  • Great value, great beginner guitar, just comfy
Style: Guitar
Can't beat a solid-top Yamaha at this price. Build quality is not superb, but not terrible either. You can't buy a $1000 guitar for $200. This one hangs on my wall with more expensive guitars, but I'm as likely to play it just because it seems to "fit". Not too deep or shallow, not too cumbersome. It could benefit from a set of new strings, but I really like the 11mm string spacing, just a little bit more wiggle room. ... show more

  • Hard to beat.
Style: Guitar
When I received my first guitar, it had been crushed in shipping. Not a very good start. I was promptly sent a replacement. When I first started playing with this guitar, I wasn’t impressed. I played around with strings. I put a light set of elixers on. Holy cow. What a difference it made. I play this guitar more than my Gibson Hummingbird. For the money, this guitar is hard to beat. ... show more

  • Just a GREAT sounding Guitar! Especially for the money!
Style: Guitar
I have a few guitars and this is probably one of the cheaper acoustics, but I still can't help but come back to it over and over again. I prefer the sound over my Fender and WAY above my other knock-offs. It's just a GREAT-sounding acoustic guitar. Excellent, solid build quality, and SO much more than you would expect for an affordable model like this but I can't recommend it enough for new learners or old pros alike! ... show more

  • What a good catch for its price! Great sounding guitar :)
Style: Guitar
I was looking for a guitar that is cheap and good sounding. Of all the guitars in a price range of Less than $150, this guitar captured my attention and then looked for the reviews. After I searched in the worldwide web,I haven't seen as many reviews about this guitar, Yamaha FD01S. I just decided to buy this since, the fact that it's less than 150 bucks, it also has a SOLID top which I always consider when buying a guitar because I want the genuine acoustic tone. I've been playing guitar since 2005 and for me, I know what a good guitar is from other cheap sounding string instruments. Anyways, I bought my FD01S from J&R Music and Computer world for only 109 bucks which I can say the BEST deal ever. Then, placed my order and waited for about 8 days for the package to be delivered since the seller is from NY and I'm from CA. After the long wait, I received my guitar just today and I opened it within minutes after getting it from my doorstep. It's perfectly packaged, very secured and you'll know that the guitar can't be damaged. Then, I opened the box and took the instrument out. I was like "WOW! THIS IS FANTASTIC". I own two guitars way back and because I left my guitar in my home country, Philippines, I decided to buy one. I compared it and I AM REALLY HAPPY because now I can say I really own a REAL guitar. This guitar amazed me because of its very good sound, amplified by the solid top! I really recommend this guitar! For its price, you won't get wrong! I won't buy laminates because it has a different sound. (Maybe you'll know that if you really play a guitar for over 5 years. I've heard hundreds of guitars and this yamaha FD01s passed the sound quality test!) JUST BUY THIS! You'll never regret purchasing this! :) THE BEST GUITAR! FOR A CHEAP PRICE! :) ... show more

  • Measurements and materials
Style: Guitar
Let’s look at some of the materials & measurements of the Yamaha FD01S. It has a solid spruce top (that means not laminate) that measures 3mm thick. The grain on my Yamaha FD01 measures11 grains per inch. A spruce top with 10 – 14 grains per inch is considered to be pretty good, while less than 10 is “lower grade” quality. Tonewoods are rated by tightness of grain, stiffness, and appearance (coloring, streaks, wavyness of grain). Please note, the sides and back of a (lower end) Taylor 110 model guitar are ply (laminate or “layered”.) of Sapele (wood) with Poplar sandwiched in between. The Yamaha FD01S sides & back are Nato (or Mora) ply/laminate. I don’t know what’s inside the layers. Both Sapele and Nato look like Mahogany, but Nato is harder than both, and is reddish-brown in color. A guitar manufacturer can get 8 times as much usable material from a log when it’s used as laminate. The neck is Nato too. The head is glued on to the neck with a scarf joint. The fretboard & bridge are Rosewood. The width of the nut measures 1 11/16 The width of the lower bout measures 15 ¾”, depth = 4 5/8”, body length = 20”, fret scale = 25 ½”. The braces of the "X" brace are narrow and tall with a peaked crest (like the top of a gable roof house). The saddle and nut on the Yamaha FD01S are made from a hard, white plastic that is somewhat brittle… you may want to replace them. The tuning machines are similar to Grover style, with enclosed backs. They're probably made by Shenzhen or Gotoh. The sound quality is much better than any laminate top guitar. ... show more

  • Wanted my first guitar
Style: Guitar
Just started learning guitar and wanted one that was atleast sorta of good quality but not too expensive. This is the beginner guitar you should go with 100%. It sounds well and its easy to handle. Only issue I ever had was with tuning but I'm pretty sure that's more to do with me versus the product. Highly recommended especially when on sale. ... show more

  • Well worth the money and the convenience buying from Amazon. Spoken by an experienced teacher
Style: Guitar
I have been a teacher for many years. I have like nine guitars most of them are higher end expensive guitars. I often get Yamaha guitars for beginners because the quality versus the price is awesome. So I purchased this one on Amazon and in the past I recommended music stores but I thought I would give it a shot. I knew which day it was going to come so I quickly brought it inside from the heat and left it in the box for a couple of hours to cool down slowly in the house. Then I opened the box to check it out. The wood was totally fine and of course I had to tune the strings but after I tuned it I played it for a little bit and it plays beautiful and sounds beautiful. I am amazed at the price and the fact that the convenience of buying on Amazon worked out well. Well worth the purchase for beginner or advanced. ... show more
