They're blocks, kids love them. They aren't consistently sized, so, they've got to use their little noggins in order to build towers and stuff out of them. They are reasonably square and stackable, which is a fair consolation, being that they are kids and all, can't make it too difficult. Also, they aren't bright colors, they're wood, so if you're not a fan of MAXIMUM SENSORY OVERDRIVE toys like I am, these fit the bill well. The title of the item tells you what you need to know: It's a 5-pound box of wooden blocks. Three different types of hardwood, and various sizes. Some of the pieces were a little roughly cut, but a bit of sanding fixes that problem. I am using these for learning how to carve and whittle pieces of wood, so they're just about perfect. Some people have mentioned not getting the bag shown in the pictures. If/when you buy this check underneath the flaps of the cardboard at the bottom of the box, mine slipped underneath them and blended in with the cardboard. I needed to get some small pieces of wood to try out on my small CNC machine, and these looked great in the picture. The only issue is that all these pieces are SMALL. The largest piece that came in my box was 3 1/4" x 3", the smallest one 2" x 1 3/8". For testing different hardwoods with different bits, they'll work OK for some smaller designs. But, keep in mind if you are looking for larger pieces for a project or such, you may need to look elsewhere. ... show more

Real hardwood, it’s great for carving! The variety and different sizes make for the imagination. These are fun for carving trinkets as well. Key chains etc. And knife handles for those steak knives and food functioning tools. Research the type of wood and you can see which wood type, ie walnut, maple, oak or whatever you received. To make one smooth nice experience for dinner, a comfortable knife with the handle you carved may be an experience. :) ... show more

I purchased two separate offerings of scrap hardwood in my effort to restore some old tools and needed some stock for handles. This was more along the line of play blocks for youngsters...in my opinion. I will say that the little blocks of wood are nice quality hardwood but had little that I could actually use in my projects. ... show more

This was exactly what I needed for a classroom project. We needed to make an item for a school silent auction. I used a little over half of the blocks and arranged it into a cross and had the kids write a Bible verse on each block. The blocks were a variety of colors and sizes. These did come the size that was described. Many other reviews complained about the size, but if people would read, then they'd know they're not big chunks. They seem perfect for what I want to use them for. I will say that there are a couple softer pieces in this bundle, which I can mark with my nail.
