I WAS RELUCTANT AT FIRST! I am going to write an unusual review. When we first took the mattress out of the bed and I lay down on it, my first thought was, "Oh NO! What have I done? This mattress is like laying on a padded brick." It took less then 24 hours for the memory foam to completely fluff up. So I gave it another day. And another. It was just SO FIRM! My old bed was like a soft billowy cloud that just wrapped around you. So I called Amazon to check on their return policy. They told me to wait a week and see how I felt, and then we could initiate the return process. I AM SO GLAD I WAITED! I now LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this bed!! Here's why: I SLEEP LIKE A BABY THAT SLEEPS THROUGH THE NIGHT! I have never slept so good in my whole life! I didn't realize it until about 2 weeks went by. I realized, I'm not getting up at night to briefly check the alarm clock time, go to the bathroom etc. No. It is literally a SLEEP MAGNET! I lie down on it, and 5 minutes later, I'm out cold! No more tossing and turning to fall asleep. NO MORE INSOMNIA! I find I am sleeping about exactly 7 hours straight without waking up once. I don't even notice if my husband is beside me in the bed or not. If he moves, I am not aware at all. Even though I was sleeping great,for two weeks I just couldn't seem to part with our old mattress. I kept having doubts like, "but what if it is just a bit TOO firm? Will I regret tossing our old mattress?" (It was still in our hall. I know I sound like Goldilocks here, but to be absolutely certain we could trash our old mattress once and for all, I took this mattress off, put it in the hall where our old one was, and put the old one back on. The next two nights were the worse sleep nights of my life. Though my old bed is like falling into a fluffy hammock, I realize now that I have not slept hardly at all for years! No telling how many times I wake up at night! So I switched back again to the Zinus mattress. And I also went ahead and shelled out a little bit more money and added an extra layer of padding with a Sleep Innovations 4-Inch Dual Layer Mattress Topper - Gel Memory Foam and Plush Fiber also found on Amazon ($184.10). That made the bed absolutely PERFECT. Very firm support, but a soft topper. If you have bad back issues, or trouble sleeping this bed is for you! It may be a bit of an adjustment at first, but wait a few days, or add just one more layer of foam as we did. In fact at first, my back was just slightly sore, but that's because it was used to being curved like the letter "C" at night. Now every part of my spine is firmly supported, and zero pain anywhere. I am 51 yo, and wake up feeling refreshed. My bed is also on platform risers, and because the bed is perfectly FLAT, it doubles as a workspace (wrapped all our Christmas presents on it). It's easy to fold laundry, etc. because it is firm and perfect height. We both love this bed so much, I hope by next Christmas to replace our Queen size bed in the other bedroom. My 11 yo son loves it too, and now he wishes he could have one too. Conclusion: It may seem to firm at first, but give it a few days. Your body may be readjusting. Now I realize it's the best bed we ever bought! The price is totally reasonable and so convenient having it delivered to your door! PS -- This mattress also has individually wrapped coils, so you don't have to worry about springs going bad and that adds to it's firmness. I think next time, we may try the green tea 10" memory foam only (no springs) as it reviews as being firm, but probably slightly less than this one. Still, I am a converted believer now in this firm bed. Last thoughts: HOTEL OWNERS/MANAGERS should order these beds! With concern over bedbugs etc., stains etc., these beds are so reasonably priced, you could afford to replace mattresses several times a year if necessary. Eighteen months ago due to severe spinal stenosis I gave up my once awesome but currently sagging 20 year old beauty rest mattress in favor of sleeping directly on my board like box springs with a mattress topper. For a while it helped but at 68 years old I finally realized I needed at least a little bit of cushion or give. After reviewing pretty much every mattress on the planet for the last six months I decided on an inexpensive bed in a box type of mattress. I didn't want to spend a lot in case it didn't work out. I have had coil spring mattresses for over 60 years so I decided to stick with that familiar feel. However, I definitely needed the firmest mattress I could find… a step above the wooden board I had been sleeping on. Last Monday, July 28th I ordered the Zinus performance plus extra firm 10 inch queen mattress. I received it three days later on Thursday shipped from Amazon. It came in a long box about 90 pounds. I maneuvered it from the porch on its end all the way to my bedroom. Not too bad for a 68 year old woman with a bad back! I set it on the bed and unpacked it with no problem. I slowly cut the wrapper off as instructed and the mattress immediately started inflating and expanding. The smell was very mild and reminded me of dried hay. 10 hours later when I went to bed the smell was completely gone. Before I made up the bed I laid on the mattress for a few minutes to test the firmness. It is very firm but with that tiny bit of give that you get from a spring mattress. Since the 10 inch style has very little padding on top of the springs I decided to use my 3 inch Novafirm gel memory foam topper from Costco. If I was a little younger and not so sore I probably wouldn't need it. I also have a very nice bamboo made in the USA mattress pad that I'm using on top of that. Now the results. These last four nights I feel like I died and went to heaven! I have not slept this well in over two years. I feel like I am sleeping in a $2000 bed! I am not waking up six or seven times a night and it is sooo comfortable. Can't tell you how grateful I am to have found this bed and at such a good price. I was so apprehensive about this purchase and am so relieved and happy about the results! I know this was a very long review but I wanted all of you out there to have enough information in one review to help you make a decision. Also you already know my age but I am 5 foot four and 168 pounds if that helps. Also if you buy the bed directly from Amazon it comes a bit faster. Amazon prime got it to me in 3 days but I had to pay $20 tax. If you order it from Amazon and pick vendor Sleep Revolution( which is like the store front of Zinus) to order it from it takes about 7 to14 days and you don't pay tax. But I wanted it really fast. I just want to end this review with a huge thank you to Zinus for making a product that has so vastly improved the quality of my life!!................... Today is April 21, 2021 and it has been about 3 1/2 years since I bought this wonderful mattress. A lot of times you will see a review for a product and then never hear from that consumer again. But I love this bed so much I felt I should offer a follow up. First of all this mattress is in exactly the same shape as when it was new. I can detect no wear of any kind or any sagging. I am now 72 years old and still have my back issues but I have never slept so well in any other bed that I have owned. I still can’t believe that I paid less than $250 for a “bed in a box” coil spring mattress of this quality. I own the 10 inch mattress and as I stated I at first used a 3 inch memory foam topper but I ended up getting rid of it because foam is just too hot for me. Besides the top of this bed is soft enough even though the mattress is super firm and I use a bamboo USA made plush mattress pad cover which is perfect. This combination allows the mattress to breathe and the whole sleeping experience is cool and comfortable rather than hot and suffocating. I think the problem with foam is your body heat does not dissipate very well and I am a very hot sleeper. So in closing I will just say this. This mattress is worth every penny. If you are looking for a very firm bed that is really comfortable and sleeps cool look no further. I hope this follow up review is helpful.
