  • Great start for a field power system
Style: 40W
This three-part solar panel by GrnOas.E is a great start for a field power system. I rate this as a five-star product because of its packability, low cost and power output. For it to be useful, you must build a kit around it. Please look at the first picture. It weighs just over 2.5 pounds. This solar panel could be placed into the main storage pocket of most packs. With two or more people on a camping trip, then the various parts of this system could be distributed between the members and thus share its weight. When it is collapsed into its storage mode, its dimensions are 14.625 inches long by 9.25 inches wide by 0.5 inches deep, with the exception of its power port. In bright sunlight, it had a VOC (voltage open circuit) of 23.1 Volts DC. The panel is IP67 rated, but I would be careful with the three output ports on the power plug. Please look at the second and third pictures. When you are using this panel, I suggest that you put plugs into the output ports that you are not using so that they are not filled up with fine dust or water. The panel comes with a three-foot-long DC 5525 power cord and two small carabiners. At three feet long, this cable is almost worthless, but do not throw it away. There are some low-cost battery packs that can only be recharged by this type of connection. If you have one of these battery packs, then you need to obtain a thirty-foot DC 5525 power extension cord. (Amazon does sell this cord.) You could create a field power system with this 40-watt solar panel if you add a number of additional pieces. According to the manual that comes with this panel, it can function from (minus) - 40 degrees Fahrenheit to 121 degrees Fahrenheit. As always, the problem with cold weather operation is that battery packs have degraded to zero functionality as the temperatures drop below freezing (32 degrees F) while the solar panels can often work at temperatures well below zero degrees F. You have to find a way to keep the battery pack relatively warm, so that it can be charged by the panel. Charge the battery pack during the day and then charge your devices at night. You need long power extension cables between the battery pack and the panel. My recommendation would be to obtain a thirty-foot USB C to USB C power extension cable (sold by Amazon), a battery pack that is charged by USB C input (which is almost standard now) and a variety of small bungee cords and carabiners. You could use a number of different USB style power extension cables, but the point is to be able to put your battery pack in a protected spot, while the solar panel is positioned in a spot so that it is aimed at the sun and producing maximum power for you. The bungee cords and carabiners are for tying off the panel to any available support while aiming it at the sun. ... show more

  • Great for camping
Style: 20W
I'm pretty happy with my little birthday present to myself: this GrnOas.E 20W Portable Solar Charger. I'm an avid camper, and we usually don't have access to electricity so we have pretty minimal power needs, mainly just phones and headlamps. Until recently, handheld battery banks were an adequate solution, but then I was lucky enough to get a 10W solar panel and I'm intrigued by the possibilities of not needing to pack 100% of my anticipated power needs. This 20W panel is part of that plan. The panel is about the size of a laptop when folded, and a little thinner than one but the power connection does jut out about 1/2" on the outside, which makes me a little nervous about it getting jostled or banged up when packed in my gear. It has a USB and a type C port for connecting to equipment. The outside of the panel is covered in an attractive gray fabric material that seems durable. Each corner has a grommet, and the panel comes with two small carabiners for attaching it to another object, like a tent or a backpack. The only thing that I really didn't like, aside from the unprotected, protruding power connection port, is that there is no way to keep the panel closed, like a velcro strap or a snap or something. This means that, although it folds nicely, nothing keeps it in that folded position other than gravity, much like a book. I feel like this is an oversight in the design of this. So how does it work? I am not terribly versed in the math required for solar panels, so instead I conducted my own, very unscientific test by plugging it in and setting it in the sun. To be specific, I connected the panel to a 30K mAh battery pack, and set it horizontally in the sun at around 2:30 pm one day after the winter solstice. Accounting for the obvious flaws in this, like that the sun was already low and weak, and that the panel was not optimally oriented toward the sun, my battery pack picked up about 5% power in the first hour and 3% in the next, later hour. While that doesn't sound like a like, it's enough for me. It takes about 20% of this pack to recharge my phone from low, so, with any decent sun and correct angling, I should be able to charge my phone daily and then top off the battery pack over the course of a day. That's really all I need, and I still have the rest of the battery pack's full charge as back-up if I get a day of rain or heavy clouds. You aren't going to run a fridge, a hot shower, or even play tunes all day with this little solar charger. However, if you have just small power needs and are creative, this might well be sufficient to keep your gear charged for lots less. This panel is small, can be stashed almost anywhere, and hits at the pretty low end of the expected price per watt of power, so I think it's a reasonable addition to any camping setup. I only wish it latched closed to keep it better protected for long-term use. ... show more
