  • Great casual combat flight game - not really a simulator
Platform For Display: Xbox One
For those expecting it to be a simulator, look elsewhere. This is just a fun causal combat flight game. Some of the missions are excruciating or difficult at first, but the beauty is you can use Free Mission and play them over and over again to farm credits (you'll need to do this or play multiplayer in order to unlock the aircraft tree). Fleet Destruction was kicking my butt at first until I figured out what to do, and then after farming the snot out of this mission, it is second nature to me and I actually use it as a skills refresher if I hadn't played AC7 in awhile. The EML forces you to aim better. While some of the strategy guides recommend getting the F-22 as soon as possible, I'll do one better. Fork out the real money for the CFA-44 Nosferatu. It's not as maneuverable as the ADF-11 Raven, but has the two special weapons that are really above the rest: The twin EML launchers and the ADMM multi-purpose missiles. Each EML launcher takes 7 seconds to reload but that means if you time your shots you can inflict more damage at a faster rate than say using the F-18 with a single EML. The ADMM is a game changer for ground attack/defense missions as it can lock multiple air or ground targets and take them out very quickly. Remember in the first Avengers movie where Iron Man encounters the Chitauri as they invade NYC, and he fires off those miniature guided missiles? Yep, just like that. The ADMM has a much longer range than the standard missiles and you can fire off maybe 1 or 2 salvos with the full number of targets automatically selected. It takes awhile to reload but is worth it. I used the CFA-44 to take out the key enemies in the last few missions, almost too quickly like it was a cheat. Once you beat the game, it unlocks the X02S Wyvern. But the CFA-44 and ADF-11 are purchased with real money if you so choose to do so. I love flight combat games so it was worth it to me. Overall: 5/5 stars, there are some frustrating parts of the game but it is a great game for those interested in a casual flight combat game. ... show more

  • Even better than I expected
Platform For Display: Xbox One
I waited for this game for so long, like many fans of the franchise. Often, when a sequel is released after so much anticipation has been built up, it can't help but be disappointing; the audience's expectations have grown to the point where they can not be satisfied. I feared that I would feel this way about Ace Combat 7. Ace Combat 7 completely blew my expectations out of the water. It's gameplay is honestly the best the franchise has ever been. Gone is the canned dogfight mode quicktime events, and control is once again in your hands. The way planes handle in this game is so great. You can practically feel the pressure as you execute maneuvers. The new High G maneuvers are an excellent way to still pull cool action movie-esque stunts while leaving the player in control. The world now feels alive, with the clouds, wind currents, and turbulence. I was afraid that some of these things would be annoying, but they have been used in just the right amount, and have managed to balance the fine line between being too little to be non-relevant and too much to be annoying. In some missions they actually made the gameplay much more interesting, its clear the devs really thought about how they would implement these systems. There is also so much gorgeous attention to detail in this game that it adds so much to the immersion. Flying through a cloud covers your canopy in water droplets, and potentially even icing. The lighting model is extremely good, and the way shadows are cast on your aircraft or in your cockpit, with each individual part of the cockpit casting shadows on everything else, makes everything very lifelike. Little touches in obscure situations are great too, one time, I was flying very close to sea level and destroyed an enemy ship. As I passed through the rising cloud of fire and steam from the water, I was impressed to get a splatter of water on my canopy from the sea water thrown up in the explosion. Finally, the story. Is it ridiculous? Yeah, pretty much so, but exactly what you'd want from an Ace Combat game. The manner in which it is presented though, is top notch. Voice actors are excellent, and line delivery is pretty much perfect from all characters. The dialogue is actually pretty believable, at least compared to the other games in the franchise. The previous games in the series are referenced and paid homage to, but not to the point where it feels like fan service, and basically all the references actually make sense or serve a purpose. The most I can say without spoiling anything is that I actually felt a little emotionally touched by the end, which is the most I can say about a video game in years. Overall, I would 100% recommend this game. To fans of the franchise, this is the sequel you've been waiting for. To new comers, the gameplay here is still very fun, even without any background, but I would recommend playing Ace Combat 4 and 5 if possible before hand, as they provide a nice background for what is happening in this game. ACB5 is probably the most relevant, if I had to pick one. Easily a five star game. If I could give it more, I would. ... show more
