Great learning toy

I bought this kit as a demonstration for our science unit on renewable/nonrenewable energy. I put it together at school in about twenty minutes, including having to take the unit apart because I put it together wrong. (Totally my fault.) The kit was made of high quality materials. The instructions were adequate. When the kit was put together, it could be demonstrated for the class merely by spinning by hand, or by using a fan. It worked outside during the onset of a rainstorm. I did not set it down as the base (empty soda bottle) is too light to withstand the wind. I would suggest filling the base with sand for stability if you wanted to set it down. Did not work. At all. Very disappointed.

We were really looking forward to this. It did not work at all. The gears would not even touch when put all together but I was able to put a shim in the motor part between the plastic to get the gears to touch but the whole thing is too tight at the propeller and does not move at all. It was very windy today too. However when the pieces were not together and we were building it the propeller was blowing around on the table so I had high hopes. The light does come on briefly if you spin the propeller with your finger but you have to use some force to even spin it. Very disappointing and I would not recommend. Fun and easy build but doesn’t work

This was a super fun project to do with my fan obsessed 6 year old. Unfortunately once we finished it no amount of wind (even from a high powered fan) would make it work. A forceful spin using our hands could, but that was pretty frustrating considering this was a project about wind power.

Nifty little generator
Style: Windmill Generator Kit
I bought this to demonstrate mechanical-to-electrical energy conversion in a classroom setting. It is perfect for this, as the mechanism is clearly visible. We used an electric fan to produce the wind, since it was too cold to go outdoors. This had the advantage that we were able to vary the wind speed and therefore LED intensity. The students (age 11) really "got it" once they saw this. That being said, don't plan on using this for any practical purpose other than learning: it takes a lot of wind to turn on the tiny LED. ... show more
