This is a quality carving set with very sharp tool ends. They have a good solid feel and there are many tool options to carve a quality piece. The price is great for a starter set. The leatherette holder is perfect to safely hold the tools and the protective gloves.

    • Great Beginner Set
My parents lived in Pakistan for a few years before moving to the U.S. Over there, at least at the time, there was a huge market for hand-carved ornate furniture. We still have some of these beautiful pieces in our family today. I haven't seen anything like it for sale here in the states and I doubt I ever will, due to the amount of time it must take an artisan to carve all of the minute details. Now, as a hobbyist woodworker, I've always been tempted to try my hand at carving. I'm more of a power tools user than a hand tools guy, but there is something special about hand carved details in furniture. I've started using power carvers with my angle grinder for some large-scale tasks, but I want to learn detail work and this is the perfect set to get me started. I like how this set comes with so many tools. I don't think any of them are of particularly high quality, but they are perfectly fine for a beginner like me. When it comes to tools, I like to start with an affordable beginner set, then replace them with higher end tools as I figure out which ones I use the most. YouTube videos are going to be your friend as you figure out how to use these tools and hone your skills. As for the tools, they are razor sharp out of the box and are, for the most part, ready to use. I like how there's a strop and sharpening compound included, though some of these shapes are going to be tough to strop without gouging the leather. The case is nice, but doesn't offer much protection for the blades inside. I'm still trying to figure out a more blade-friendly storage option for these. I've only started practicing on some random pine scraps for now. I'll pick up some basswood the next time I make my way down to the hardwood dealer, which I've heard is the ideal species for carving due to its consistent, clean, soft grain. ... show more
