  • Good for a urban fire!
Review is for a wood splitter which s in no way a heavy duty one. It was easy to assemble. The blade is sharp enough for small wood. You need to mount this thing to a stump or a stable surface and have it anchored, otherwise it will tip over. You also need a good heavy hammer. This is good for an urban fire and not for a big job. At a very reasonable cost of $20 this is a good buy for the occasional use and to try your hand in log splitting. ... show more

  • Very sturdy
This works great on logs that are small enough to fit inside the top ring. The ring helps keep the log from slipping.

  • If you regularly use firewood, get a larger, better quality splitter.
If I wasn't part of the Amazon Vine program where I get free products to review, I would not have considered this wood splitter. It's currently priced at $20 on Amazon. You 100% get what you pay for. Right away I can tell this is a cheap version of an existing product. This company took an existing product and cut corners with manufacturing and materials to make it as cheap as possible. It comes unassembled in 3 parts to save on shipping costs from China. It is held together with 4 screws. The inner posts aren't even drilled with holes. The 4 perpendicular screws hold the two inner posts in place with just friction. Other more expensive better quality splitter models are fully assembled and fully welded together. Spend a bit more and get a better quality product. After assembling the splitter I tested it out over the weekend to split some dead branches in the backyard into kindling for a firepit. The opening is 6.5 inches, so REALISTICALLY, the max size thickness branch it can comfortably hold is about 5 inch thick branches. Branches are not perfect cylinders. They have bends and knots in them. Be aware of the size. You will NOT be splitting logs with this small wood splitter. It's for kindling and small branches. Occasional use in the backyard. If you have a fireplace and regularly use firewood, spend a little more and get a larger, stronger, fully welded splitter. And definitely one that is not held together with "friction screws." After 5-6 large branches the screws loosened on me and needed to be re-tightened with the Allen key. I'll have to tape the Allen key onto the base of the splitter so I can re-tighten the 4 screws after each time I use it. I don't live in the woods. I'm not a lumberjack here. But still, this cheap splitter is utterly annoying to use. ... show more

  • A wood splitter that can't split wood isn't a very good wood splitter.
It was very easy to put together, that's probably the only positive thing here. In terms of doing it's job (chopping wood), I tried multiple pieces of very dry wood, yet I was unable to split anything. I tried using both an ax and a small heavy metal mallet and in both instances, the wood would splinter MAYBE 2-3 inches. Clearly denting the wood isn't going to help you split anything. In the process of hitting the wood the wood splitter kept falling over, so you'll definitely want to mount this if you hope to have any chance splitting wood. Regardless, the blades are not sharp enough, so you'll just get dented wood from a MOUNTED wood splitter. The splitter seemed to have a decent weight and balance to it, but was not enough weight or balance when trying to use. I grew up splitting wood with an ax so I'm not sure what else I could do to make this work as advertised. Not recommended; get something a substantial and a LOT sharper. ... show more

  • Good for straight grain wood
Requires 4 set hex screws to assemble and the hex wrench is included. Simple to assemble. Tested with white oak, red oak and cherry that has been down at least 2 years. I selected some pieces that had very few if any knots. The cherry and red oak were easy enough but the stringy white oak was a bit different. I think if the flat section (sharp edge) was a bit longer it would be helpful because the white oak would get started and after the split started the wood would spring back up off the splitting edge. Even when halfway through the wood. I was using it on the ground and noticed that due to the lack of weight in the base it did tend to bounce around a little bit. This splitter is much better priced than others I have seen online and I believe it is worth its price. The base being heavier and the longer flat edge would be improvements I can see. Just remember to select the straightest grain pieces you have and it should work well for making kindling. ... show more

  • good for SMALL wood
Just because it CAN hold 6" logs doesn't mean it should. lol. once you get past a 3" diameter or so, this is hard to use. It's good for kindling though, which is what it's advertised for. For the larger logs - we are just going to let them sit longer to dry out completely. It's too much work to split them! ... show more

  • Inexpensive splitter, but not heavy duty at all
These Wood Splitters (all of them) require a fair bit of hammering to split wood. They are best for small diameter wood, making kindling or soft wood (i.e. Pine) The problem with this low-cost splitters is it is held together with machine screws which will require tightening over and over again. The amount of force you have to hit the wood with, will soon loosen the screws. Other models use actual bolts that thread between both pieces , whereas this one you just tighten the bold against the other piece. You'll either need Loctite on the screws or keep tightening after each use. If you want to split wood this way, I recommend you pay more to get a better splitter. ... show more

  • OK but a bit light
I understand that shipping it disassembled saves on cube space, but this is a structure I'm going to wail on and I'm a bit concerned that the sections are thinner than others I've used and the pieces are held together by screws bearing against shafts. So far it has held up.
