The AnBaiMei fireplace grate comes neatly packed in a corrugated box. Installation instructions are included but are not really necessary. Some wiggling is required to get the last log support in place. Two small wrenches are included to tighten two threaded rods. The grate components are anchored in place once the rods are installed. The seller's description is a little confusing as to whether the grate is wrought iron or steel. It makes a difference as wrought iron will withstand a higher temperature than steel. It appears to me that this grate is fabricated from 8-gauge (or the metric equivalent) steel. It is painted or powder coated with a high temperature coating. The grate nicely fits a tapered 30" firebox. After several fires both the grate and the paint are holding up well. One issue I have is with the height of the grate. It sits 3" above the hearth, too high for building up a bed of coals. Other grates I have had are 2" high. Also, the small diameter rods, maybe 3/8", might not hold up to high heat. In any case it is a solid grate and well-priced.

The center horizontal bar of my original rack melted after a little over a season of use. It was made from 1/2" square steel rod. Obviously, it was cheap junk. This rack is made from flat bar stock. The measurements are SAE, but it is made from metric sized steel. The width of the bars is 4mm. It is possible that the plate is 5/32", but as a fabricator, that is not a very standard size metal. It went together fairly easily. I struggled a little at first getting all of the slots to line up, but then I flipped it upside down and everything went together easier. The rack bends real easy when tightening the nuts on the rods, so I just made them snug. As far as use, it advertises that it keeps the logs 4.3" off of the firebox bottom to get airflow. That is a bit high for my cruddy fireplace. It keeps the logs too far away from the cinders to keep the fire going. I have to either keep the ashes in the fireplace to lift up the cinders or I am going to add pieces of brick veneer under the rack to make the gap smaller. I believe this is just an issue with my fireplace and a normal one would not have as much of an issue.

This was a bit difficult to assemble. Once put together, it works well. Feels very sturdy and doesn't wobble. Easily stacks wood and holds it well.

I'm giving this 5 stars however the rating is probably more like 4.5 stars. The metal is definitly heavier duty and in the couple fires we've had I've noticed no issues with it deforming, it just isn't quite as sturdy feeling as a cast iron grate. I don't necessarily think it's a bad thing but it would be surprising if this lasts as long as cast iron but for the price and ease of assembly it works great. Overall we're happy with it and will report back if we have any issues through the winter season.
