  • High-resolution, easy to use, and records video! But zoom is grainy High-resolution, easy to use, and records video! But zoom is grainy
I feel lucky that I got the chance to review these night vision goggles. They are very light but feel well-made. They look like binoculars, but actually the left lens is a camera, and the right lens is an infrared light. The camera maps to the two eyepieces, so it feels binocular and is low-strain on the eyes. You use the adjustment buttons to change the brightness of the IR light, which increases or decreases the illumination of what you see through the goggles. The same buttons are used to zoom in and out by long-pressing. There are several resolutions to choose from: 4k, FHD (1080p), and 360p. All looked very sharp, except when zoomed in all the way, because it's a digital zoom, so the image becomes very grainy at higher magnification. The included 32GB microSD card was a nice touch -- you can literally open the box, insert the card, press the power button, and start taking night vision videos, without buying anything else. You can also take photos by switching to photo mode. The handy rangefinder works well as long as you're aiming at something solid. The mode you'll be using most of the time is the infrared mode, which activates the infrared light and switches everything to black and white. You can make the light VERY bright if you want to -- my backyard was pretty dark but I only needed level 1 out of 7. If you were in total darkness, looking at something far away, you might need the higher levels. Note that these are not merely goggles, they are binoculars -- meaning they magnify what you are seeing. They are not designed for, say, exploring hallways in a dark house, because of the magnification. They are for outdoor use, looking at things 50-200 feet away. Supposedly it can range-find up to 900 feet (3 football fields), but I don't think you'd be able to see much at that distance given the graininess of the digital zoom. To get videos from the device, you can put the card into a card reader, or you can connect the included USB-C cable to your computer, turn the goggles on, and now you will have 3 options. MEMORY allows you to access the memory card from your computer. VIDEO is normal operation mode. PC CAMERA allows you to see through the goggles on your computer as if it were a webcam, although you can't use any of the night vision functions. Might be useful for something? Annoying things: Recording in "4k" is actually only 2048x1152 (2k), which is like 5% bigger than 1080p/FHD. This seems like false advertising to me. You can't zoom while recording. The frame rate suffers when recording in "4k" (see my video). Apparently the little processor has trouble keeping up. There are two "color effect" modes that don't actually do anything useful. There's a "night vision green" one where it removes all the colors except green, and there's another mode that removes the green channel so you're left with everything looking purple. These modes don't allow you to see any better in darkness than normal full color non-infrared mode; they are apparently just for funsies, which is strange to me. It's like having a car with an extra button that makes the windows roll up and down over and over. Yeah you can do it, but why? The manual was written by non-English speakers, so it is a little hard to understand, and sometimes says things like "use the Up button to change the setting, then use the WL/IR button to change it back"... they're talking about the Down button. There is no WL/IR button on the list of buttons. They occasionally say "gears" instead of "levels", as in "the IR brightness has 7 gears". It's not terrible but it took me some time to figure stuff out. Summary: Not being a night vision aficionado, I can't say whether these features are worth this price point. The zoom is pretty grainy, and the 4k is only 2k, but if you're not trying to look at stuff really far away, the infrared enhancement is pretty solid. I took a video of my backyard, which is attached to this review. Also attached is a photo of how the backyard looks without night vision (pretty dark). I took a second video zoomed in, but Amazon will only let me attach one video. ... show more
