It is not easy to find a latch that mates a steel gate to a wooden post. I am not sure why it says "Malleable" since this will not budge at all. I had to shave a bit off my posts as there as no way to bend these even a tiny bit wider...they are that tough. But depending on the application, they can be mounted regular or upside-down. The upside down mounting works if you don't have enough clearance between the gate and post, the latch will free-fall when locking, and then all you need is something to stop the travel (a screw, piece of wood, etc). Hard to explain I realize, but this worked great, even on my gates that were right up against the post. I just mounted it upside-down on the upper corner of the gate, and added a "stopper" on the post. The included bolt is the only potential downside to this latch, since it is a standard bolt, but custom bent. Thankfully, the bolt is very heavy duty and plenty of threads that I was able to put a great deal of force on it to keep it attached, without the bolt giving up. Really glad they make something like this. I never found another.

I replaced a very cumbersome chain + padlock with this + padlock and it works great, much easier to get in and out. My pole and gate were only about an inch apart, so I have to offset the gate a bit for it to close properly, but it works like a charm. Make sure you measure your posts so you can order the right size!

Bought these to prevent interlopers from breaking into our tennis and pickleball courts. The previous latches were basically thick (1/4") sheet metal. Anyone with enough muscle could push the gate open by bending the gate clasp open. These are solid cast iron. They can be bolted down very tight round the gate pole and with the serrated/spline surface it will dig into the pole so that no amount of force can make the clasp slip around the gate pole. No amount of force can be applied to the gate to bend the cast iron latch. I guess you could break it, but that would require an extreme amount of force that I do not believe even a large human could generate.

This is a very "rough" condition cast metal latch. Not suitable for entranceway as the manufacturing is low quality in appearance. Needs to go through a rough filling or grinding to "finish" the work.

The gate latch ordered from Home Depot was a pain to open and close as the back rubbed against the post and had to be handled and finessed just right every time. I lost my patience with it after about 3 days. Ordered this latch and I will never use another latch again!! Super smooth open and close and no grinding whatsoever. Installation couldn’t have been easier. This thing is sturdy as well. My dog (German Shepherd Mix) is an extremely heavy chewer and got ahold of the package after it was delivered so I had to find the latch in the yard. Thankfully it came assembled so the bolt or bracket weren’t lost. It’s more expensive than the Home Depot latch, but there’s absolutely no comparison between the two. Just suck up the cost and get this one. You’ll be grateful you did and you’ll save yourself the time of returning the other one that didn’t work.
