If you want to change the backlight time, you can press and hold "UP" and "DOWN" button at the same time to enter backlight time setting, then press "UP" and "DOWN" to select the backlight time (bL-0 =10 minutes, bL-1=1 hour, bL-2=4 hours, bL-3=8 hours, bL-4=always on), finally press the "COST" to save the backlight time settings.
  • Overload protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the LCD will display OVERLOAD to warn the user. All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting.
  • Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure.

I got this for planning a solar system for my home, and wish I had it years ago. It was surprising how little some of the things in my home cost to run. My utility charges 23 cents per kilowatt hr during peak use, which I programmed into this device. I found out running my washing machine full and on the longest cleaning cycle only cost 5 cents – way less than I would have guessed. In contrast, an LED grow light I use to grow sprouts uses power when it isn’t even on (??!!) and way more than I imagined when it is. It uses the same amount of power in 7 hours that the washing machine uses in one cycle (45 minutes). I would have thought (about 40) LED’s would use WAY less power than a motor. The only information I wish this meter would give that it doesn’t is how many times the device you were checking was actually running. For example, when I checked my refrigerator or furnace for 3 days each, it indicated 72 hours of use, but I’m sure most of that time was idle. My refrigerator uses a lot more power than the sticker indicated, so maybe the gaskets are worn out and leaking, or it is getting low on refrigerant? I checked a few things twice about a week apart and the results were pretty consistent, so that gives me confidence that if not accurate, it is consistent and useful for comparing different items. This meter gives the instant watts, amps and voltage, the total time it was taking measurements, the cumulative kWhrs, and the minimum and maximum watts it detected. I found it useful for checking if the devices in my home were using expected power, what things cost the most to run so I can try to run them during off peak cost times, and in planning a solar power system. I needed to know how many watts my appliances are drawing so I could get an appropriately sized generator (inverter). This meter is great because it tells you how many watts the device is using in real time. It also records the highest watts used for the entire time your appliance is plugged in. That's great for determining the peak wattage of the generator you need to get. Appliances like refrigerators and freezers spike when the compressor kicks in. The meter is easy to read and has useful information. It comes with a couple of plastic "pegs" that you use to reset the meter when you are going to measure a new device. My only complaint is that there is no place to store the pegs on the device and I can see myself losing them. I'm sure I could use a paper clip or a toothpick but I would have really liked a dedicated reset button instead of a hole or at least some place to store the peg on the meter. This meter is actually worth it! I can now see how much power any device (computer, heater, AC, phones, etc.) is consuming through the meter, and whether it is energy-saving as claimed or not. I can also use it to check whether I am getting enough wattage. Awesome! I highly recommend this product.

Display can be set to stay lit the numbers are big enough to see standing 3 feet away. It shows a weekly consumption cost. Multiply by 4 to get monthly cost. Can’t change power rating currently set at .44, to match electric company or you don’t I’m not sure. I have a different brand EZ 40 I can’t change either but power rating is set at .98 Not sure if this effects or has anything to do with cost. It’s a set number in a consumption meter leads me to think it does have something to do with cost. Found my EZ 40 is more user friendly except for display. ... show more

If you are curious about how much energy an electric appliance uses, this will answer that question. Maybe you are deciding on a solar build and want to know how much power will be needed for what you plan to power over a given time to properly design battery storage and panels needed, great tool to assist in that too. For the price, I find this item does everything and more than I personally need. I have a popup tent trailer that I power with solar, a 12v battery, and a "solar generator" with a finite amount of battery storage that can be replenished using solar. I want to know how long my power will last without sun and how long it will take to replinish with sun and this tool was exactly what I needed...YMMV. ... show more

I felt the instructions left a bit to be desired, but nevertheless, this was a great purchase. They explain the definition of each function, but don't tell the average user what this means to them. Whether you chose to program the price of electricity, or use a simple formula, (Google Ohms Law) you can easily find out what it costs per hour, day or month to own a plugged in appliance. Many things in your home use power, even when turned off. TVs, stereos, computers etc are all "Power Vampires". Coupled with a Wi-Fi plug and Alexa, I'm able to turn things around the house off at night, or other periods of non-use. I'll break even with the price of the Wi-Fi plugs in month one, and be saving money not paying the CEO a bonus at the power company! ... show more

Only reason for 4-stars is, I wish they had a slot/clip to hold the little plastic "reset" pins they ship with this. Works great for mapping wattage for sizing a generator. Interesting how many devices I have in the kitchen than pulls between 1000 and 1800 watts during use. Just keep in mind that this unit has a max load of 3800 ish watts before being overloaded (not likely to happen with most devices).
