  • Bright
I needed to add lights in the low corridor’s ceiling, so I grabbed these to supplement other round 6” diameter light fixtures I purchased. The listing makes no mention about it, but according to the sticker, they are actually Intertek tested and certified light fixtures, legal in USA and Canada, so your building inspector shouldn’t give you a hard time. And yes, you need a building permit to install them in most jurisdictions (I can only think of one where you don’t). The listing alsomakes no mention about it, but they are actually suitable for damp locations, such as terraces and balconies. They come with gaskets and waterproof connections. They need a hole in the ceiling, and come with a paper pattern for tracing. The spring clips allow for tolerance in typical sheetrock thicknesses. They come with very conveniently hinged cans, that house a 120V step down power adapter on one side, and European type splice connectors in the openable side. I haven’t installed it physically at the target location yet. The cheap hole saw set that I got from Harbor Freight years ago only goes up to 5” diameter, so I need a dedicated bit. I am posting a photo or two pending further developments. Once installed, I would post updates. I noted very few people know what the Vine program is, so Lengthy Disclosures follow: I objectively reviewed this merchandise in exchange for a “free” sample. The quotes indicate that it’s not exactly free, as it’s treated as income, and in my tax bracket, I would need to pay a sizeable chunk of it back to Uncle Sam. Nor am I eligible to return some really abysmal or poorly chosen products, as I would normally do, instead I am stuck with them. Be assured of my lack of bias, as I have nothing to gain. I must admit, I gradually learned to distrust Vine reviews myself. When I pick products, I start by reading their reviews, and naturally some early reviews often came from Vine, and these reviews often turned out to be of very poor quality, often directly contradicted by my own experience later. No wonder, I don’t attach much credence to them, even though I am one of those reviewers. Why is that? I can only guess the reasons, but let me share five of them here, as follows: First, Vine reviewers are consumers, not professional testers, and that shows. Many items would require a calibrated testing equipment, a proper testing procedure, or at least another similar item to compare and the right procedure in order to get any meaningful verification of their performance. Even a simple thermometer is impossible to review, unless you have another one to compare, and then does the quality of the latter make it a suitable and objective tool for such a measurement? Second. Vine reviewers are rushed to review a sufficient ratio of received products in order to remain current. That introduces constrains. Certain items that e.g. require installation or other time-absorbing activities neither can be quickly assessed, as their qualities would only be verified in a quite involved and time-consuming way. This lamp is a good example. Many aspects, such as e.g. longevity, reliability, battery life, or generally durability are by definition impossible to assess quickly. I recently revisited and updated some of my reviews going back a decade, but few reviewers do that. Third, Vine reviewers are more likely to order items that they either don’t need quickly. I must admit I am guilty of ordering spares that I anticipated I would need in the future, e.g. a toner for my printer. Naturally, I won’t throw the old one away and break the seal, just to produce a timely review, so my review becomes superficial. Therefore, your chance of getting an accurate review from someone who is already printing is much higher. Forth, the “free” receipt means that the lower income tax bracket a reviewer is in, the lower is the penalty for ordering stuff mindlessly. That in turn may mean that neither those reviewers are sufficiently knowledgeable about them, nor have enough brains to assess them appropriately. Naturally, your chance of getting an accurate review from someone who actually needed the item, and researched it carefully before spending their own money earned commensurately with the value of services they provide to their fellow men, is much higher. Fifth, Vine reviewers are just people, and they often cannot be trusted. E.g. I just received an item, which dimensions were certified by several previous Vine reviewers, and the same dimensions listed by the advertiser. What’s the risk of getting it wrong? It turned out that they were all false, and the previous reviewers did not bother to measure the item, they just copied them from the item’s description. Which way are these Vine ratings skewed, if at all? Very often I see reviewers penalize a product, because either they didn’t read the description, or because they thought a certain word means something else than a dictionary definition. They often admit it openly, which I found hilarious. This is the era of proudly displaying one’s ignorance and blaming helpless sellers for it. However, I give the five-star rating to items that I only unpacked, examined, and found matching the listing’s description, but didn’t have time to use yet, and only later I come back to update my review and lower the rating, if I find the product disappointing. This second step is not required for Vine reviewers, and I often see Vine reviewers promised an update in reviews dated months and even years ago, to no avail. Is there a risk of interference by sellers? They certainly aren’t happy with bad ratings, and they sometimes reach out offering “a refund,” and since we didn’t pay anything, it means that they would pay us for fraudulently changing the review. I don’t think any Vine reviewer would risk responding to such an offer, because the incentive to remain in the program is much stronger. ... show more

  • These are wonderful- bright and loaded with options
This twelve pack is really great. These are all 6", and 5cct lights that are fully dimmable. They are 12W at full brightness, which is really bright. But they work with my Lutron 153 dimmer, so I can tone them down. Still, it's nice to have the brightness, if and when you want it. These are also IC rated, so they can come in contact with insulation- which is great for my basement that has a suspended ceiling that has insulation right behind it. Installation is straight forward, and the connectors easy to use. Make sure to set the color temp that you want when you install it, and that all are the same temp. Otherwise you have to go back in, to reset the color temp- there is a switch directly on the light. Having five color temp options is really great. I have a bar in the basement, and so chose the "warmest" setting, so no one gets blinded! Being able to keep the brightness down with the dimmer also helps set the mood. The price point for this 12 pack is excellent. And, with 5cct, full dimness, easy installation and IC rated, this is a five star package. ... show more

  • Even illumination across the surface. The selectable color temps seem correct.
Very nicely made, easy to install 6-inch thin LED lights. I really like the ability to fit them in the space of ½ inch sheetrock. That means I don’t have to worry about placing them where is rafter crosses the path. You will still need to find a space for the power box. That’s usually pretty easy. The selectable color temperature matches other lamps I have in the same room, and most people can’t tell I have 3 different brands of lights in the same ceiling. They haven’t been installed for long, so only time will tell if they have any flicker or fading issues. Right now, they look great. ... show more

  • At 5,000K these lights are extremely bright, the hold well
I ordered these to retro fit 6 double 48" fluorescent lights. I only ended up using 8 out of 12 and it is twice as bright and the lighting is more event. Additionally, I used a standard 6" Hole Saw, and wired them all on 14-2 Romex with no issues. The only thing you will need is a box entry clamp for the wires, you can get them at any Home Depot Store cheaply. I averaged about 45 mins per light on the install, complete. These are great, and I would highly recommend changing your fluorescent bulbs to LED, it makes an incredible difference, and it uses a lot less power. I was pulling around 11.2 amps with the lights all on previously, with the LEDs I am only pulling 6 amp total. ... show more
