  • Most dynamic and engaging sound
1/15/24: I should mention that I connected my old Yamaha rx 1070 and no HDMI or HDCP issues. The A8A started giving HDCP 2.2 errors. No video on TV. Have to restart receiver to get compatibility. This happened after a recent firmware update. Very unfortunate since it's an awesome receiver. Update 12/27: so I've had this receiver for just over a month and I can say with confidence that I'm thoroughly enjoying it. I have disconnected to Arundel 1723 speakers and the sound is just outstanding. I leave the surround AI on all the time and I've compared the sound with it on and off and the difference is perceptible. The surround AI makes dialogue more intelligible and creates a wide sound field. The best part again are the scenes which you can configure to your heart's content. I will point to the fact that initially I did the YPAO angle measurement incorrectly. There are two parts to the stand the tripod(propeller type)and a stand that fits onto it. The fourth position is high up on the stand after it is fixed to the propeller stand. Use a tripod stand to achieve great results. If you have Dolby Atmos and/ or front presence and rear presence speakers turn off the speaker virtualization and this will give you better sound. Also when doing the calibration choose your measurement points at least two to three feet apart. To give you some context I have tested the Onkyo RZ70, Sony 7000ES ,marantz Cinema 50 and Denon X4800. The Yamaha a8a outshines all these receivers. It is a blast to watch movies. The sound is very punchy especially in the mid bass and the lower bass is literally room shaking. The surround AI feature is awesome and I would advise that you use it. I was initially skeptic about this but it creates a sense of immersion as if you are right in the movie. The dialogue is crystal clear and very easily intelligible. I would strongly recommend using AI or at least giving it a try. The remote is backlit which is great. One of the most powerful features of this receiver is scenes. With this, you can assign various functions to one button on the remote. The only downside I see is the on-screen display which takes up the whole screen. It should be a banner at the bottom. The other issue I have is in the music cost app where on the input screen the whole real estate is taken up by a symbol that you can choose. I would have preferred instead some more useful information like the number of speakers being used. This is one of the best receivers I've ever heard. You will not be disappointed if you buy this. ... show more

  • Happy happy
Used this to replace my aging Pioneer Elite SC37. My first time using Yamaha. I have had Sony Elites and other Pioneer Elites (each one the flagship model). So far the sound quality is great. I am still old school with 400 DVD disc changer and 400 BD disc changer so some older type input connections are a must along with 6 other HDMI devices. This handles them all nicely as well as connectivity with all my new tech. Low volume is clear and crisp and when I want to crank it up with a great movie who needs to go to an IMAX theater... ... show more

  • Disappointed
Ordered my A8A AV receiver nov. 25th. Amazon. Replaced my Yamaha RX v863.after the new install the unit would only play audio NOT Video unless I factory reset the unit every time I wanted to watch TV… talked to Yamaha tech he said that it is a bad receiver. I had to disconnect it,package it back up.(it’s heavy) I ask Yamaha to have ups come to the house to pick it up…. They refused my request. I took it to an ups drop off . Now wait for the refund…. I don’t know which AV receiver I should buy now…. Any suggestions??? ... show more

  • Feature Rich - Great Piece Of Kit
Top of the line in terms of audio and video quality. Tremendous flexibility. Highly recommend. My second Yamaha. They know how to build great A/V receivers. Using the Yamaha a few months in. Still really great. Liking I can stream from a lot of different vendors. Two problems have come up that impact me: 1.) Speaker connectors are so cheaply made, it's very frustrating. They are fragile and do not accept spade connectors. 2.) I cannot set the unit to bi-wire main speakers when configured with 7.2.4. It forces a zone in the mix and you lose an extra channel of amplification. I should be able to choose between a zone or bi-amping my speakers. I do not plan on ever using a zone. I want all of the channels of amplification available to me. One can bi-amp the main speakers in 7.2.4, but, only with an external amplifier. ... show more

  • Mostly Satisfied, but a little let down!
I am upgrading from a Yamaha RXA-870 which is still a great amp and I love it, but wanted the ATMOS with 11.2 surround... The RXA-870 has a far superior Web App to where you can control so much ore. The A8A has a lot of control, but seems to be missing the Web App to better control the Surround Sound, The A8A seems to be more automated... I am also having issues where when I calibrate the speakers it continually gives me a message that there is a wiring problem with my Right Speaker, but nothing is wrong with the Right Speaker... When they say that it take 45 Minutes to update the software... They are not lying.. Downloaded to USB and Updated via USB... and it took 45 Minutes... It was flawless, but not as fast as I was hoping. When they say this unit is heavy... they were being 100% truthful... I had to get a neighbors help to set it on the shelf that I wanted it on.. and if you put it on a shelf... IT HAD BETTER BE HEAVY DUTY! - ... show more
