We like to have an alternative set of knives for an older set of German-made ones that had been workhorses in the kitchen. In the product's photos and promotional video, this set - 12 knives, scissors, sharpener, and wood block - looks beautiful and seems well-crafted. However, we don't want to shell out a fortune on another pricey set, so we decided to give this hitherto unheard-of brand -KNIFESAGA- block set of knives a try. The set arrived promptly, and we're confused if the blades' materials are from Japan but manufacturing is in China. But the box states that it's made in China. Unlike the German-made set, there are no identifying marks on the blades where they come from except for the brand and logo. We unwrapped each knife, scissors, and sharpening tool, inspecting their quality while placing each piece properly on the elegant wooden block. And what a surprise! These are truly well-crafted, quality-made knives - from the 8" chef's knife down to the 4.5" steak knives. The blades' handles, rivets, and finish are no different from the more expensive, albeit older, German-made ones. We compared and tested the 8" chef's knife (the most utilized one) alongside the 8" German-made one, and they're almost identical in weight, feel, and balance - see photo. Although it didn't come with a shorter (6") chef's knife, its absence was replaced by the 7" Santoku knife. We also love the small footprint of the rich-brown colored wooden block -it perfectly complements the set. We're so glad that we took the chance on an unknown brand that didn't cost an arm and a leg and came out with something that we know will last as long as the more expensive German brand. ... show more

This knife block and knife set has everything that you need. I wish it were angled more forward, it's almost upright which makes it difficult for me to reach over to get what I want. If I were taller or my counters were shorter it would be less of an issue, and still isn't a deal breaker just personal preference. My only actual complaint is that the steak knives are serrated. I prefer a sharp smooth blade not serrated blades on my steak knives. I also wish that the scissors came apart for better cleaning since they are used in the kitchen. ... show more

The block itself is gorgeous. The knives are sharp. I haven’t tried all of them yet, but so far each one has been as sharp as the last. I have to echo some reviewers who said the block was not slanted enough to get the longer knives out when this is stored under a standard cabinet. That is true. I need to move it forward to get those back knives out. So as long as you are armed with the information, you can decide if it will be a problem for you. I would not hesitate to give this as a gift as well. It was well packaged, the block in bubble wrap, each knife in a separate sleeve. The block is heavy, but the knives are light and easy to handle. This appears to be a good quality knife and you can't go wrong with Japanese knives. These knives are nice for the advanced cook or even the beginner cook because they are sharp and they will definitely be able to cut through many things. It is a nice set to sit on the countertop because the butcher block that it comes with is gorgeous. the handful is good and they're not too heavy but they're also not too late to feel cheap or anything like that. If you are a chef like I am, then you will definitely appreciate this knife that may be more so than the average person. ... show more

Overall this seems like a pretty decent set of knives. They're definitely sharp, but the blade is very thin and I'm not sure how long they'll keep their sharp edge. I'm just concerned that I will have to sharpen these more often. The knives are lightweight, but still weighted well. They fit in my hand nicely so I get a good grip for cutting. The wooden knife block looks nice and has a nice stain. The block also has a more sleek design than my older knife block; however, now the knife block is not angled enough. This makes the back 3 knives in the block difficult to pull out if you have the block under a cabinet. Most people are going to want to store the knife set on a countertop that is more than likely going to have wall cabinets above it. We have standard height counter/wall cabinet height ratio and the block has to be either pulled out or tipped in order to pull out the taller knives towards the back of the block. If you don't pull out the block or tip it then the knives won't clear the underside of the cabinets. This isn't a deal breaker, but it is an annoyance. I like the knives for the most part, but I wish the small pairing knife had a slight curve to the blade near the handle like most other pairing knives tend to have. This pairing knife is just a simple straight edge. The steak lives has a nice sharp serrated edge. The bread knife is a good length with a different serrated edge.
