  • Great beginner laser engraver
this is simple to set up and you can get excellent results

  • Good Engraver for a beginner
I was really interested in trying out laser engraving and laser cutting, but I did not want to drop thousands of dollars on the big named big machines before I learned more about it and tested it out to see if I liked it. This machine was a little tedious to assemble, but not too bad. Big hands and small parts don’t always agree. The hardware itself was pretty self-explanatory as far as assembly goes. The software and how to get everything right is going to be the trick, I think. It does come with software and some pre-done designs, but I am more interested in my own designs, that is what is probably going to take me the longest to perfect. It is going to take me a while to get fully versed at using this machine, but I can see where I may want to upgrade in the near future. I will note that when you are engraving, even though it says it filters the air and dust, I would recommend using it in a well-ventilated space. Overall, I think this is a great beginner engraver, but if you want to get serious about it and start designing some crazy stuff, I think going up a size with a little more power may be better. For the price, it is a great place to start with a smaller investment. The one thing you will need that is not included is the cutting back plate so you don’t burn your work table. ... show more

  • Engrave nearly anything
The media could not be loaded. I received and am reviewing 5W Laser Engraver, Official Creality Falcon Laser Engraving & Cutting Machine, Built-in Fan Laser Cutter for Craft Design with Wood, Acrylic, Metal, Leather, etc, 17" *16" This is my first engraver of any type. I think of it as a printer that prints on most any surface that can be etched with a laser. The possibilities are endless for monogramming or design of items. Using this engraver is similar to using a printer. You need software to tell it what to do. It can accept input via USB cable to a USB-C port on the Falcon, or via a TF card inserted into the Falcon. Because I have only Mac computers, I used LightBurn software. The first 30 days are free, after the free trial it cost $60 for GECODE support. The engraver is fast and quiet. There is some smoke smell when in use due to the laser burning the design onto the target item, however the built-in fan and filter greatly reduces the odor. The box included the engraver preassembled components, attachment hardware and tools required to assemble, a user guide, safety guide, safety goggles, cleaning cloth, a TF card and USB adapter to read the card in a computer, a set of stickers, two thin wood sheets, extra filters and a power adapter with power cord. (see pic) Assembly was easy. There are only 10 parts to connect and all the parts fit together and attached easily, once I understood how the first two parts were attached. (see pic) More about this later. The TF card includes a PDF of the manual, a table of suggested power and speed for different media, tutorials on LightBurn and LaserGRBL software and a starter sample gecode file. I recommend viewing the PDF assembly instructions in the manual on the TF card. The printed manual is too small to clearly illustrate the way the belts on the Y-axis side rails go below the rollers and over the gear on the X-axis assembly. It is much easier to see and can be zoomed in the PDF. I didn’t see the red arrows indicating how to route the belts and had to redo the attachment of the t-nut retainers. No big deal, but look first at the PDF and avoid the mistake. To engrave (I still want to say “print”) from the TF card without a USB connection, simply insert the card and power on the Falcon. It automatically reads the newest gecode file and prepares to engrave. A press of the function button and the Falcon starts outlining the print area in preview mode so you can see the area to be engraved. Another press of the button begins the engraving process. Another press toggles the pause/resume mode and a long press cancels the engraving. I tested engraving, after finishing the assembly, with the sample file, which engraves the Creality logo. (see video) The sample is sized to fit the included wood sheets, but I wanted to test on paper first. Well, remember the suggested power and speed settings mentioned above, they are predefined in the sample file, apparently for wood, not paper. It basically made a stencil on the paper. Now I know. It’s good that I had a thick sheet of aluminum beneath the paper, because it would have engraved my desktop through the paper. Be advised, the manual recommends a sheet of steel be placed on the work surface to protect it. This Class 4 Laser Engraver should only be used with adult supervision and on protected work surfaces. I’m excited about the opportunities to create using this engraver and hope this information has been helpful. ... show more

  • Great first laser
Having used 100W CO2 lasers before, I really didn't expect much out of this 5W diode laser. However, my expectations were blown away by what you can actually accomplish with this laser. The laser comes well packaged and assembly was easy and precise. The included manual left a lot to be desired, but the assembly video on the included MicroSD USB reader helped quite a bit in understanding how everything fits together. As far as using it, I was able to cut through 3mm MDF in one pass, 1/4" poplar wood in 3 passes, and 3mm black acrylic in 3 passes. The acrylic did bubble a bit on the edges due to over heating though. Doing more passes at a faster speed may help with that. Engraving works well on all of those materials. I did find that the design of the laser module makes lens cleaning a must on a regular basis. Even though it has a fan that pulls smoke out through a filter, the lens cover gets fouled and performance is reduced pretty noticeably, especially if you are doing a lot of cutting. Also, unless you get an enclosure for this and vent it to the outside, you will want to use this outdoors or maybe in a garage with the garage door open. Also have a fire extinguisher handy, just in case. While the 5W version is surprisingly capable, if you can spare a little more, having used this one, I'd go with the 10W version instead, especially if you plan on cutting a lot. Overall, I think this is a really nice, well made machine. The Creality brand has been around a while and has brand recognition. I think this is a decent entry for them in the hobbyist laser market. But if this is your first laser, be prepared to go though a long learning curve and a lot of trial-and-error in using it. There is a lot of general laser knowledge you need to have to in order produce consistently good results. This is a good laser to get started with though. ... show more
