  • Easy to build with a 13mm ratchet wrench
With a 13mm ratchet wrench AND a deep socket 13mm bit and a drill this was a breeze to build. I tried to show the build process with the actual product and not the blurry drawing of the instructions. NOTE: in the photo of all the parts I forgot to put the washers next to the plastic wingnuts - so don’t forget to add those. I also made a build video for this product, so check that out if you are more of a “in person” video person. I ADDED some 1/8th rubber to go between that steel rectangle that mounts with the bolts and the top of my cargo roof rails to protect the metal to metal contact. (See that video for more on that) OVERALL, I am pleased with the apparent quality of the kayak racks. And since they are able to be dismantled that would make it easy to replace the EVA foam if those ever weathered. That last photo was an attempt to show the gauge of the items compared to a standard Craftsman wrench. ... show more

  • Worth it
Yes, it does take some time to get these set up, but if you like to build IKEA furniture (I do at least) then this will be no problem. Took about an hour for set up. Once I got them on our Jeep Patriot, they worked like a dream. So happy to confidently cart my kayaks around to local spots! The hassle of putting them together is definitely worth the price to me. ... show more

  • Good racks, difficult installation
My wife and I recently came into possession of some kayaks that a family member was getting rid of. I had wanted some kayak racks that were fairly cheap but sturdy and were able to be mounted on a cross bar on my wife's SUV. These came in pieces in the box and were fairly easy to install and put together. However when it came to installing these on the cross bar, it was very annoying to put together. The hand nuts were very obnoxious to tighten down while holding the kayak racks in place. Initially, I had to tighten them all a little bit and then slide the rack into place. My hands became very tired quickly after just installing the first one... It took me roughly an hour to install all 4 of the kayak racks on the crossbar. I think later on I will replace the handnuts with something more substantial and easier to remove with a tool. All in all the whole thing was held together and served its purpose when we went to retrieve the kayaks. The straps that come with it are worthless though, won't tighten for anything, so get yourself some self ratcheting straps. ... show more

  • Great product!
This is a really sturdy and well-designed system. However, if you don’t have a full 2.5” clearance between the rail and the roof of your car it will not fit. I only have 1.5” clearance so I returned it.

  • Excellent product and even more excellent customer service
The product was exactly as advertised. I lost a couple parts over the winter and they promptly sent me new replacement pieces two different times! Very responsive customer service! I would highly recommend.

  • Very difficult to assemble, but sturdy when assembled
I just finished assembling the two kayak carriers (with two holders for each kayak). This SHOULD have been an easy assembly job, but it was not. A 15-30 minute job took almost 2 hours in my fully equipped shop. The problem is the really poor fit of the molded plastic saddles that fit between the upper and lower tube pieces. The holes are in slight misalignment (1/16" to 1/8") with the holes in the steel tubes. For the first three holders, I used a mallet to hammer the carriage bolts through the assembly, shaving off the plastic in the smaller hole. For about half of these, the tight plastic kept the square shank of the carriage bolt from mating with the square hole in the tube, which allowed the bolt to spin when installing the nut. I had to align these carefully and then hammer the head of the carriage bolt to get it to mate. For the last holder, I bored out the plastic holes with a power drill before assembly which made it a little easier to assemble. It is funny that the kit comes with a tiny, stamped 13mm wrench to tighten the nylon lock nuts. I think this would be quite impossible. After they are fully assembled, the holders seem very sturdy. I have not yet mounted them on my rack or carried a kayak in them, but my impression is that they would do a good job (hence the 3 stars rather than fewer). I do recommend using the nylock nuts for mounting on the vehicle, rather than the plastic knobs that are also provided. I think the plastic knobs could easily vibrate off. If you choose to use the plastic knobs (for easier attachment and removal), I recommend using a lock washer (not provided). They do provide extra nylock nuts. ... show more

  • Easy assembly and they work!
My 21 year old daughter put these together. They are easy. Other reviews mention a ratchet set, and yes, that is helpful- my son used one on the last one and the whole job would have been way quicker. Easy to install on the top of my car. The straps have worked, but I haven’t taken them long distance yet. I’d feel better about them if they were thicker and more heavy duty but that’s just me, they’ve worked fine so far— the 3 times we’ve traveled with this set up and our kayaks. UPDATE: Took our kayaks long distance and the straps did fail. We had to buy a new set at a hardware store, so I’d take a couple stars off for that. Otherwise, still a decent purchase. ... show more
