This thing cuts branches and small logs into kindling. A small log doesn't burn for long, but split into a a bunch of thin kindling it helps get the fire started. To use this, you need to mount it where you can get a lot of leverage. We mounted ours on a corner of the barn near the wood pile. Originally it was too high off the ground, so we lowered it to where the handle starts a little below shoulder height. That way you can lean down hard on the blade. Be sure to use the handle extender!

The description clearly states that this splitter is for making kindling. This is not meant for splitting small trunks or limbs. This is very well made and it is great is include the handle extension for those times you do need some extra leverage on a piece of wood. The design has a nice rustic aesthetic. It would even look fine mounting near an indoor fireplace.
