Description

The Onyx Outdoor A/M-24 Automatic/Manual Inflatable Life Jacket is U.S. Coast Guard approved Type V life jacket with Type III performance. It has utility pockets for a space Co(2)cylinder, waterproof camera or other gear. It converts from automatic/manual to manual only inflation. It is made from heavy-duty denier nylon ripstop and denier nylon oxford on pockets and protective cover. It has a padded, fleece lined pocket for sunglasses; and has padded air mesh for additional comfort on lower panels, back and straps. ONLY first impressions. Will use in Florida Keys next month snorkeling. Just unpacked unit today. Well built and solidly stitched. I expect it to work as I intend, which is as a 'buddy' with solo snorkeling off beaches while the rest of my vacation party lounge about on the sand, seeing me bob about in the distance but uninterested in joining me swimming and not capable of making any swimming rescue. As a Water Safety Instructor Trainer, I can self-rescue in most situations. But wanted my wife to have lessened concerns about me bobbing about. This looks like it will not be cumbersome to wear while snorkeling, but I will test fit in lap pool before. A few items that I would have done to make improvements, mostly up to the manufacturer. First, the D-ring for hanging things is on the same side as the emergency flotation activation lanyard. Hanging anything off it would prevent fumble-free activation, IMO. Second, the webbing down back and around waist is insufficient. It needs and under the crotch webbing from the intersection of the back/waist down and around to one side (where the D-ring should be!) so that when inflated, it does not ride up and off person activating it. I do NOT think that the average person using it would maintain a hand on the webbing at the front buckle and keep pulling down. That eliminates two handed swimming to surface, IMO. Third, the excess webbing that is not needed, once the waist is cinched for your size, will wind up being flapping in the water. The 'keeper' band for it is insufficient. It slides about too easily along the belting and actually can let the loose end of waist belt fly free. Since I'm the only one using this, I'll find a tighter clip mechanism that will keep it 'stowed'. Fourth, I would make this unit in YELLOW, not red, so to provide more WARNING VISIBILITY during use, but before activation. This would be helpful for folks snorkeling at and under surface of water to be more visible to boaters for better water safety, IMO. Once activated, the flotation bladder is VERY visible YELLOW. Lastly, I strongly suggest you buy two gas cartridges, in addition to the one provided with the PFD. Practice with one cartridge so you know how much this adds to your buoyancy and brings you back to the surface. That keeps one in the PFD and one spare, in case you use it or it accidentally activates. You need to have this ready to do; not wanting for a replacement cartridge. I used this for the first time yesterday while kayaking. Perfect pfd for me. It was almost like I wasn't wearing one. I chose this one over the In-Sight because I thought the attached D ring was a more efficient accessory than the ability to see CO2 cartridge status through a clear window. Why? Because I'm going to inspect the vest before I go out, and instead of looking through the window, I'll just pull back the cover a bit. The D-ring is, in my opinion, an important place to hang some (or at least one) need accessories, such as your whistle. If you're a recreational kayaker, with no intent of whitewater or surf kayaking, this may be the pfd you're looking for. Update. I recently bought a rearming kit, because I wanted to try this thing out. Just in case I ever really needed to use it, I wanted to know what to expect. I jumped in the pool, quit trying to float, and pulled the cord. Wow! does it inflate quickly, and it keeps me afloat just fine. I'm 6'1", about 220 lbs, and it does the job. You will float, and face up. And, rearming is a breeze. I feel even better now that I've tried it out, that this was a great buy. ... show more

This is actually an excellent product, but please MAKE SURE to order the correct replacement cartridge with the GREEN TAB (or GREEN PIN). The correct one is #1350 / #K301. There is another recharge kit that says it's for the M-24, but it does NOT have the GREEN TAB. This incorrect one is #1354 / #K305. Also, FYI, the instructions say to test the vest when you first get it - but it only comes with one cartridge, so you will need to buy another cartridge WITH THE GREEN TAB to replace it after you do the test. ... show more

I used the Onyx M-24 Manual Inflatable Vest for an intentional parachute jump into the St. John's River, Palatka, Florida, this past weekend. It is light weight and easy to arrange around my harness. I also like the fact that because it is manually activated - I only need to pull the cord in an emergency. Bought this 2 years ago, but never wore it on my pontoon boat. Recently thought it might be a good idea, especially when I'm out alone. Thought it felt a little "puffy", like it was partially inflated. When I returned I opened it up to see if I could flatten it. Surprise! There was no gas cartridge. I assume it must have been shipped without the cartridge screwed on, and I tossed it out with the packing. But too long ago. So now I have to get a new rearming kit.
