  • Best Transparent Compressor on the Market
I've tried 3 compressors now ranging from inexpensive to very expensive. The MXR Dynacomp, the Wampler Ego, and the SP. Compared to the Wampler Ego there is little difference in sound and compression, but I didn't like the Ego because there were too many controls and I just don't see the need for that much compressor control. The SP has 2 knobs, Volume and Blend, and it has a Hi, Lo, Mid switch. I keep mine on Mid with the Blend at 12 o'clock and the volume at unity. Compared to the MXR Dynacomp, the differences are night and day. The Dynacomp seems to color my sound bringing out the bass, and in a lot of ways this is great. The Dynacomp encriches a clean tone and can also give you a very good 70's tone with distortion. I keep both compressors on my board because I love what the Dynacomp does to a clean signal, but the SP plays so much more nicely with pedals whether they are in front of it or behind it. When the SP is behind an auto-wah it tames it. When the SP is in front of some distortion pedals, it improves them or alters them in good ways. The thing I like most about the SP compressor is how transparent it is. It is just utterly transparent while still compressing. There were several reviews when the SP Compressor first came out that called it the greatest compressor on the market and I totally agree. Xotic really nailed it on this one. One additional BEST THING about this compressor is the high frequency cut you can activate internally. Sick or your chords sounding harsh? Best thing ever on the planet. My favorite in addition to all the rest. ... show more

  • Don't lose your high volume tube sound when playing at low volumes by using this compressor
I love this pedal. I was told I would lose my playing dynamics and this would cover up my mistakes. Wrong. Maybe some compressors. But not this one. Keep it on low compression and the blend (how much compressed signal is mixed with dry/uncompressed signal) on mid to 3 oclock and you still have all of your dynamics as far as I can tell. I play a strat with a tube screamer and like the way you can play softly and it be clean or play the strings harder and get some distortion. I still get that. I mainly use this for allowing me to play at acceptable house levels without sacrificing the tone on my tube amp (with the added benefit of increased sustain). So I can push the tubes where the walls would normally be vibrating and turn the compressor on and comp volume down to say 8-9 oclock and I get 80-90db (safe for hearing) volume with as much distortion/break up as I need. Otherwise its like its barely there which is what I wanted (with added sustain and high volume tube sound at lower volume if that makes sense). If you want more tone coloration you can use the higher compression and also there are switches inside the box you can mess with and make it more country style (they affect the attack and release I think - haven't messed with them - sounds perfect for me out of the box). Bottom line: don't go cheap on your compressor unless you want to sound bad and lose your dynamics. This is the best I have researched for being transparent. ... show more

  • It's a little pricey, but you could do no better at any price point.
It's very stout, relatively quiet for a Compressor, and despite having only two knobs, the internal and external switches make it considerably more versatile than I ever would have imagined. I bought it looking for a simplified but fully-functional compressor with a blend knob. Before I was using a Boss CS-3. I won't say this pedal is 'better' than the CS-3 because I have a positive predisposition to it despite its quirks, but for someone looking for versatility and a professional studio-quality compression, this is you guy. Small profile, but heavy and well made. As I said, you might end up preferring a different compressor, but you could do no better than this one. I suspect I will be using it the rest of my life. ... show more

  • Easy to Use, Transparent to the Ear
For awhile, I didn't use a compression pedal. I felt I wanted to keep the edges and rely on working hard on my technique. I got this pedal on a friend's recommendation and wasn't that impressed. On a lark I picked it back up and spent some time with it...man was I surprised. After a little fiddling, I dialed in a transparent tone....and was able to add to the sound, without dimming highs or artificially pushing the lows. It seems, I will use a pedal going forward... ... show more

  • Excellent compressor
I also have a keeley 4 knob compressor but I'm preferring the Xotic pedal right now. The compression is more agressive than the keeley but I find it easier to dial in a good sound, especially using the blend knob, I like to retain some dynamics to my sound. The high/mid/low switch is great, I like it on mid or high, really makes the harmonics come out. There is more volume on tap as well, and I can see how it could also be used as a useful clean boost. The Keeley has a more dynamic and transparent sound but I also find it's noisier than the Xotic. The Xotic is a fraction of the price though and better overall value I think. ... show more

  • Xotic sp comp
Excellent. I went On/On/Off/On on the dip switches. Still compressed and good clarity playing distorted. I mostly play low output Humbuckers through British voiced amps at fairly high volume. It’ll still run with the back off, so set the thing where you like it at the factory setting, then play with the dip switches. Takes 10 minutes. You may get a less subtle effect, if that’s what your looking for. ... show more

  • A lot of sustain and a lot of electrical interference.
This pedal covers the full range of compression, from subtle to pump and to Dyna Comp. It can really create sustain and harmonics. Unfortunately, it is a different weird (though minor) problem everywhere I go. This thing is very susceptible to interference and hum. I also have a MXR custom shop comp and if I had room I'd have them both on the board for when the SP gets too weird. Trying to decide about keeping it. If I do I will have to learn a great deal about grounding and shielding scenes for pedalboards, but none of my other pedals have been this fussy. ... show more

  • Excellent sound and easy to use
Excellent sound and an easy to use compression pedal. A 3-way switch determines the amount of compression: low, medium, high. Use the blend control to get the perfect amount of attack (dry signal) mixed with sustain (wet signal). I have a Wampler EGO which is also a great pedal but the SP is just so simple to use, sounds great, and fits my small pedal board more easily with room to spare. I just leave it on most of the time for my style of playing. ... show more
