  • Great Product
Color: Silver
I was skeptical that this would be study enough to hold my laptop and be light enough to move around; well I was pleasantly surprised. I am disabled and spend a lot of time in a recliner so this had to be light enough when holding the laptop to move out of the way with one hand so I can get out of the chair. Then be able to move it back into a usable position when back in the chair. The pros: 1. Assembly was a piece of cake. All the parts were there and they all went together as designed. 2. The laptop holder is strong and the clamps hold it securely so you do not have to worry about it falling off when using it or moving the stand. 3. The height adjustment is more than adequate. 4. I am a large and comfortable guy (read BIG) and I was worried that the arm would not be long enough to bring the laptop in front of me. It is long enough and does a great job with the two articulating joints. 5. As advertised the feet easily go under my chair even on a carpet. Cons: 1. The knob that you turn to tighten the height adjustment is too small. You cannot get a good enough grip on it to really tighten it so and times everything will slide down. Easy fix would be to change to a 3" knob or lever. 2. No place for a mouse; I know I am old school but I like a mouse verses the touch pad. That's it: I have had it for a few weeks and really love it. I highly recommend this product and would buy it again. I have no affiliation with this product or the manufacturer. ... show more

  • Does the job as effectively as I'd hoped
Color: Silver
It took about 30 mins to put together. Not a trivial task, but there was a Youtube video mentioned in the instructions that was helpful (not very professionally made, but adequate). It grips my laptop well enough for me to be comfortable with it not falling out, even at some pretty extreme angles. I don't recommend typing directly on the laptop while it's on it (use an wireless keyboard in your lap or whatever), as it will jiggle around a bit. You can if you must, but I'd find it distracting beyond a few sentences here and there. One slight disappointment is the main arm - the height adjustment is awkward involving a thumb screw and there's no rotation of that arm around the base - only at the 2 arm joints (like the elbow and the wrist). I paired it with a zero-gravity chair and have a super ergonomic workstation for long hours of coding/learning/whatever after I'm tired of sitting at the desk or standing. Variety is key. All in all I give it 5 stars because I don't think there's any other product that would meet my needs this well. ... show more

  • What I was looking for
Color: Black
I work in IT and sit and stand in front of my workstation all day. After work, I just want to veg with my MacBook Air on my recliner couch. I was getting neck and shoulder strain from constantly looking down at my laptop while balancing it on the armrest or on my lap, so I looked for a way to be ergonomically lazy (as ergonomical as a plush reclining couch can ever allow). I needed something that didn't take up too much space and was easy to get out of the way. I also needed something that was going to be sturdy and hold my laptop about 70 degrees from horizontal without fearing it was going to fall on me while I reclined. The MagicHold was one of the few products I could find online that checked all those boxes, so I placed an order for it. Assembly instructions were poor, but it wasn't too hard to figure out how to screw three rods together. After assembly, I positioned it over my couch and clamped in my MacBook. The stand overall seemed able to support the weight, so I angled the laptop about 70 degrees to see if it would fall out of the base, and the laptop didn't fall. So far, so good. When I tried sitting down on the couch and reclining, I was able to pivot the laptop to exactly where I wanted it. Success! However, after a day or so, I realized that while perfect for watching Netflix, reaching up to the keyboard to type and move the mouse for anything more than a few clicks wasn't ergonomic, and frankly tiring. So, to supplement the stand, I bought Apple's magic keyboard and trackpad along with a simple tray to put them on. Those I have on my lap while I watch the screen being held by the MagicHold. In fact, I'm typing this review reclined on the couch and haven't needed to physically touch my laptop at all this morning. The shoulder and neck strain went away using this setup, but now my lower back aches from being on a reclining couch for so long, but I can't fault MagicHold for that. While MagicHold works for me and my use case, I did want to point out a few things called out in other reviews: 1. This product is stable for typing on, but there is noticeable reverberation. If you type lightly or only intend to type a little bit while using MagicHold, I don't think it is a problem. Before I switched to using a wireless keyboard and trackpad, I did realize I couldn't be as heavy handed when using my MacBook's builtin keyboard or trackpad because of the reverberation. 2. I was a little concerned when I saw a few reviews complaining about not being able to pivot the laptop out of their way when getting up. Leaving the comfort of a couch is already sadness...who wants to make it a struggle? I myself struggled at first because my first inclination to get the laptop out of my way was to move the whole arm, but the arm doesn't pivot around the main rod / stand. Then I realized that I wasn't using the pivot in the middle of the arm. I found I could easily swing the laptop completely out of my way by turning this pivot. Problem solved. Some things I wish MagicHold would improve: 1. Switching between the different clamps for your digital devices requires an allen wrench and some critical thinking skills. I wish it were intuitive and could be done without needing to grab a tool. 2. The grips that make contact with your laptop to hold it in place can easily slide out (and get lost) if you aren't careful when removing your laptop from the stand. Overall, this stand does the job and now I'm much more comfortable lounging around with my laptop. ... show more

  • V2 of the best way to hold portable devices.
Color: Black
Any of these magichold products are the best way to hold 1 or more portable devices simultaneously. Believe it or not, they reliably do so for years. I've had V1 of theirs get knocked over about 3 times and somehow protected every device as the rig landed on tile floors. Dramatic noise and process settling to the ground but nothing including the stand took damage. Clips sprung off amd devices let go after it hit the ground, but came out good. Jaunty, wonky fall each time, with all the appendages softening the fall or something--no cracked screens and sometimes they were even open-- these, even V1, do have a gripping . I suspect a critical recipe in my formula is I spray (Amsoil) silicone lubricant on any plastic/rubber that's not meant to be grippy. (so all but the ones on the actual device clamp) . On the V1 I had to wrap a tool-grip rubber over theirs since it was letting a 14" laptop slide in vertical position. This new one's tablet-holding mounts are alot better than even the tool grip, so they saw this problem and resolved it. ... show more

  • It takes some work but is useful
Color: Black
The Magichold is a usable product and has decent stability for heavier laptops. When I first put it together the laptop holder was at an angle. It took a lot of trial and error with the Allen wrench to get it almost straight. The hinges for the arm and holder are a little precarious and even when you think they are tight enough the laptop can still fall in your face. It really took some time to muscle the screws in the hinges enough to get things stable. Moving the arm up and down the pole is also a pain. It doesn't move easily and be sure you don't have anything in the holder when you try to do this. The weight of the legs is great and the most quality part of this product. The overall quality of the product is decent but it's overpriced for what you get. At most this product should sell for $50-$60. Improvements could be made on ease of adjusting and overall mobility and stability of the arms and hinges. I also challenge the idea that there is 360-degree movement. That may be possible, but not with ease. Still, it will serve the purpose of holding the laptop so I can look up or directly at the screen as opposed to looking down while on Zoom calls. My neck and back should be pleased. ... show more

  • Why Did I Wait So Long
Color: Black
I wasted years of my life precariously balancing my laptop on a bunch of pillows halfway on my chest to use my laptop or watch media while lying down. For context, I have many health problems, especially chronic pain, and I am essentially disabled most of the time. When I'm in a lot of pain, I can't really do anything else except lie in bed and try to consciously rest and relax find the perfect position so that I don't aggravate my nerve/muscle pain and organ pain. This thing is so much nicer than any other stupid solution I've seen, and it does exactly what it says it does perfectly. The only people who complain about this thing are either people who don't know how to use it properly or they are just so ginormously fat that they complain about how they have to 'get right up next to it' because the support arm "isn't long enough." As long as you aren't like 400lbs, it is absolutely long enough, in fact it's probably the perfect length because if the support arm was any longer it would be too much in the way and also the laptop would shake more if you made any movements. If you are using something like this just to hold your phone, then yeh maybe the arm is too short, but why tf are you using something heavy duty like this just to hold ur d@mn phone? Tldr; this is probably completely unnecessary for a phone, but this is pure money for a laptop holder. It has completely changed my life lol ... show more

  • Plastic parts break easy
Color: Black
I really love this when I got it. I bought I January, all it does is sit by my bed with my laptop. I went to swing the arm over to me and my whole laptop moved weird on the arm. I took my laptop off with the installed clip. And where the clip is it is a plastic part the had cracked into a bunch of pieces and fell apart in my hands. I can't return it been too long. But why did it break. Substandard materials. Don't buy this. ... show more

  • Great functionality and value overall
Color: Black
I've used this thing nearly daily for six months and just now thought to myself again how great it is. Decided it was time to write a review. You can see from the photos that it can handle a full-size MBP to allow for comfortable use from a couch. Just a tad wobbly because of the weight, nbd. The height adjustment is a snap. You can also see that it works great with a solid-size Chromebook (not a tablet, a whole Chromebook). The Chromebook is heavy enough that you can see I've added some extra clips to make sure it stays in place at any angle, but I'm sure a lighter tablet wouldn't need anything extra to feel secure. This stand is also light - I took these two photos right after each other, and moving it around the house is absolutely no problem at all. The only real drawbacks here are that the swivel range is limited (but provides the benefit that it stays in place quite well when used as a touch screen) and that it does best when something secures the legs. It's not magic and can overbalance easily with a heavy device. The instructions note that you can place legs under the mattress and that works great. It wasn't too difficult to assemble, although a doofus like me found the video instructions a bit confusing. All in all I really can't imagine not having this thing and I am quite tempted to buy another one or two. ... show more
