I got it in my mind that I needed a kotatsu, so I obsessively researched how to get one and oh boy, they're not cheap to get in the US. This one looked overpriced and I was afraid of breaking it, and I was worried I wouldn't be tall enough since I'm a bigger woman (it's actually fine). I looked everywhere. I considered the IKEA coffee table hack even, but I really wanted the peace of mind of fire safety and quality of life features of the real thing (like a topper the extends the full width of the table!) You can find cheap and used ones on Japanese auction sites, but the buying services charge hundreds to ship anything remotely heavy. So I was really left with the choice of spending $200 or $400+. Just get this one. Installation could not be easier. Very straightforward. It's plastic, but it's the sturdy kind. I still don't put all of my weight on it when standing up however. The topper is double sided and, I dunno, it's just nice to have one that's made for this. It's satisfying when it's completely flush with the table. The heater cord has a hook to loop through so it's never in the way. The heater really heats up, I had to turn it down. The switch is in Japanese, but the little "walking man" symbol is "on." You do need the converter everyone mentions, however everyone recommends the 1000W one. You do not need 1000W. The heater only draws 300W, just read the description. Save money and get the 500W. On the back there will be a switch between 100V and 120V. Kotatsu tables are magical. Now that winter is here in full force, I spend several hours each day cuddled up with the kotatsu. In order to get the most out of this table, you do need a few more items than are included in this purchase. A rug or tatami mat to put underneath the table. A queen or king sized comforter to put in between the heated part of the table and the removable tabletop. And either a floor couch (which is what I have) or some floor cushions/seats (I recommend the ones sold at bed bath and beyond). Lastly, you’ll need a power converter, to make sure this Japanese appliance works with American/European outlets. The Kotatsu table is low to the ground, which means that if you’re going to use it as intended, you have to be low to the ground too. This won’t work well if you’re trying to use it with a traditional couch. You have to be sitting either on the floor or close to it. It can be very toasty when you have your legs directly underneath the heated base, but with a comforter trapping the heat, you can have the table a bit farther from you and it remains toasty, not sweltering. I wish there was a way to adjust how hot the heater is, but I’ve adapted. The hardest thing is that my cats want to nap under the Kotatsu, but the instructions say that’s not safe! This has made them very grumpy. The table is easy to assemble, and although the switch is in Japanese it is easy to remember which one is on and which is off. I’ll start off this review by saying I bought this product and it shipped to me in record time. So A+ on speedy delivery. That said there were a number of things that could be improved. First off the table was damaged, which I was bummed about considering the price of 200+ dollars. Secondly I will say that the table requires a converter if you are using it in the US. I bought one with a max capacity of 500W, which runs smoothly so far. The heat is great, a little intense for my South Carolina house, but nice for the winter. I do wish it was a little taller as my legs are long and I worry about bumping into the heater. I added some blocks to the bottom though so hopefully it won’t be an issue. Assembly on this table was simple and easy to achieve. It comes with a screw driver so all you have to do is put the legs on. Overall a little pricy for the quality, but should suite my needs just fine. ... show more

Edit 2023- this thing has survived several moves, and assembly and disassembly. It is still my favorite piece of furniture and still going strong. Incredible little guy, love him. Currently fighting three cats for Kotatsu rights. Despite the instructions being in Japanese, it was stupid easy to figure out how to put this little dude together, and it even came with a cute little tool so you didn’t have to get anything out. Just attach the legs and BAM, you have a Kotatsu. The box arrived a wee bit beaten up, as if it had gotten into an altercation with the person carrying it, but the table inside was fine. This thing is very comfortable, and the adjustable heat is quite handy. I’d like to add further review for the winter when it’ll really get its workout, but for now it is summer and so it is just hanging out as my coffee table. Hopefully I find a futon I like soon, but until then I have two blankets. And cats. 3 cats. ... show more

I absolutely love this kotatsu table! Unfortunately I got it at the end of winter so I only used the heating function once to test if it was running. The comforter over the table alone was enough to keep it warm for the last few cold days. Unfortunately the edging of the table was cracked in one spot and that's not very pleasing as it raises concerns about how long the table will last and at this price point I would expect better quality control. (I got the comforter and rug set from ebay) ... show more
