I took a chance on a new product and I highly recommend this product. I’m a very experienced DIY’er for context. I had 8 custom-made white oak treads to cut down and I wanted them to fit perfectly. This tool did the trick. Took just a bit of time to get the right pieces put together to get the approximate width. Then the fun began. Basically loosen 8 knobs, 3 on each side to get the corner angles perfectly. Then made sure the width is perfect and tighten the last two knobs. My stairs turned out perfect and I notice every little flaw in my work. Was tougher to get the angle of the mitre saw perfect than use this tool.

I took a chance on this and it worked to do my stairs just fine. The end angles are very secure when set. The middle will flex as it’s flat aluminum but it’s lays flat on your surface to scribe the board

The struggle is real when you are a father of five boys and four pets managing a busy home remodel during the afternoon chaos, and having an exact 10.1" to 56.3" adjustable length span is a major relief for letting me capture tricky, uneven wall angles in one shot without wasting expensive lumber. Being a DIYer who handles all the carpentry, flooring, and cabinet building for our household of seven, I realized this precision gauge is a substantial help for getting flawless cuts on stair risers and shelving units alike. I have used it for a while now around the property, and the clear scale markings combined with the rigid stabilizing bars are a win-win for expanding my workshop capabilities during my daily routine. It is easier to manage the large family reality when you have professional-grade layout tools that prevent costly measuring mistakes, allowing me to wrap up my building projects quickly before heading out to a Scout event with the kids or tackling the morning chaos. In daily use I found that the locking knobs tighten effortlessly and the blue anodized finish looks sharp on my man cave workbench while resisting scratches from regular shop abuse. My only real grievance is that I finally sat down to trim out a new set of basement steps but had to battle some seriously over-engineered packaging before I could even set my first angle. Great layout tool for the price. It is not as sturdy as the name brand but it is a lot cheaper than they are and gets the job done just as well. Can be used for stair treads or even floor layouts when installing flooring in a room/hall with angles. Once assembled, simply loosen the knobs on the bolts, adjust the angles to match the first wall, extend the center bars out and align the second angle to the second wall. Lock your knobs back down on the bolts and place the layout tool on your stair tread (or if for a floor layouts lock pieces together, flip them over and mark out ur angles in the back of the flooring). Cut out the waste material and install the applicable floor or treads. The tool comes in a nice zippered case, utilizing hook and loop and elastic to store the aluminum portions of the tool. There is a sewn in zippered pouch inside to store the hardware for the tool. Once broke down, easier stores away on a shelf or in the truck. Fully extended with all bars, mine measured out to 63 7/8” peak. With a single short bar, it measured out to 10 3/16” at its smallest capacity. It does get a little cumbersome picking the tool up and moving it to your material when fully extended so I would recommend having your material in location to have minimal distance to travel if using over about 40” in length to ensure best potential for accuracy. Checking most common angles on the miter gauge with a few known accurate tools (t-square, protractor, digital angle finder) the miter was incredibly close. For carpentry work, it is more than accurate. Fine furniture, well, probably still accurate enough. Overall, for the price of this layout tool, if you are a diy, handyman, or contractor doing flooring or stair treads, this is a great option. Thinking outside the box, I’m sure there is even more versatility in this tool.

This is a surprisingly capable little layout kit. Its biggest strength is flexibility: the center arm can be configured anywhere from roughly 10 inches up to about 56 inches, and everything packs neatly into the included case, which even has a mesh pouch for the bolts and knobs. As a general-purpose layout tool, it offers more than the “tread template” label suggests. The wings include measurement and angle markings, and in my testing both the linear measurements and several angle checks were accurate. Where the design shows its limits is in stair‑tread work. Because the system relies on multiple bars linked together to reach wider spans—say, a 48‑inch tread—the assembly becomes floppy and awkward to transfer cleanly to your workpiece. There’s also no mechanism (pins, stops, or alignment tabs) to register the tool against the front edge of the step, which makes precise tread fitting more difficult. In that sense, there’s really no comparison between this and a professional‑grade tool like the SST tread gauge. That said, this kit is about $37, while an SST setup is well over $100. For a DIYer tackling a one‑off stair project, it can get the job done with some patience. And outside of stair work, its compact storage, wide adjustability, and ability to handle smaller jobs make it genuinely useful—for example, laying out shelves for built‑ins or bookcases with reasonable accuracy. Overall, it’s not a pro‑level tread tool, but it is a versatile, accurate, and affordable layout kit with real value beyond its advertised purpose.

I'm a DIYer and a couple of years ago, I refinished my basement and put in new stair treads. I quickly learned that my stair well walls were not parallel, and I ended up building my own template for measuring the angles of the ends of the treads. My home made jig was not perfect and I botched a stair tread - and when you do that it's not a cheap fix. If I had had a template like this tread template from Workpro, I would not have messed up. It stretches out to 165", and the end brackets pivot to allow you to match the exact angles needed. Then you lift it up, place it on your stair tread, and trace the angles. No measuring needed - which makes this process so much easier! The quality of this kit is fantastic! The aluminum stretchers are held in place in the case by elastic and velcro. The nuts and bolts stay in a zippered bag - which is sewn in place! No chance of accidentally leaving your nuts and bolts behind on a job site! Everything folds nicely into a sturdy case with a zipper - no trying to stuff everything in - everything fits nicely! If you're going to take on replacing your own stair treads, I highly recommend getting this jig!

This template tool made fitting stair treads and flooring around angled walls much easier. Simply adjust it to match the space, lock it down, and trace your cut lines—no complicated measuring required. It's not as heavy-duty as some premium brands, but it works just as well for a much lower price. The included storage case is also well designed, with dedicated spots for all the parts and hardware.
