  • I'm glad I bought this reel
Size: 8.1:1 Gear Ratio Style: Left Hand Retrieve
Caught my personal best catfish (10lb) while fishing for bass the other day and this reel handled it no problem. Casts great. Looks great. No issues whatsoever ever. Would reccomend

  • Fits in hand nicely
Size: 8.1:1 Gear Ratio Style: Right Hand Retrieve
Bought the 8.1.1 RH model and it feels great on the rod in hand. Used it in my favorite bass pond with weightless Texas senco and felt that the brakes almost needed to be max’d out to prevent a birds nest with 20# braid. All in all I love this reel so far and on sale was a great bargain on top of that. Update: 11/17/23 After one use fishing (no fish caught), I noticed a crack in the frame that surrounds the spool. Not a clue how that could have cracked but it was right next to the spool so it might catch the line and cause more issues. Returned. ... show more

  • Poor quality
Size: 8.1:1 Gear Ratio Style: Right Hand Retrieve
This was my first time getting a nicer reel. All was well for about 3 trips. The plastic guide that fits in the attachment that spools line onto reel came off With out the plastic part i am worried that the line will be nicked. Not happy

  • Great reel for all around fishing
Size: 6.6:1 Gear Ratio Style: Right Hand Retrieve
I got this because my Daiwa bait caster broke. I love the gear ratio at 6.1 as I tend to change bait fast and have bad habit of using baits I should not with the reel I am using. (Because my other rods/reels are rigged up with other baits I plan to use) So this is going to be much more forgiving . I'll be 'ok' deep or shallow, slow or fast, light or heavy bait. I also got this because I recently got a spinning reel from 13 fish and was very happy at the increased casting distance I was getting versus my old spinning reel ! So yes this bait caster had even better distance than my Daiwa but in all fairness that thing was 15 years old. But I must say I was impressed and got froggy to gettin fishing ! Its real smooth and feels good in the hand. I love how small it is as my old ones are heavy and bulky. The drag and magnetics works perfect ! With the light weight it feels good on the rod. The reel comes with part numbers for all 91 of them in this reel in case you break any. I noticed when a reel does not come with the replacement parts info,, that they are junk. So yes I have nothing but good things to say about this reel and as long as it doesn't tear up, then I will be looking to upgrade my other reels with some more of these 13 fishing reels. Hopefully I can catch 13 or more fish ! I hope you may have found this helpful ! ... show more

  • Very happy with it!
Size: 6.6:1 Gear Ratio Style: Right Hand Retrieve
Very smooth when reeling! 13 Fishing seems to be a brand that's either perfect for your style of fishing, or not so much. We've used 13 Fishing gear for years when ice fishing. Their rods provide the ultra sensitive tip on them that's difficult to find in other brands, especially for an affordable price. We've just started using some of their open water gear and have been just as pleased with it. This reel is light and smooth. It's a small to average size. Not one of those massive baitcasting reels. It doesn't add much weight to the rod. It's easy to adjust and it casts beautifully. Long casts or even side flipping, it does well. I haven't had any problems with the line spooling all to one side or anything like that. The line spools evenly. Very pleased with it! ... show more

  • Defective/Repackaged?
Size: 6.6:1 Gear Ratio Style: Right Hand Retrieve
I purchased this reel after my son had purchased and used the 13 Fishing F1 which he and I both enjoy. I opted for the R1 to buy as a gift since at the time, at least, it was about $20 less. When I received it, I was too embarrassed to give it as a gift as it looked to be a repackaged return shipped in a dented box with the reel itself covered in fingerprints. So, I kept it hoping it would perform as well, or almost as well, as the F1. Unfortunately, at least this particular one is not even close. I cast it a couple of times with great results- and while I didn't really NEED a new reel, I was thinking... why not?, this is smooth! On the third, or fourth cast- with the same motion and effort, the reel emitted a "screaming" sound and my bait fell a good 20 feet short of my previous several targets. I tried again..same result. I thought maybe I was trying to throw harder, so I backed off my next few casts, only to hear the same screaming sound and watching my bait land 15 feet in front of me. So, I began to tweak the brake and backlash settings. At first, backing off of these worked...voila! But after a few casts, the screaming came back- and no matter how I tried to cast the reel, it would immediately scream (brake) and force a short cast. I spent an hour messing with the brake and backlash settings- even setting the backlash setting to "zero" to no avail. I then went and grabbed my son's F1 to see if I was somehow doing something wrong (I have been throwing baitcast reels for over 40 years, but didn't want to assume that it wasn't me). I threw his for an hour without a flaw. Conclusion? Either the R1 sucks, and no one should buy it ever, OR, I did actually get a defective, repackaged reel, which was my original suspicion. Either way, it is going back. It looks like the F1 and R1 price gap has narrowed, so go for the F1- it is AWESOME. But, consider buying it from a brick and mortar retailer to make sure you are getting a new reel, and not one that was repackaged and sold as "new". ... show more

  • Solid, basic baitcaster
Size: 6.6:1 Gear Ratio Style: Right Hand Retrieve
This is a solidly built bait caster, especially for its size . It's a size one, but has an outsized gearbox area, sturdy crank, and heavy-duty feeling build. I played with the magnetic brake, casting tension and drag and found them to be easy to adjust and smooth. I'm not a good enough baitcaster to fully judge the casting distance, but it seems very good so far. It's off season for fishing where I live, but I should be able to put one on this rig soon and will report if negative issues. I don't expect any, however, because this just feels right. ... show more
