  • Quite usable small compressor pedal for the money
Color: Compressor
I was in search of a small compressor pedal to put at the beginning of my chain, and I thought I'd give this VSN Comp pedal a shot since it fit the bill in terms of size and cost. It's a generic Chinese mass produced pedal and no doubt is produced in the same factory with the same PCB, parts and build quality as those branded by Donner, Rowin, Amizik, Clefly, Koogo, etc... I chose this one because I liked the aesthetic of the enclosure, but I'm sure it's no different than any of the other compressor pedals with the same layout in enclosures with the other aforementioned brands on them. Based on the layout of the controls of the pedal (and its counterparts), I'm led to believe that it is a clone of the old Boss CS-1 Compression Sustainer from the late 70s/early 80s. I cannot confirm this, however, but I do know it is definitely NOT in the same family as the Mooer Yellow Comp (which is a clone of the Diamond Comp) due to the addition of the Treble switch in this case. Upon opening the box, I found that the pedal is quite sleek and nice-looking. The enclosure is a solid metal material, and there is a nice rubber pad on the bottom to reduce friction - minimizing the need for velcro if you don't want to put any on. I did notice fairly quickly, however, that the nuts that hold all the jacks and switches were slightly loose, but I was able to tighten them easily with just my fingers. The directions it comes with are not very useful and redundantly describe pretty much everything about the pedal that is already self-explanatory, in no further detail. As for the functionality of the pedal itself, it ranges from very subtle to medium compression. I have definitely played compressor pedals that have higher compression and have better "squish" and "squeeze" when turning up the comp/sustain knob. This VSN Comp pedal has its most usable range with the Comp knob turned up 75%-100%. As with other compressor pedals, the more you turn up the Comp level, the louder it gets, so you can adjust the Level knob to achieve higher compression at lower volumes. For reference, I found that unity gain is at around 7 o'clock (10% turn) with the Comp turned all the way up. The tone knob is usable and can definitely make your signal brighter but not much darker than your dry/clean signal. There is also a Treble switch at the top of the pedal. Mine may be either wired or labeled in reverse because the signal is brighter in the "Up" position and normal in the "Down" position (which is what I found more preferable). I did not find the pedal very "noisy" as is common with many compression pedals, particularly Ross/Dyna Comp clones, so that is a big plus. In terms of build quality, you do get what you pay for and your expectations should be realistic, but the pedal is definitely very usable. In addition to all the nuts on the pedal being loose, my pedal arrived with a slightly scratchy Comp knob pot. As I turn it up or down (or push down on it with any amount of pressure), it very briefly cuts out the effect at certain settings but usually works fine at whatever setting I arrive on. As I have limited space on my board, this pedal will likely be quite serviceable for me for the immediate future. For a small compressor pedal in this price range, I would definitely recommend this VSN Comp. Only if you have a higher budget and want a higher quality small sized comp, maybe look more at the Mooer, Wampler, or Xotic. ... show more

  • Nice analog delay with modulated repeats. Very small!
Color: Mini Delay
Your browser does not support HTML5 video. Nice and small analog delay with a switch for standard repeats and modulated repeats. Modulated repeats sound very nice. Delay is crisp and clean. Very small pedal great for crowded boards. Only criticism is how well the small knobs might hold up to gigging. Fantastic for home and studio use. ... show more

  • Nice to have
It does the job and it's able to be seen in the dark. The true bypass is great.

  • Not a very good tuner tbh
Bought this tuner to use on a Pedaltrain Nano + rig I had put together. The size was what I needed, but the tuner itself just isn't very good. The accuracy was pretty far off. It would show you were in tune even when you weren't, my headstock tuner gave a flat or sharp reading and this tuner was saying it was in tune. Also, the biggest issue is that when you have this tuner on it's supposed to mute the dry signal and there's some bleed thru. It also makes a popping sound through your amp everytime you tune. It's cheap, but in this case you get what you pay for. ... show more

  • You get what you pay for......low price = low sound quality
Color: Compressor
I bought this unit for my bass guitar pedal board as I did not want to spend a lot of money on a compressor. I did spend money on a good Ampeg Classic preamp and the Tech 21 YYZ preamp as well and they are both high quality and great sounding. The VSN compressor is the weak link in my signal chain. As the compression ratio is increased, the noise level goes up as well. Too noisy for my needs, but you get what you pay for. The “normal” switch position is a flat response where the “treble”position is bright. Not a versatile compressor pedal at all. If you only need minimal compression and don’t mind losing your “low end” in the process, this might work for you. I can use it as a backup unit, but I just purchased a Keely Compressor at $130.00 and I would suggest spending at least that much for a quality compressor pedal. Spend your money on a good preamp, EQ and compressor and less on your effects pedals. Effects can degrade your tone but your core tone is essential before being processed by effects. ... show more

  • Perfect, Clean Boost. But requires it's own external DC powers
Color: Booster
The Good: Boost allows you to give a little kick up in the volume...from inline effects. Place this in-line out for clean boost . Note: This is not a distortion check out some the other flavors of sounds from same manufacture. * Don't forget buy a DC Adapter 9 v standard pedal polarity for this. The Bad: Pedal has no space in it for a simple 9 volt battery . No way! Yes Way! . Just a deeper case and a 9 volt would if fit so all these pedals will need dc adapter or 2.5mm plug to battery snapper or rechargable guitar power pack. Works as Stated good for a pedal board set up only but I plan on 9 volt with cable to plug I need battery powered set up other pedals I have all got own 9 volt source. ... show more

  • Does the job
Color: Tremolo
It turns the volume on and off at adjustable depth and speeds. In other words, it works perfectly. I don't know why some tremolo pedals cost so much for such a simple effect. Seems sturdy and well built for the price, too.

  • Tiny Little Analog Delay with Big Sound
Color: Mini Delay
Your browser does not support HTML5 video. I have a digital delay, but I really missed my old Boss analog delay that I had through the early '80s. This little thing takes up hardly any room on the board, but it gives that classic analog sound that changes as it decays. It's heavy and sturdy metal like the old Boss stuff. I think you're better off with something tough and metal like this rather than a Behringer clone with a plastic housing. I hope the sound didn't downsample on the video. I had to get it off Google photos, and all I have to listen to it on is this laptop, so I hope you can hear the clarity when it is on clean with no dirt pedal. Anyway, you should be able to get a feel for it from this. If you're worried about buying a pedal this inexpensive, don't worry. I bought a VSN pedal recently and was so impressed I started buying more of their stuff and haven't been disappointed yet. I've got like three VSN pedals now plus their power supply. ... show more
