  • Used daily and I'd still recommend
Bottom line information: I've had this for 6 weeks, used daily, I had one problem with the gasket in-between the vessels that turned out to be a me problem, not a malfunction of the pot. I recommend this to anyone who is willing to keep their pot clean and not in a lazy mad rush to make coffee in the morning. If you would like to hear details: I purchased the 3 cup Moka Pot about six weeks ago and have used it nearly every day, sometimes two times a day. Finding the right amount a heat took some trial and error the first couple of days but once I found it I've been happy ever since. I have a gas stove with a small burner. Ideally you want to have a burner that does not have a wider circumference than the bottom of your pot. If you are in a mad rush every morning to make a pot of coffee or spoiled to the automatic brew of your conventional coffee maker this either may not be the process for you or make take some adjustment time. This is a process, I am often in a hurry on the mornings that I work so I grind coffee beans the night before. I do like to boil water in kettle first to get the water hot prior to putting in the bottom vessel as to not burn the coffee and it is done faster anyway. I not have a routine and know that my coffee is going to take about 10 min to brew once I get it on the stove but that is due to the amount of heat that I use. So I multi-task and it works fine but it is recommended that once it goes on the stove you stay close by to watch it, don't leave it completely unattended! This moka pot is a little small if I want more than one cup of coffee, so I've gotten in the habit of making an iced latte in the morning instead of a hot cup of coffee because it is summer in Texas and its too hot even in the mornings. However, I do plan on getting a bigger moka pot soon. I like strong coffee full of flavor and this moka pot does not disappoint! I've found that I am now spoiled to the flavor that this pot brings out. I've completely done away with my conventional maker which freed up a ton of space on my counter. I did a lot of research before purchasing this pot, I am very happy with my choice and plan on buying the same brand of the bigger pot. I also bought a manual coffee bean burr grinder that I love so I can control the size of my grind. For this pot I use a course grind that works great, something really fine would probably fall through the filter. Clean up is not a big deal to me. Once done I immediately unscrew the pieces and rinse out the top vessel, otherwise the sediment dries in there and makes it harder to clean. I also rinse the underside of the top vessel to clean off the remaining coffee grounds and ensure that there are no grounds under the gasket. It is possible to get the gasket out and clean it all thoroughly but I do not do that every time as I don't want to wear the gasket out or damage it by removing it often. I was lazy one morning and heard/felt a little crunch when I screwed the two pieces together and decided to make the coffee anyway and discovered that there was a coffee ground under the gasket which caused it to leak when it pressured up on the stove. That is the only time it's leaked, I just ensure that I cleaned it properly. By the time I drink my coffee it is cool enough to clean the bottom. Do not use soap! I dump the grounds out and rinse the filter under water, followed by rinsing the bottom vessel. I wipe all pieces down with a power towel as there will be a little coffee residue. I really do not have any complaints about this pot, it does take a little time and patience to get used to but now it is just my morning routine that is actually almost a therapeutic process. I love the flavor that I get. The coffee to me does not seem as hot as I would get out of a conventional pot so I just heat up my milk and creamer when I want it really hot, and use a frother to get it a little more creamy. So when I make it hot the frother helps in making more of a cappuccino depending on the amount of time I use the frother and how much air is added. I love iced lattes with this as the flavor goes a long way! I hope this helps someone out there. ... show more

  • A Decent Moka Pot
Size: 6-Cup Color: White
My first purchase had an issue with the gasket that wouldn't seal, but the company was responsive and provided a replacement no questions asked. The replacement works well. The company gives advice on brewing coffee with this moka pot that are just myths: "Use only cold water"- do not do this. Putting cold water in the base will subject the grounds to heat for longer, leading to bitter/off flavors in your coffee. Use hot water in the base and a low heat setting on the stove (if you're getting sputtery energetic coffee coming out of the spout, your heat is too high). "Only use cold water to clean" - this thing goes on your stove and makes hot coffee by boiling water. no water that comes out of your faucet should damage this unit in any way. "Do not use soap to clean" - this is the seasoning myth that you need to season your pot with coffee and coffee oils to get the coffee to taste right. It's nonsense. Coffee oils will be left in your moka pot if you clean only with cold water or without soap. These oils will (as oils do) oxidize over time leading to off flavors in your coffee. Wash your dishes with warm water and soap, your coffee will taste better. This moka pot does not make espresso. No moka pot does. It makes a coffee that is in between espresso and drip coffee. It's dark, it's strong, it can be wonderful, but it's not espresso. You can use pre ground coffee with this, but you're better off grinding your own. The grind should be finer than pre ground drip coffee, but not as fine as espresso. The wood handles are not wood. "Duh." you might think, "Why would they include combustible handles on something you put on a stove?" Many higher end moka pots have wooden handles. The heat should be low enough, and the handle far enough away from the source of heat, that the handle lighting on fire shouldn't be a thing. At this price point I should not have been surprised, but I was for some reason. The handles are comfortable to hold, and soft, but there's a bit of a mental disconnect in seeing wood, then feeling the material the handle is made out of. The coffee chamber is very thin and delicate. Again, not a surprise at this price point. There's nothing wrong with it, just not something that's going to stand up to rough use. The water chamber patinas immediately. This is to be expected as it's made from aluminum. Nothing to worry about. Overall, this is a good purchase. It looks nice, and if you're looking for a cheap moka pot, this one works and won't break the bank. Good for someone who is just getting into making coffee with a moka pot and wants some practice before blowing dough on a more expensive model. ... show more
