Top Amazon Reviews

  • Satisfied Overall
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 4000-Series Capacity: 8GB/256GB Style: Notebook only
After pouring through the sea of reviews on over a dozen laptops, I finally realized I should have just stuck with the same reliable brand I used before. I managed to get 11 years out of my Acer 7741z and figured it was about time to upgrade as my screen started to flicker and even the simplest webpages maxed out resources. It also didn't help that I had been running Windows 7 far too long without service. I ordered my Aspire 5 on a Tuesday and received it on Thursday, despite choosing free shipping as a non Prime member. Overall I'm pleased with it. The Ryzen 5 is a powerhouse, yet it runs cool unless you can figure out how to get it revved up, though I'm not gamer. It's probably more CPU than I'll ever need. The fan occasionally comes on, and might be too loud for some, but I would say it is quiet. Paired with the SSD, Windows 10 boots up super fast and updates take minutes compared to days. Another great plus for this machine is the ability to upgrade. Since the Ryzen 5 is at the high end of laptop CPUs, the RAM is the likely bottleneck for resource hungry applications. Many laptops on the market, especially those with a slim design, have RAM soldered to the motherboard, limiting upgrades or making them impossible entirely. The Aspire 5 comes with 8GB (maybe there are some that come with more?), but it's upgradable to 32GB. The build quality is decent and the thin design keeps the weight down (4lbs vs 7.3 for my 7741z). The compromise, however, means foregoing the optical drive, quick release battery, and - probably the most disappointing for me - the SD card slot. A few reviewers complained about the keyboard, but I'm pretty happy with it as I have tested and reached my top typing speed. Perhaps in order to feature the Ryzen 5, Acer had to cut corners on the quality of the display. It isn't bad, but there's definitely room for improvement. Other laptops will probably have sharper, more vivid displays with better dynamic range, namely anything Apple. That said, and despite being an amateur photographer, it's not quite a deal breaker for me, but definitely the Aspire 5's biggest shortcoming. But where this laptop lacks in the display, it somewhat makes up for in sound, which is clearly audible with background noise. Also note that the Aspire 5 does not have a touch screen, but for me that's more of a bonus feature. Battery life is also probably inferior to the competition. Anything video will cut your battery life down to 2-3 hours. I haven't yet tested it with the battery saver in Windows. Without video streaming, battery life is significantly longer. Other reviewers complained about Windows 10s, but mine had a regular Windows 10 install. I was concerned about it too, but a little research revealed that Windows 10s can easily be converted to an ordinary installation of Windows 10. I will be updating this review if there are any hardware issues. Otherwise no news is good news. (9/27/2020) Pros: Ryzen 5 is powerful Slim design w/decent build Decent keyboard Memory and storage upgradable (up to 32GB RAM) Cons: Not the most vibrant screen Battery life might be less than the competition No optical drive – but that's pretty much standard nowadays No SD card slot ... show more

  • Bad battery and issues with Amazon customer service (1st time) :(
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 4000-Series Capacity: 8GB/256GB Style: Notebook only
So I've had a number of great Acer computers and bought this upgrade to our last. We had it for less than a month and the battery stopped working. Luckily I actually needed to unplug it and immediately it turned off. We were using it for distance learning for the kids and I might not have moved it for months. Other than that it worked great. I actually had a bad experience with Amazon's customer service. I went to Acer first because you get a little sheet that tells you too and they walked me through how to reset the battery. It didn't work and they said that it was under warranty and I could send it in to be fixed. I said I'd just trade it in or return it seeing as I was still in my return window with Amazon, hoping I'd gotten a lemon. When I contacted Amazon they demanded a customer contact ID so they could look up my conversation with Acer. I wasn't provided this and did not know I needed to ask (you do, they don't just give it to you). They made me sit on hold for 45 minutes while they tried to get in touch with Acer to double check that I had contacted them. They never did get a hold of them. They then gave me some troubleshooting tips that included breaking INTO the laptop.... that can't be right. And taking apart the connection to the lithium battery. YIKES! That can't be right and NOT something Acer had told me to do (there is a hole in the back you stick a paperclip through to reset it for anyone who wants to know.) I was looking to just exchange the laptop but after all of this and the snippy unfriendly service from the Amazon service rep, I just returned it instead. I then had to reach out to Acer again to make sure that the Lithium battery was safe to ship (I wasn't told to do this, was just trying to guess what they would need from the return instructions.) I got my customer contact ID for sure (Acer was VERY nice, again) and then tried to give it to Amazon. This customer service rep told me they didn't need it and that I could just send it in, no questions asked..... *sigh* Happy holidays everyone! ... show more

  • Four Months Later it will no longer charge
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 4000-Series Capacity: 8GB/256GB Style: Notebook only
My first impressin of the laptop was favorable. It is sleek, lightweight and easy to use. The monitor quality is excellent and make it feel like you are in person while holding virtual Google meetings. Four months after purchase the laptop stopped charging. I called tech support at Acer and the agent was very helpful and said that he would send us a new power cord. The power cord arrived 4 days later, and unfortunately was not the solution to the problem. Today I chatted online with an Acer tech support agent and was told that I would have to package up the laptop and send it off for repair. This is very discouraging as I have already been without my laptop for over a week and sending it off for repair means it will likely be another month to 6 weeks without my work tool. Very disheartened at the quality of this product when it needs to be repaired less than 6 months after purchase and especially while I'm still making payments on it to my credit card company. So, I am still paying on this computer and their support just said, "send it to us for repair" - they provide no shipping label, no packaging and do not pay for the shipping costs. REALLY? This is terrible customer service and even worse warranty service. I have 15 months left to pay on this computer that I haven't been able to use for several weeks while I seek help to get the packaging and shipping done since I am homebound. I am so frustrated and discouraged. Will never buy another ACER product. ... show more
