  • Good beginner tools.
Size: Small
I give these five stars because they’re cheap enough and offer a good way to get into wood turning without spending a lot of money. These are more suited to a mini-lathe rather than a full-size one, however they’d be equally useful on a larger lathe. I’ve used these with a small home-built lathe powered by an old copy machine motor. They work fine, just as anticipated. If you use these in an “intuitive” way, you’ll end up making rough “scraper” cuts all the time, which is safe and workable with a lot of sandpaper afterwards. A better way to use these is to learn how to make them “cut”, rather than scrape, so you get a nice finish and don’t need to sand a lot. To learn how to do that, I recommend a British YouTube channel called “Glenn and Liza Woodturning, Crafts and Carbide” that shows how to use carbide turning tools. They sell their own brand, but don’t push it. They demonstrate the cutting techniques in detail with good description and videography, particularly the close-ups. The guy’s wife is his videographer and together they make a good presentation of how to use carbide turning tools like these. Some of the cutting techniques demonstrated there require taking the tool to the grinder to make small changes in the shape of the carbide tip holder (the bevel) but that isn’t necessary unless you have a grinder and you want optimal performance. These cost only $40, cheap enough to experiment with without much monetary risk if you damage them or lose interest in turning altogether. The box these come in is wood, cheaply made but adequate to the task, however not a presentation box. You can improve any deficiency in the box with common woodworking skills. I softened all the edges on mine, straightened a bow in the lid and polyurethaned the outside of the box to make it more hand-friendly. Good price, decent quality, recommended. ... show more

  • Surprising.high quality
Size: Medium
When I purchased these it only had 2 - 5 star vine reviews, which I was a little suspicious about. Upon inspection, it had a usable (not furniture quality, obviously) wooden box to hold the tools. The shafts were securely mounted inside solid wooden handles with rubber grips at the end. Included in the box were wrenches and spare screws. Before, I had used 20" long shared shop tools for bowls and such with much shorter ones for pens so I was slightly concerned about the 18.3" length of these. I have since used them to turn 4 pens, a 6 by 11" bud vase and a 2 by 6" bowl. In all cases, the length was fine. The.handles are very sturdy and absorbed the vibration when roughing quite well. I should also note I did not rotate the cutters after this as they are still sharp. One thing that sold me about these tools is that each one has their own handle, something many cheaper sets do not. Although I am basically a.beginning turner, I have used some of the better tools like Easy Wood. I like these tools a lot and would buy them again but I recognize they are good but not the equal of the best tools, so I give them a solid 4 star rating. For the price, a beginning or intermediate turner cannot go wrong with these. ... show more

  • Great for Beginner - sharp tools
Size: Small
I've only been using the lathe and turning for about a year. The first set of tools I purchased where longer and bulky. I like these tools because they are shorter and easier to use. I use these on alumilite resin blanks to make Diamond Art Pens. They are sharp, work great, and exactly what I need. I would recommend this product. ... show more
