  • Ok for small miters Ok for small miters
When I first opened these I immediately thought they were going to be of limited utility given their small size and the fact that they depend on a spring rather than screws to do the clamping. And in terms of real woodworking I was right. But after giving them a try with some small miters I can see how some people would find them perfectly adequate. They are pretty well made from all plastic except for a fairly stiff spring. The clamping wedge slides smoothly in and out as well as having some side-to-side travel. This is useful if you have two different thicknesses of materials you’re trying to join. Speaking of thicknesses, you’re limited to ¾” max. And apparently there’s a minimum of 3/16” below which the spring isn’t going to do much. And therein lies the basic issue. With a screw-type clamp you can go to zero or max width with as much force as you want. But screw-type clamps clock in at a minimum of double what these run so there’s always a trade-off. Not sure why they claim one-handed operation because you have to apply force to the spring while wrangling the frame pieces into place in the jaws. I guess if the workpieces are already positioned and clamped on the bench then it’s one-handed to get these clamps onto them. Besides miters you can also join pieces in a ‘T’ configuration as with most corner clamps. All in all these are ok for what they are, economical small clamps for small jobs. So while I do believe you can never have too many clamps and that you need them in all sizes, if you do a lot of frame making or cabinetry you’ll want to invest your dollars (more of them) in some serious screw-type clamps and leave these to the casual crafter. ... show more
