I had a lot of fun playing with this intro laser engraver - once I got it working. There are two different software options listed in the manual, one that is free, and one that is not (though there is a free trail). AS the old saying goes, you get what you pay for so don't expect a lot in the way of instructions. For example the driver installation for the "Cutlabx" free software says "install driver" - that's all, 1 step! It did error the first time telling me that everything had to be closed in Windoze which I did and tried again. The second time the drivers installed OK. The software requires a different installation which seemed to go fine. YOu can get a few (not many) free images an when you start the software it reminds you of images you can buy. The software runs pretty much like any other basic CAD software and it lets you draw shapes, enter text in different fonts and sizes, and lets you layer as well as create multiple objects in one layer. You can even select only 1 or multiple objects to engrave, or do the entire layer. The most useful thing for me is to download free images and use them and it seems to recognize several types. I found a line drawing of a heart, then added text in the middle of it. When I engraved it though, only the text "printed" because that is what was selected. When I removed that selection, the entire layer "printed". There is a preview button which draws a box on the material where the image would print. However, the shield is orange like shown and distorts the view making it difficult to see where it would end up. They should have used clear plastic for this. By the way, it took me a while to figure out why the power light kept flashing before I realized the shield must be completely closed. It also would not connect to my PC until I changed the com port setting which defaulted to "com 3" - not sure why - but when I changed it to "com 5" it connected immediately. Interestingly, the next time I turned it one it came up connected to "com 4" which was not even an option the first time. You will no doubt need to do some trial and error hacking since there is no real "step by step" instructions for the novice. But once you get it working, it is fun even if the engraving area is small and the power so low. But as an introduction to this fun technology, this is a good place to start with not a lot of money - but I would opt for the more powerful laser.

I think the one drawback in the advertising was that this was good for kids. I think this is easier to use than the Ender 3 era of 3d printers, but... harder than a Cricut. Granted these are all generally different machine types, but I have no other lasers to compare it to. I had issues with the included drivers. I was able to get some off the website but also need to get software somewhere else. I think the laser is pretty good at getting clean images, but I'm still leery of using it on anything expensive for irreplicable because I got a couple small curves here and there on cutting an angle. This may be a setting or my table, I really don't know? I think it's a great introductory machine, and I'm excited that this tech is available at this low price. I also didn't see any kind of cup accessory available but I haven't checked in awhile and it may be out of stock. It's pretty versatile in the way it cuts a lot of mediums, and you're limited only by your imagination. The size is nice that you can do a host of projects, and it has a pretty sturdy case so it isn't just wobbling and shaking all over the place. Great value for the money.

I've been through a half-dozen laser engravers as I use them in my artwork and I'm always looking for something a little better, and until now, my Genmitsu has been my favorite. And then this Carverall comes along, which is like the bigger, slightly cooler brother of the Genmitsu. This was pretty easy to set up, for the most part. Very easy to connect the laser and focus it. Note that I'm using Lightburn for everything, so all setup issues may relate to that. I was unable to get my system to access the TF card that the machine comes with, so I downloaded drivers from the website. I also used Lightburn to auto-detect and install the machine's drivers... I don't know which method worked because it was a bit of a struggle to connect. I could get the machine to find its home location, but it thought it was engraving when it was not. Rebooting Lightburn did not work, but turning the machine off and on again worked great, and we were good to go! So if you encounter driver problems... give that a try. Next step was camera calibration; again, could not access the files locally and I'm not sure where they are on the Carverall website, so I used Lightburn's internal calibration to set everything up, and that seemed to work just fine. I etched a little guide on some chipboard taped to the removable base plate. This is where I saw that the precision kinda falls apart at the upper left corner, and the laser swings a bit wide, creating a small arc instead of a 90-degree corner. Probably not a big deal, as cutting on the extremities won't be a regular thing anyway, and this isn't an uncommon problem. Other than that, I appreciate the fact that the shield rises straight up, and isn't on a hinge; kinda just saves space as I can now use the top of the machine for light accessory storage. I wish it were a LITTLE darker; the Genmitsu feels like it protects the eyes a little better, but maybe that has to do with this being a slightly more powerful laser. BEST OF ALL, this comes with an onboard camera. I'd previously spent about $80 for a camera unit for the Genmitsu; having it totally integrated here as part of the price is awesome. I'm still dialing in the needs to delicately cut paper with this compared to the Genmitsu, but trial cuts are going great. Really pleased with this!

Piece of CRAP doesn’t work when it said in the description of this product it’s meant for kids that’s BS. This was so difficult to set up very annoying. You can’t just plug and play. I couldn’t even get it running. There is so many things you have to download. not recommended for young kids for people more advanced! Not worth it!
