Description

Fans of the traditional Regency Romances of Georgette Heyer and the more emotional Regencies of Mary Balogh will enjoy this unforgettable romance from New York Times bestselling author Candice Hern. Jack Raeburn, a longtime pleasure-seeking rakehell, is now unexpectedly the Marquess of Pemerton, a title inherited after the tragic deaths of his father and older brothers. Unfortunately, he inherited a mountain of debts along with the title, and believes his only option is to marry an heiress. He finds a surprising champion in Lady Mary Haviland, a spinster of unremarkable looks and a charming personality, who has decided to help him find a bride. When Jack discovers that Mary has a large fortune, their comfortable friendship takes an unexpected new direction. By turns witty and emotional, A CHANGE OF HEART follows the path of two wounded souls from friendship to betrayal to redemption. The ballrooms of London and the rugged cliffs and coves of the South Devon coast come alive in this poignant tale of the healing power of love. "Ms. Hern mesmerizes us with the blistering emotional intensity of an unforgettable love story. A powerful and compelling romance. A keeper, by the most discriminating of definitions." – Romantic Times "This book is an exquisite journey. A joyous, passionate tale full of life and laughter." – The Romance Reader Read more

  • Unsatisfying End
Overall this was really well written. The story line had some depth instead of relying on the time worn 2-dimensional world of a simple romance novel. The characters had room to grow, and there were somewhat decent secondary plotlines. The middle of the book deepened the storyline and gave greater empathy for the heroine, anger for the despicable "hero" (which is better than no vested buy in for the character), and a bit of hope for a "justifiable" end. Unfortunately, the storyline fell short at the end. All of her suffering, all of his manipulation and BLAME CASTING on her, yet the author gave the jerk his HEA. All he had to do was show up, say he was sorry, and she BOUGHT it??! I don't care how haggard he looked, that could've been caused by the felt loss of her fortune. I needed at LEAST another chapter or two of him doing penance and showing remorse by more than a couple of crocodile tears. And after the heroine spends those many months of re-fortifying herself, one can only think that she is as vulnerable as ever by this easy capitulation. My conclusion was that the author must've run out of steam or ideas. I wanted this to be a 5-star, or at least a 4-star. But with an ending that leaves me wanting to punch the stank out of the hero, i could only muster the will to give it 3. ... show more

  • Beautiful emotional
When Black Jack Raeburn’s father, his two elder brothers, and his only male nephew died in a boating accident, he becomes the Marquis of Pemerton. Not only is this charming rake dealing with the grief of his family, but he discovers that the family money is virtually gone, heavy mortgages on all the various estates. He needs a wealthy bride before anyone discovers how desperate he is to marry. He finds unexpected assistance from tiny Lady Mary Haviland, a woman who has a predilection for befriending rakes and rogues. Because she has been told her whole life that she was ugly and useless, Mary never expects any of the men to court her, despite enjoying their flirtations. It isn’t long before she and Jack become close friends. Unfortunately he discovers just how wealthy she is and proposes, never letting her know his own financial situation. Nor does he claim to love her, not wanting to lie to her face. Sadly the best laid plans of well-intended rakes tend to go awry, leaving Jack with his second jilting and Mary running not only from Jack, but her father’s abusive memories. This is such an emotional tale, so much angst that it would overwhelm a story in the hands of a lesser talent. Hern weaves an intricate path from humor to angst to love and back again. I, like Mary, have a fondness for rakes and rogues who have a deeply hidden heart of slightly tarnished gold. A secondary romance between Olivia, Mary’s companion, and Edward, Jack’s uncle (the man who taught him everything he knew about living life to the fullest) is delightful. We also catch up with Robert and Emily from the first book in the series. Melodramatic in all the best ways. 5 out of 5. ... show more

  • Urghhhh
I absolutely loved this book...until the end. I mean Jack did not even try to piece together what had happened until 6 weeks later. What an idiot. Not to mention that instead of looking for the woman he "loved", he went back to London and screwed every female he could find for 6 weeks. I was so disappointed in him. It was not like they were never together, they were in engaged for crying out loud. I just got so mad reading about his "entertainment" versus caring where his fiance was. Then he shows up and she forgives him, which I can understand because she did not know what he did and she did try very hard not to be found but my gosh. If I would have found out my fiance would have rather slept with a different woman every night for 6 weeks versus finding me and making things right, I would not have been so forgiving. Mary already had emotionally issues, wonder how she felt when she found out about Jack's extracurricular activities. Don't get me wrong, this book is great until that part. The whole time I am reading this and he is complaining about Suzanne, I kept thinking that you are doing the exact same thing to Mary and Jack never noticed it. It was hard for me to read 'An Affair of Honor' where Jack is so nice to Sedge and not think of how I felt when I read the end of this one. I do love Mary though. It is a good read if you can get through wanting to hurt Jack at the end. ... show more

  • A true change of heart
I can't remember the last time I was so moved by a story. Especially a regency romance. Such light predictable reads, but this..it's hard to describe how well all the ways our past and pride and shame can warp our feeling regarding self worth. The hurt and pain in both Mary and Jack so mirrored each other that each would escape into armoured feelings rather that trust anyone. This trip could have been as true today and almost any time between then and now. If you've ever been even close to the kind of situation either faced here you can gain strength for yourself in the honest telling in this book. Book one was a bit light with easily overcome problems but this is so deep and true I could not leave. Was at times even painful to read but so well told it proves so many things we think insurmountable can be contoured. If set in modern time this would work just as well. Read with on open , not cynical mind and enjoy the journey into finding how strong we can be. Trust, think, enjoy!! ... show more
