Breaking the knife in took me all of less than a minute. The YSTKC Ceramic Paring Knife is a ceramic knife that definitely didn't need sharpening as I tested it out cutting excess fat off off steaks that were going on the grill. The great thing about ceramic knives is they don't hold odors nor are they prone to rusting. For beginners in the cooking world, college kids or first time home owners this knife and ceramic knives as a whole are a good choice. I cook A LOT, and share a lot of my cooking tips and tricks as I use new tools. It allows you dear readers to not only to replicate my testing, but to perhaps try a new recipe and maybe even enjoy a pretty good meal - spreading your taste bud horizons. Since I review a lot of kitchen gadgets and what nots, I share my recipes freely with you. I hope you enjoy this one. Cutting vegetables (obviously after washing and getting out a second pair of gloves to prevent contamination) was a breeze. Asparagus ends cut like butter with this knife. Cutting through Yukon Gold potatoes to steam with white wine (I used 1/3 cup of my favorite pinot), a couple sprigs of rosemary, Urfa Biber Pepper and salt (don't be stingy on the salt. Potatoes as well as tomatoes can take it!) wrapped in aluminum foil. Allow the cut potatoes to steam for about 40 minutes on indirect heat on the grill. You can opt to make a country mash and just mash them a bit (removing the rosemary) or do as we do and just eat them, adding additional salt and my favorite pepper I'll brief you on to taste. Urfa Biber Pepper is slightly salty and smoky tasting. I use it in many of my dishes as a substitute for regular pepper. Yes, you can order it here on Amazon which is where I get mine. I've even used it in many dessert dishes, but I digress... The knife can reduce the coarseness of the Urfa Biber pepper if you like should you not be like me and have multiple salt and pepper mills though I like this pepper a bit on the coarse side. Sadly, I didn't like the look of it and didn't even recognize that the sleeve to cover the knife was supposed to be a hippopotamus. The only way I figured that out was by reading the description on the label. I guess it was a bit too abstract and being the color pink, but it doesn't bother me in the least. How the knife performs is far more important to me. For the price, this knife performs VERY well. The hippopotamus sleeve fits the knife securely though I do find it a bit too thick for my storage unit where other paring knives with sleeves are stored in my utensil rack. Now I just need to train the hubby not to place more than three knives in that compartment so the drawer doesn't become a pain to open. I love that the hippopotamus sleeve for the knife fits secure, so the knife is worth training the hubby - which may take years!😂 This YSTKC Ceramic Paring Knife hits my gift giving list. With the price being under $25.00, the quality exceeding what I felt the company charged and overall value is great. The box is lackluster as it was a plain white box, but as someone who is gift wrapping challenged I always leave gift wrapping to my perfectionist husband who can wrap gifts far better than I can. In the beginning I was washing this played by hand because I didn’t know how quality the materials were. I have now run it through the dishwasher three different times and the knife seems to be just as great as it was when I first got it and it’s still extremely sharp. The blade design of this knife significantly reduces chopping time and effort when prepping dinner and I’m so thankful for that. Admittedly, I chose this knife for the hippo, and it does not disappoint--this is a fun item for your kitchen! In terms of utility, it does just fine for the usual stuff--cutting fruits and vegetables for a salad or a smoothie, that kind of thing. It isn't often you find a "fun" knife for the kitchen. This 4" paring knife is, yes, very sharp for cutting all sorts of things, but also because it includes a sheath to protect you from it and it from you. It is a ceramic knife, never needs sharpening, but like all things ceramic, can be broken. The sheath will save the day if you drop it (and the knife) on a stone floor. Which would be a shame, because then you'd loose the fun of pulling the knife from it's sheath. Together, the sheath is in the shape of, well, a hippo's head, with the handle of the knife forming its body. I about fell out of my chair laughing when I opened the package and saw it for the first time. You see, the photo on Amazon hides the obviously common utility of a hippo and a knife. Modestly priced, the knife is totally functional, fits your hand nicely and cuts extremely well. You'd never guess you were cutting your vegetables while handling the back end of a hippo. I use this knife nearly every day, and get a chuckle every time I get it out, and I think you will too. You'd never guess that a hippo is easier to find in the knife drawer than a knife. I didn’t have the highest expectations. It’s cute, ergonomic, and well-designed. The sheath fights snugly and securely. The knife itself 
 I wouldn’t say “flimsy” by any means, but you can tell it isn’t really full tang or balanced. I’d call it light to medium duty. Don’t get me wrong, it’s solid and doesn’t doesn’t wobble or wiggle around, but if you’re used to full tang, solid knives, it might feel unsettling at first. That said, it is a paring knife, and light duty cuts are exactly what paring knives are for. I’ve used it on apples, bananas, strawberries, and potatoes so far, and my word does it cut smoothly. I have much more expensive knives that lose their edge in 5 minutes and cut worse than this. Honestly your first cut will surprise you. Worth the price in the end, but I’m not expecting a lot of longevity with regular use. I came into this wanting to give it 4 stars for the construction, but honestly I feel like that isn’t entirely fair. It does exactly what it’s supposed to do, and does it well. It feels nice, it looks nice, and it holds its edge well. 4.5 stars would feel better, but full marks feels more fair than 4. ... show more

This is a light weight ceramic knife with sheath. I took it to work so I would have have something rather sharp there to cut up fruit, slice a sandwich, etc. It amazes me how sharp it is being ceramic. I wash it by hand so I don't know how it would do in the dishwasher. I think the pink color is cute, but if you have children, make sure they know this is not a toy! Because of the sheath, this is a great idea to take to a picnic, or on the road to cut wildflowers, or just to keep the knife in your drawer and not have to worry about cutting yourself.
