Description

Style:Mountable Monitor Speaker | Size:8" | Color:Black | Configuration:Single Unit When selecting studio reference monitors for mixing and music production, one consideration takes precedence above all others - accuracy. Beginning with the legendary NS-10M, and continuing with the MSP and previous HS Series, this new lineup shares a design philosophy that emphasizes sonic purity without any coloring or alternation of the original sound. While many manufacturers seek to enhance the sound of their monitors to make them sound impressive, Yamaha studio monitors are designed to achieve the best possible mix by ensuring that the sound from your speakers is true to the original. HS Series nearfield reference monitors are the embodiment of this philosophy, delivering a concise sound image, high resolution, and flat response.

  • If you are an engineer - look no further
Style: Monitor Speaker Size: 5" Color: Black Configuration: Single Unit
OMG! I own HS80s which is the older/larger versions of these guys and OH MAN does it sound the same. Of course sub 100hz isn't as juicy but I got these because my space changed and is much smaller (30-50 sqf). I did a shootout with these, KRK 5's, XR 624's (couldn't find the MRMK3's), JBL LSR305's, and some Genelec 8330A's. I will say the Genelec's won the shoot out by a good stretch. Problem is the Genie's are like 800 bills a piece. These Yamaha's may not have had the low end response the Genie's had but man are they much more clear than the rest I listed. Most of the others have a very colored sound, mainly dipping the mids. The HS5's were the flattest of the bunch. it's worth the $100 bucks more for these guys over the rest. DO IT! It's worth the hassle of sending back if you don't like them. ... show more

  • A cross between NS10 and Dynaudio BM6A
Style: Monitor Speaker Size: 6.5" Color: Black Configuration: Single Unit
I have these HS7s next to a pair of Adam T7Vs. For years I had real NS10s next to S3As. So this is my cheap reprise of my old mix rig. Anyone you hear claiming these are flat, pipe some pink or gray noise through them and compare with an actually flat monitor (T7V pretty close) and watch the blood drain from their face. These are mid-forward like the NS10, but halfway warm like the Dynaudio. It’s a nice modernization of the classic sound, and cheaper than the Avantone reissue. It’s nice to listen on these and may give a good reference for mixing alongside something more accurate. It’s best to have a sub help, and since it’s 2019, one sub will not do, you need as many subs as you can fit in your room and Room EQ Wizard and a lot of crawling on the floor to get them tuned. Room treatment is just for flutter echo, we remember, unless you build yourself a full anechoic chamber. Annoyances include the front lights though I don’t mind, the fact they pick up cellphone interference (good warning it might be creeping into your recordings too though), no front panel power switch though those are getting rare today. They get pretty loud but do break up and not in the same NS10 way. They don’t have much quiescent hiss. The Hs5 I think is too small to take seriously and the HS8 probably not as useful to me but may be better if you have no sub and nothing else to compare too. I got a nice deal on used ones at Amazon Warehouse. The match isn’t absolutely exact but it might not be factory sealed or maybe it’s just different breakin times that will even out. But again, I’m not really looking for accuracy from these. Still it’s fun to listen on them. ... show more

  • Excellent Sound Quality But High Noise Floor
Style: Monitor Speaker Size: 8" Color: Black Configuration: Single Unit
The build and sound quality of these speakers is top notch. In my acoustically treated studio the stereo imaging is superb and the high frequency detail is more than enough to fine tune a mix. However I'm disappointed with the high noise floor. There is a high frequency hiss from the high frequency driver and a 60Hz hum from the low frequency driver. The noise is loud enough that I can hear it when sitting my mix position 3-4 feet away from each unit. It is the same in both brand new units so I don't think they are defective. The noise is present even when the speakers are connected only to power, with no other cables attached. And I'm powering them through a Furman power conditioner so I don't think it is ground loop noise. After a few weeks of use, one of the speakers also has begun to make an intermittent noise similar to the sound made by a speaker phone when a cell phone is placed too close to it. ... show more

  • Changed how music sounds for me
Style: Monitor Speaker Size: 8" Color: Black Configuration: Single Unit
I bought these on a recommendation to move away from audio speakers to reference monitors. The basic idea is that these do not "paint" the sound but instead given a totally accurate output of the master/mix. This means you can hear the lower quality in a poor audio file (e.g. a poor quality mp3 or audio stream) BUT when you listen to a high-quality input i.e. Itunes, vinyl they sound amazing. You can actually hear what the artist and/or professional sound engineer want you to hear. Not exaggerating when I say it makes songs I've listened to for 20 years sound new - I can hear things I never heard before. High and low-end response are nuts!! I added the HS8S sub to share the bass load - but these work well alone. I'd recommend buying these first and adding the sub as an up-spec. The build, design, and controls are all top-notch. Pro tip: buy Mogami Gold cables too. ... show more

  • These speakers are the best you can get at this price range
Style: Monitor Speaker Size: 5" Color: Black Configuration: Single Unit
These speakers are the best you can get at this price range. They are very clear and accurate in the high and mids but severely lacking in the low end. If you make bass intensive music you WILL NEED the sub woofer.

  • Translation Is Everything
Style: Monitor Speaker Size: 8" Color: Black Configuration: Single Unit
I have used many types of studio monitors, but these things are amazing, you just dial in the sound you want and they translate it to the next set of speakers you play your mix on, absolutely amazing, and can't beat the price. I am so glad I demoed these in a store first, I instantly could hear the problems with the other monitors that were on display, these are so colorless it makes mixing and mastering effortless. Really check these out, I've had much more expensive monitors and could never get the sound the way I wanted it to be. No wonder their big brother the NS-10's are in every studio in the world! ... show more

  • I like the room control and trim options as I do ...
Style: Monitor Speaker Size: 8" Color: White Configuration: Single Unit
These things truely live up to the reputation. They are so clean. As an electronic music producer I wanted clean, accurate, and precise sound. I have found comfort in these. I like the room control and trim options as I do not have a treated room for producing. If you're looking for some non enhanced studio monitors for production perfection or you want them simply for entertainment.... these will suffice and more! ... show more
