Good for how cheap it is.

It's not miraculous or anything. But given the low price tag, it's pretty good at what it does. I do feel like it may not be very durable moving forward. I think if you get this kind, you might have to replace it more frequently than if you can maybe find a more expensive but longer-lasting version. But it does what I want. If you've never used these before it's pretty easy. It's kind of like sandpaper of different grades to rub across your nails, making them smooth and shiny. You follow the numbers. 1 on this one is a file for filing rough nail edges. Then you use 2, 3, and 4 on each nail, rubbing each one back and forth across the nail for a few seconds. It leaves you with a soft, shiny-looking nail. I like it because I'm a bit suspicious of the chemicals in nail polish. It won't give you as high gloss of a shine as some nail polishes, but it's this soft, natural, healthy shine. And having smoother nails feels good too.

Ridges GONE and my nails are smooth and shiny!

I decided to give this a try. The older I get, the more ridges I have in my fingernails and it bugs me. When I saw this on Amazon for such a great price, I went for it. The process was so simple by just reading the sides that tell you what to do. Within 15 minutes, my fingernails are not only free of ridges, but smooth and shiny. I highly recommend buying one! It has been fun watching the ridges erase, so I even did it to my son’s fingernails. I’ll definitely buy another in the future

Good for the Price

The 4 step buffing block is what I consider a four star product. It could be a 3 or 5 star depending on your use. To start, the length of the block is about 3.5 inches (~9cm). Sides 1&3 are about 1 inch in height while sides 2&4 are are 1 1/4 inches in height. I couldn't figure out why there's a size difference except maybe a manufacturing reason. It really shouldn't make much of a difference. It made with a foam block with each of the sides glued to it. For occasional home use, this should hold up just fine (watch out cats like these!). With heavy use, I'm a little hesitant if it would hold up. One thing to consider is that this isn't a 6 step buffer. A six step buffer would give you a more gradual transition between each of the steps, perhaps giving you a little bit better of a job. If your nails are in bad shape, you might want to go to a nail salon and get them to a place that you could use this for maintenance. This tool isn't quite robust enough to tackle tough jobs, but it would be great for maintaining nails. Overall, you should be reasonably pleased with this. Sure, it might not be professional grade, but for the price it'll be hard to find something other than this for the same quality level.

Disposable after few uses

Not great. I can’t tell any difference between the first 3 grits, and the last 2 are worthless. Also the grit is weak and basically only worth a couple of uses so it’s disposable. I’m going to try buying a little higher quality for a little more money but it will probably last longer and be worth it.

Literally horrible.. NO NO NO

I’ve used MANY 4-side blocks in my life to take care of my nails, and this one has to be the worst one yet. First of all, the block is super soft and flimsy, it literally bends and indents as you grip it. The layer of material that does the sanding/polish action is beyond paper thin, any area on any side looses abrasiveness and stops working after a few seconds on contact with the nail. The end result, the nail isn’t even shiny! It will be smooth at best. If that’s your look, this is perfect for you. Another CON about this block is that is has literally 4 levels.. the first level is a very very fine grit sandpaper, I have been using it to file my nails down here and there as to get some of my moneys worth out of this garbage, but regardless, it’s tooootttallly NOT OK to use that to smooth “ridges” from your nail bed!! It takes way too much nail off. When I finished with this block, my nail had a barely there, dull luster and it was almost translucent from being buffed so thin. Ladies, I skimped because I wanted to be cheap but just stick with a good brand that worked for you in the past. The last brand I used that worked good on Amazon was from “Avila/Avita”, can’t remember the name exactly, but it was a lot more expensive. It has the traditional 3 levels - 1 side buff, 2 sides to smooth/polish, 1 side to shine. That block makes people think my natural nails are French tips!!! This one doesn’t!!!!

It looks like there might be some reviews from first-time nail buffer users, or people who maybe aren't sure what the best uses for this would be. This product works just like you think it will, if you regularly buff your fingernails/toenails. This is not as "industrial strength" as the block your manicurist will have in the salon, but you don't want that anyway. I estimate that it is in the middle range of home-use buffers for grit strength (think sandpaper if you don't know what I mean here) which should be good for beginners, but I also use it, and I have been doing my own full manicures for 25 years, since I went to cosmetology school. This is a good price when I compare it to the quality and price that I can find in either regular retail stores or professional beauty supply stores. The free shipping is not slow boat to China by any means either. I got mine faster than I was supposed to, just like another reviewer. To the woman who can't get her toenails smooth, you need a professional file first, then to follow these directions. Pro files are usually black, large, and quite inexpensive. This one is .69 on Amazon for example: http://www.amazon.com/Professional-Nail-File-Black-Model/dp/B003M2L19C/ref=sr_1_41?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1369245513&sr=1-41&keywords=nail+file Slowly and CAREFULLY use whichever side of the file doesn't scare you :) to buff the surface of your toenails. You will see that you can remove a serious amount of nail this way because you're using a file, so be careful! Try to use smooth, even strokes. This will save you time later. Then, when your toenail is rough from the file, but evenly rough and NOT ridgy, then use a block file like the one in this listing. Start with the roughest side, the one that masquerades as a nail file (I wouldn't use it to file with though; use a pro file instead). Use quick back and forth strokes all over the nail. The smoother the grit on the buffer (like sides 2-4 on this buffer) the less you need to pay attention or even look what you're doing. Use the file, and then 3 sides of the buffer, then go watch tv and use the 4th, shine side. If by 2 minutes into the show your toenails aren't shiny and gorgeous, call me, I'll be right over. Update: SHIPPING - No longer free shipping (March of '13), but the price actually ends up being 2 cents less. I paid $4 with free shipping in Dec of '12; now it is $2.99 + $.99 = $3.98. CUSTOMER IMAGE - It's harder than I thought to get a good picture of the shine coming off a fingernail, but I did my best. See above :)

Perfect tool for manicures
