  • Effective Tool for Carving or Rough Shaping Wood
Style: 4-1/2'' x 7/8'' Arbor
This review is for Wood Carving Disc 4.5 Inch,Wood Stump Grinder,Angle Grinding Wheel with 7/8”Arbor for Wood Carving, Shaping, Working,Tree Stump Remover This is a standard form factor 4.5" wheel with a 7/8 center bore. It has a very rough surface that wraps around the edge. I mounted this on a pneumatic angle grinder. Because the center bore has a thinner cross section than most wheels I use, I had to flip the arbor mandrels to tightly grip the wheel. Be very sure the wheel is centered and tightly retained by the mandrels, because this wheel has some significant rotating mass. I used the wheel of a block of Douglas Fir and was able to grind away large amounts of wood quickly. This wheel make a lot of sawdust in a short time. I then tried some intricate shaping of the surface and found it to be very controllable by modulating the air valve on the grinder. It was actually kind of fun to make some patterns in the wood block. While you won't get any fine detail because of the wheels aggressive surface, you can still get remarkable results with a little practice. I did not feel that the wheel was uncontrollable at any time and never needed to touch the side handle of the grinder. A few notes: Do not grind anything but wood. Any contact with metal or stone will quickly damage the grinding surface. Very wet wood may not grind well as the wood fibers are quite stringy and do not come off cleanly. A variable speed grinder will make using this much easier and more controllable. If you are going to use this on a stump, dig out around the stump to get clearance for the grinding operation, then wash off the stump and let it dry before grinding. Keeping the soil off the wood being ground will improve the life of the tool. Overall, this is a very handy grinding wheel for wood and can achieve some remarkable results. I will be using it for rough shaping and also for cleaning up a couple of stumps on the property. ... show more

  • Aggressive carving wheel
Style: 4-1/2'' x 7/8'' Arbor
I tested this using a Ryobi 18V grinder with a 5/8" arbor. So this disc didn't fit my Ryobi 18V 4.5" grinder that has a 5/8" arbor without the use of an included adaptor. The steel teeth versus carbide teeth is why I give it 4 stars not 5. This is an aggressive quick cutting disc. It's intended to do rough carving of wood forms and it does that well. I used it to shape a nut bowl from hard mango wood. Then I rough formed a cedar bowl. It ripped through both these pieces and was still sharp after about 90 minutes of actual use. Warning: Wear protective gear when doing this kind of work. The disc throws sawdust everywhere. I'm used to this and wear both goggles and a clear visor shield over the goggles. Irritating but keeps my eyes clean. I also wear a quality paint respirator and regularly change my filters when carving. I wear tough gloves too, although I'm an old school carpenter and have never worn gloves except when working in freezing weather. But for this type of carving where the wheel is very grabby I want full protection. Fear of a blade I'm using possibly exploding from the strain has also led me to use a heavy leather shop apron for my rough carving. And I wear tough leather boots with steel toes. All because I saw what damage an exploding blade at 10,000 rpm can do to user. The local big box hardware store sells a similar carbide tipped carving disc for $65 so I think this disc is a bargain even though it will not last as long as a carbide tipped disc. ... show more

  • fast-working disc
Style: 4-1/2'' x 7/8'' Arbor
Ordered this disc to shape some large limbs recently cut off a white oak. Here's what I thought: 1. The grinding disc you receive, with a ring to convert the arbor size to 5/8", is heavy metal but not carbide. Therefore, it will last a while but not as long as a carbide disc. 2. The surface of the disc, curved with curved edges, is rough and sharp. It works well and aggressively removes wood 3. My grinder is variable speed and I used the lowest speed (4,000 rpm) with a handle to make sure I had control of the disc. There were no issues and I was able to control the grinder for reasonably semi-fine cuts. I suspect at high speeds this heavy disc would be less controllable but that is just speculation. In sum, this disc is fast-working and sharp and it makes an easy job of first (and even second-level) shaping. Recommended. ... show more
