 does it great. From a developer’s point of view - I guess you can say it works. If you are working on small projects its just fine. Medium projects - it may stutter. Large projects - you’ll need to remote to a stronger machine. I Gave it 4 stars because: I was cheated out of 1.5 GB memory which I really need. The chrome OS is not really.. How shall I say… polished enough. But that may not be a Spin 713 issue. So all in all: I like the Spin 713. Chrome OS is growing on me. Still, I think I will pass this to my kid as soon as I can get my hands on the 16GB Enterprise version of it, which surprisingly is not available anywhere I checked. ... show more

  • great Chromebook
This is my second Chromebook in the past few years. The Acer Spin 713 is fast and works well. I have no real complaints other than at least one app on my previous Chromebook does not seem to work on the new Acer - my old Samsung Chromebook was able to run Android apps, and I use the app called Prey. This Android app does not work on the Acer. Other than that, I like everything about the Chromebook. The battery life is a little lower than my previous unit, most likely due to the Acer having a Core i5 CPU. ... show more

  • NO PRODUCT SUPPORT
Purchased this acer chromebook in July 2022. Worked well for a little over a year. Then one day it just wouldn't turn on...so I attempted to get support from Acer. That was a joke. They have a call in number for support. First off, good luck understanding what the support person is saying. Next they wanted $99 for a 1 year "warranty" in which they said over and over that they could have the issue fixed and have me back up and running in no time. That "tech Support" consisted of a hard to understand support person attempting to read off a script of do it yourself fixes that I had already found online for free. None of it worked. So that was a waste of time and money. Further they had no idea as to where I could send my chromebook in to have it looked at. After 3 attempts contacting acer, I finally got someone to explain to me where to send it to get looked at and possibly fixed. They wanted paid up front, not after diagnosing the problem. Yeah just go ahead and pay us $469.99 now and we will fix it and send it back. I declined, knowing that the original cost to produce this laptop new wouldn't cost that much. Acer is a joke, and if you pay over $600 for a laptop that suddenly stops working, especially when it is only 16 months old, the company should at least offer a low cost solution after they look at the laptop. This company is worthless, and now Im left with my only laptop that cannot turn on. I will file a complaint, and really wish I had known that Acer is a joke. Never again. ... show more

  • Extensions are not so hot, but Linux development Environment is great
I'm rewriting this review since spending some time recently with this laptop. I realize Chromebooks are being constantly updated and in many cases changed, especially the extensions and other applications. While a Chromebook out of the box is great for normal everyday computing, it's also, I find, just great for more advanced jobs, in my case, VNC over a SSH tunnel, which I simply must have. Earlier Chromebooks did this very well for me, but this one not so much. However, this version of Chromebook has a Linux Development Environment which is simply great. It expands the capabilities of a Chromebook to such an extent that this model is far and away my favorite laptop of all time. Don't bother spending money for a high end Linux computer, just buy this one and turn on Linux devel environment and you'll in essence have a Linux computer. I mean really, I'm blown away by this. Highly recommended. ... show more

  • exactly what I was hoping for
after trying out a modestly priced chromebook a couple of years ago, I found that I preferred its interface over other operating systems and that it suited all of my laptop needs. When it was time to upgrade, I was ready to go for a higher end machine with features like a powerful processor, large ram and storage, excellent display and backlit keys. I had read the reviews on the spin 713 and can say now that I am in posession of it, that it is everything I was looking for. ... show more
