Description

Lina and Phil Hunter have shared a strong bond since they were teenagers and he saved her life, so when Lina's mother cautions her to be on guard against a new love interest she sees in her astrological chart, Lina laughs her off. Her marriage may have been under extra stress lately, dealing with a rebellious teenager, but Lina's never even looked at another man, well besides her daughter's psychiatrist, Dr. Drayton, but that's more in awe. When a betrayal shakes the foundation of her marriage, Lina begins confiding in the child psychiatrist, blurring the lines between whether she or her daughter is the patient. As a mutual attraction grows, Lina begins to question whether the boy she fell in love with twenty-five years earlier still exists. Laura Branchflower is a compelling new voice in contemporary fiction with believable characters dealing with real life struggles. A White Picket Fence is a family drama. Read more

  • Completely captivated with this flawed cast of characters
4.5 stars. There's a lot going on in this story and as it delves behind the Hunter household, the betrayal that rocks Lina and Phil's marriage is something that affects everyone. The timeline centers right around a rough spot in their life and the aftermath. What we don't see much of is the 25 years before which are assumed to be pretty happy and carefree. I found myself deeply immersed in these characters' lives and completely fascinated by them. Despite Phil's actions, it was always apparent to me that he absolutely loves his wife Lina and always has. They have 3 children - Megan, Katie and Logan. After a lot of thinking about this book and exploring the author's website, I understand these people so much better now. For Phil, he lives a tightly controlled life and he's been Lina's rock ever since she was a teenager. It's bred in him to be a provider and protector. He succeeds in everything - athletics, college, his career, parenting and being a husband. He lives the life that many others envy and has the spoils of labor to prove it. Megan, the oldest, is identical to Phil in so many ways - overachiever, confident, athletic, etc and loves to make Phil proud of her. Logan, the youngest, partially resembles Lina in personality but has many of Phil's attributes, too. However, Logan wants to please both of his parents and strives to meet Phil's expectations. It is Katie who throws a wrench in things. She does not cave to Phil's demands and she does not respond to his method of discipline, withdrawing further from the family. What's difficult about this is that Phil can't get through to her and Katie spirals downwards. Lina is helpless to make things better because she supports Phil, but sees that things are crumbling regardless. This is where the rift begins because Lina's emotional reserves are tied up in Phil and the family as an entire unit whereas Phil can compartmentalize everything. Lina seeks help outside of the household for Katie and in the form of Dr. Nick Drayton. Phil is complex. I realize he's both hypocritical and flawed. He's also an alpha male with controlling tendencies. He has no room for vulnerability and when things get tough, he tightens his control and pushes through. He's an attorney, so he's not afraid of confrontation. Unfortunately not everyone in his family is receptive to this, including Katie. He butts heads with her and even Lina, especially once Dr. Drayton is able to get through to Katie. So while I think Phil's excuse for an escape is flimsy at best with absolutely no grounds for justification whatsoever, I can understand how he reached a breaking point from his perspective and sought comfort from a source that viewed him as a stellar superstar in every way. Family and marriage are complicated. There's a 25 year history here and it's not simply between Lina and Phil. With the kids thrown in the mix, there's a web of inter dynamics that threatened to crumble. Even Lina herself is not looking at Phil like he can solve the problems of the family anymore. Did I hate Phil for what he did? Absolutely. It was pure selfishness with no regard for the consequences. I loved Lina. She is not perfect, but she is real and authentic and I was Team Lina all the way. She may not have reacted the way a lot of other women would, but Lina has this tendency to look away when things get tough. Not because she's not tough, but because there is a former experience that scarred her and Phil was there for her ever since. There's a part of me that really rooted for her to share something more with Dr. Nick Drayton because he was most certainly receptive and open to her company in a flattering and nonjudgmental way. However, Nick would definitely make comments about Lina's relationship with Phil that I found unnerving even if there was some truth rooted in there. Even with everything Phil was doing wrong (which seemed like a lot in this book because of the turbulent time) and his seeming lack of sensitivity, I never doubted their connection. I don't know if he sufficiently proved his renewed sense of commitment and love because Phil is one of those guys that is rather untouched by other people's opinions, but he is also determined and refuses to accept failure. The side characters in this book are interesting, to say the least. I felt they were all very extreme in their opinions. Lina's mother Alice was incredibly aggravating, how she felt that Lina was overreacting and expected her to get over it. Lina's friend Diane was annoying, too, where she thought Phil's lapse in judgment was just a tiny blip on the radar. Adele was the only one who showed the appropriate intensity of emotion to match what Lina was feeling. Even Nick, who tried to remain neutral, had moments where he crossed lines (although I liked Nick overall). Getting to know these others really does highlight more of the life centering around the Hunters, especially contrasting how Lina grew up versus Phil and where Lina and Phil choose to compromise within their own home. So in short, this book consumed me. The author does a fantastic job of highlighting everyone's involvement. I still think about this story for days after finishing, analyzing and rethinking everything. Fortunately after this, there's a sequel that I was happy to dive right into without interruptions. ... show more

  • Deeply Captivating and Flawed Characters
4.5 STARS “Have you ever considered the possibility that a flawed version of me is better for you than a perfect version of anyone else?” WOW WOW WOW! Loved this book by a completely new-to-me author. I feel a binge read coming on! Stories about married couples are my catnip and I owe a debt of gratitude to Goodreads reader Katie L. for bringing this book to my attention. Phil and Lina have a seemingly perfect marriage. According to Lina's mother, they are actually soulmates, destined to be together forever. Other than the adolescent troubles plaguing one of their daughters, their life seems able to withstand anything. But Lina's growing suspicions about her beloved husband become all too real. Phil, the perfect husband and father, is not so perfect after all. Will his careless actions destroy all of their lives? "You are the only woman I will ever love.” I was simply swept away by this story. This might be one of my favorite books so far this year. I went through many emotions while reading 'A White Picket Fence.' I could not stop thinking about these characters. None of them are perfect and in fact Phil and Lina are both very flawed characters. Phil especially is deeply flawed. While I did not necessarily agree with Lina's decision, the author captivated me and I could understand why Lina chose the path she did. The entire supporting case was flawed and some were not so likeable. Phil angered me many times but at the same time, he fascinated me. “I betrayed you.” He lowered his eyes to their clasped hands, drawing in a deep breath before raising his tear-filled eyes to hers. “And I will regret it every day for the rest of my life. But it doesn’t have to be the end for us.” This book has a depth to the characters and the story line that really captivated me. If you enjoy family dramas and a sexy, angsty romance, then I hope you will give this book a chance. I absolutely adored the story and the Epilogue was everything I hoped for. This was my first book by Laura Branchflower and I am immediately starting 'Swimming Naked", the next book about these characters. I can't get enough! “You broke my heart.” “I know.” He kissed her again. “But I’m going to fix it.” ... show more

  • Emotional!
This series is so well written, it makes me want to - alternatively - hug and smack every one of the characters. I love the build up of the story. It’s a hot button topic, for certain. Every time I read this series (I’ve read it a few times), I am left with a bit of anger that certain topics were not addressed. I like stories that are realistic with characters I can identify with. *potential spoilers* A few things really stick with me: 1. There’s a short few apologies for this ‘one mistake’. In my opinion, one mistake = one drunken encounter = one night. Multiple times per week, over four months, is an entire relationship. This is a crucial piece of the story that should have been examined further. 2. For all the talk of Catholicism, there’s no mention of confession, guilt or The Church’s forgiveness. Religion was a key topic throughout but the hypocrisy was ignored. 3. In this contemporary period, we all know STDs are dangerous yet there’s no mention of testing or pressure on the husband to examine how he put his wife at risk. * Condoms - one liner about how condoms reduce his pleasure. In real life, this would be a huge, huge issue and burden to overcome. Leaving this vague explains the pregnancy and supports the drama, but because Lina does not push this issue, it weakens her character. She just accepts it without argument. Despite the things that upset me, I really do love the story. When you want to throw your kindle across the room, you know it’s a keeper. This series would make a great mini series! ... show more
