First off, I do a fair amount of carving as a hobby, and I have some really nice thin-blade carving knives--and they are also really expensive. This set really astounded me with the number of knives and chisels for such a reasonable price--I honestly had low expectations, and was very surprised and impressed when I started using them. The knives have thicker blades than my "professional set", but they are well shaped on both sides of the blade. The grips are very comfortable and fit my hand just as easily as my other set. The added gloves are a really nice addition to the set, though they do not fit my hand. I'd say the gloves are a medium (that does stretch some), but I'm typically an XL glove size. But they do work well for my kids, and wearing protection when using carving knives is essential (in my opinion). The leather storage bag is very nice and well thought out, made, and really good quality--I was seriously expecting the cheap plastic leatherette. I think it's real leather, but if not, it feels pretty close to real leather with a soft interior liner. The blades are also really sharp and create glassy smooth cuts. In a world where most products over promise and under deliver, where the photos are grossly exaggerated and misleading, and everyone is producing cheaper garbage--this REALLY stands out as a great product at a great value--and I don't say that lightly or very often.

The carving set looks great, but the case is definitely some fake leatherette. I wish they wouldn’t miss advertise. I think it will be fine for our grandson for Christmas, but I’m sure it’s not professional quality. A true review will have to wait until he actually uses it. I wish Amazon would ask for reviews a few months after purchase. Then it would be a true review.

I have wanted to try whittling and this set seemed like a good price. It comes with a variety of tools. This allows me to try to figure out what works best for me. I am still getting used to it but the knives seem sharp and work well.

I've never whittled anything other than a sharp point on a stick but the hobby has always attracted me, so I decided to get this kit so that someday, when I have the time, I'll have the tools necessary. I also have plans to make some homemade rustic furniture and this set of tools will help me make it much more intricate and impressive. The tools are extremely sharp, the handles are fairly easy to hold - even with my big hands - and the leather case is soft, flexible, and great looking. If you know someone who wittles or might like to, this would certainly make a fantastic gift. Should these tools stand a test of time then they certainly deserve five stars but I only gave them four because only time will tell.

I have been wanting to learn to whittle for many years. As sharp as I keep my pocket knives, I have been disappointed when trying to carve with them. This kit has such a nice variety of cutting tools that I felt sure I would be able to do better using proper carving tools. It arrived in August, but I was working outside late into the evenings. Now it is dark at seven and I am sitting down to watch television with the family early enough to have time for some whittling. Watching some how to videos, I learned that skilled carvers don't use just any wood and ordered some good carving wood. The tools are so sharp that I managed to cut a finger unwrapping them. I am pleased with how much control I have over my cuts with these tools cutting the softer wood that I bought. I haven't produced anything nice enough to be worthy of photographing yet, but I am enjoying it and getting more confident day by day. I like this kit.
