After 15 years, my memory foam mattress and its box spring were more than at the end of their lives and needed to be replaced. Buying a mattress is a very personal and expensive decision and with so many mattresses on the market of which most you can't see or tryout physically because they are sold exclusively online, it is very difficult to determine which one is right for you -- and if you have a sleeping partner, it makes it even more difficult to find one that will work for both. My husband has had both a hip replacement and lower back fusion surgeries and needless to say he is very suspicious of the mattress-in-a-box concept and was skeptical of all of the best options I found online. To complicate matters, his back situation makes it difficult for him to go to a local mattress store to try out options there, so it took us FOREVER to come to an agreement about what mattress to buy and where. I gave up after a month of off-and-on searching but then it happened -- a particularly sleepless night on our old mattress with extreme back pain in the morning. That was the final straw. That nite forced us to get it in gear and make a final decision. We decided to try Zinus for three reasons: 1) the reviews online overall were great; 2) the company sold a sturdy platform foundation we could purchase separately so no box spring was needed; and, 3) the price for the mattress was incredibly reasonable for the options and features included. I have to say that we were still pretty skeptical about ordering a mattress online but figured if it turned out to be a big disappointment, we weren't out that much cash (and neither of us could fathom how we'd ever get a big queen-sized mattress back into a small box for a return!) Our Zinus hybrid mattress took about a week to get here, but came as advertised. I will say that the outer box was really beat up and broken, but no damage to the packaging around the mattress itself, thank goodness! I set up the SmartBase foundation unit myself (really easy and fast) and managed to get the mattress onto the base with a little maneuvering (it was pretty heavy - you should have seen me struggling to get it up the stairs to the bedroom!) I unpacked it according to the directions and almost immediately it opened up to the 14" height. Since the initial "roll out" I have not seen/felt any dips or collapsed spots as another reviewer experienced. All of this is very good and well but the real test is the sleep test. I NEVER look forward to having a new mattress because it always takes me at least a week of sleepless nights to break in one. In fact, I had readied the guest bedroom in anticipation of having to transfer over in case I found myself tossing and tuning a night or two while getting use to the new Zinus. You know all of those reviews you've read about people claiming to wake up from the best sleep they've ever had or with no back pain whatsoever? Well, that has never been my experience, at least not for the first week of the breaking-in stage. Until now. Wow. This bed is fantastic! I am a back sleeper generally. This mattress provides complete support of my lower back as well as all other areas. No transfer of motion, no squeaks, and very easy to change positions, unlike some memory foam mattresses where you sink in and good luck getting out of the indentation you've made. The first night and every night has been a sound sleep experience for me. And yes, for the first time in forever, I get up and out with no back pain. (Thought I would never say that!) My husband with all of his back issues has said that his sleep has improved and while he will likely never be pain free in the morning, this mattress has drastically improved his sleep experience. I was concerned about some of the reviews stating that this particular Zinus mattress model we had ordered was too firm. However, I'm finding it to be just the right amount of support and comfort. I will update my review if I'm finding that the mattress is not performing as expected, but so far I am satisfied completely with my purchase. This experience has not taken the anxiety out of purchasing a mattress online for me totally, but I feel fortunate this purchase worked out well.

Awesome mattress but definitely pay attention to the heights of the mattress and READ everything including a bunch of reviews before purchasing! I had a spring mattress and was in search of a new mattress at an affordable price. I went into a bunch of mattress stores to test out different mattresses. I hate all memory foam mattresses but was surprised that the cool gel hybrid mattresses which included layers of foam and spring coils I knew that was what I wanted. I fell in love with the Leesa Mattress but could not afford the $1000 price tag. I did a ton of research on an affordable mattress like the Leesa and kept stumbling across this mattress over and over again. I was nervous about ordering a mattress online without trying it but skimmed a few reviews and decided to go for it anyway because of the amazing price. When i saw the comparison to the leesa it was actually for the 12 inch zinus mattress. I searched for the zinus mattress in the Amazon app on my phone and found it but it came up as 10 inch. I didn't realize that the height of the mattress determines the firmness. The 10 inch is the hardest mattress, the 12 inch is a medium firmness and the 14 inch is the softest. My husband measured our box spring mattress at 10 inch and thought the 12 or 14 would be too tall with our platform bed so ordered the 10 inch. The 10 inch for this mattress is about the same firmness as the 8 inch Casper mattress we tested out at a sleep number store. (If you want to test out a mattress in a sleep number store to get an idea of which level if firmness you like best! I think the 10 inch Casper is probably around the same firmness as the 12 inch Zinus). I definitely don't like a mattress that's too hard but can't sleep on one that's too soft either. The 10 inch was too firm for us with our Ikea brimnes storage bed using bed slats. We put the 10 inch in a guest room on the zinus platform bed frame which is a little more comfortable and now have the 12 inch our bed which is just the right level of firmness and is extremely comfortable with our Ikea bed! So if you have a platform bed and are using bed slats definitely go with the 12 inch! The biggest downside of the cheaper price is delivery. Ordering from a mattress store and having a bed delivered the mattress is usually brought in the house for you by the delivery people. The box from Amazon was left in the middle of our driveway when we were at work. The mattress is rolled up inside a very long and heavy box. My husband had to call a friend over to help him be able to pick up the box and get it into the house. Once we had it inside and opened it was completely ready to go in less than 2 hours so we were able to sleep on it that night! When we ordered the second 12 inch I had it delivered on a weekend when I knew my husband would be home. My husband and the delivery guy carried the box into the house together. I think its definitely worth the cheaper price because it seems like a really amazing good quality mattress! Just make sure you figure out delivery and getting the box inside the house ahead of time. My husband and I couldn't carry the box inside by ourselves. Its definitely VERY heavy. I couldn't imagine having to carry it up stairs in an apartment building or being able to get it inside if I lived alone! Overall still would absolutely order the 12 inch again. Our friend who has a Leesa mattress told me "This is just as comfortable as ours. We should have saved the $700 and gotten this one instead!" Thanks for a great product Zinus! (Ps I had a question so went on the Zinus website directly and called Zinus customer service directly and they were amazing! So even though you are ordering from Amazon the company is easy to reach and extremely helpful if you need to contact them with any questions or problems!)

Good News - My wife is "The Princess and The Pea" - Too hard! Too Soft! - Very hard to please RE a comfortable mattress. The hybrid construction was intriguing - so we gave it a try - AND SHE WAS HAPPY - said it was perfect!! Bad News - The chemical smell!!! - based on customer reviews we aired out this mattress for 5 days before sleeping on it - but the smell did not diminish in any way - began to affect health! So we had to return it. ++ to the prompt Amazon return / credit policy - they scheduled a pickup - and two guys had to wrestle this king sized mattress into their truck - and they commented on the smell too - even after it was in our garage for another 5 days waiting for pickup. I think Amazon should take a hard look at this - Is there a potential health issue? If you have ANY sensitivity to chemical smells DO NOT BUY THIS MATTRESS!!

I've been suffering from chronic lower back pain, and I suspected that my mattress was at least partially contributing to the problem. A friend of mine recommended this mattress because she has similar issues. I laid in hers, loved the firmness, and decided to give it a try. The mattress arrived in 4 days (2 days faster than I was expecting, nice!) and I slept in it for the first time last night. WOW! I prefer my mattress a bit on the firmer side, but still with a bit of cushion, and this is the perfect balance!! I fell asleep like a baby, which is a big deal! I also struggle with a bit of insomnia, and I'm starting to suspect that I might have been sleeping on the wrong type of mattress. Suffice to say, I'm very, very pleased with my purchase, and am super grateful to my friend for her recommendation! So far, so great!!
