Description

This Wixey kit can be adapted to a number of woodworking machines and was specifically made for large stationary planers and sanders. It has a remote display connected with a standard 6 ft. Cat 5E cord that can be disconnected for easy installation and access. Powered by standard AAA batteries this readout provides up to 2 years battery life. The WR550 has a resolution of .005”, 1/32”, or 0.1 mm along with an accuracy and repeatability of 0.002” or 0.1mm. Like other Wixey linear measuring devices it utilizes the patented “Precise Fraction Technology” which gives the displayed fractions an accuracy of 1/500” The measuring range is 12”. Update - email support was prompt and helpful. We diagnosed and determined I had a faulty component. A few days later replacement parts were in my mailbox and it is again working perfectly and precisely. Thank you! Used on Jet 15" HH planer (not that the planer model really matters) - worked great for a month or two, now no longer works. No phone number to call, so I've left an email for support. Will update my review based on how that goes. Basically when I put batteries in the unit, all digits on the LCD light up. I can turn it off, then back on again, and it comes up to some random number in MM. When I press and hold On/Off to calibrate, it goes to 0.00 as one would expect, but then it locks up hard. You cannot turn it off/on, change from MM to Inches, etc. I've tried multiple resets and this is the result every time. Pretty frustrating. I've read their FAQs, etc but nothing seems to cover this particular issue. Hopefully they can help me resolve and I will bump this rating to a 4 or 5 star after a little more usage. ... show more

I installed this on my Jet 20 inch planer - it took some cutting to fit around some of the stock bolts but overall the installation was pretty straightforward - theres some good videos on YT that go over in detail the installation for Jet/Powermatic Planers. I absolutely love the accuracy the convenience of reading the thickness vs relying on the old school rulers. I tested it against my Calipers and it was dead on. Once you get it installed, you'll realize they should install these stock on all those bigger machines. It definitely impressed me and will continue to install these on future wood working machines ... show more

There's repeatability, and there's accuracy. In woodworking, repeatability is king. The display jumps on 0.005" steps. I *know* the repeatability is better that that. It was dumbed down to guarantee accuracy. Wish they hadn't done that. On installation - spend the extra 30 minutes to an hour carefully figuring out where and how to mount it. DO NOT overtighten the screws after drilling the castings on your machine with the included bit. You *will* strip them, and have to use an oversized screw. On use - enjoy this thing! It's a huge time-saver, eliminating test cuts and machine time. It is well worth the money to buy it, and the time to install it. You'll not regret it! [I see Quincy managed to get in the picture. I've had this about a year now and it's now a tool I could never live without. It's very accurate and it's stayed that way since I initially calibrated it. I no longer need to rely on calipers to get to the measurement I need. I mounted it inside the cabinet of my Powermatic 15" planer as I didn't want to risk it getting knocked and having to recalibrate it. It was somewhat of a challenge to mount internally but it was well worth it with a nice clean end result. Highly recommend! ... show more

    • Excellent customer service, great product
I purchased and installed the Wixey WR550 on a new ShopFox W1873 15" planer. The WR550 came within a couple days and was packaged very well to eliminate shipping damage. The installation instructions were pretty clear and straight forward. After finishing the installation I proceeded to calibrate the unit according to the instructions. As soon as I turned the unit on it didn't act right. Nothing I tried worked and after about an hour I fired off an email to Wixey's tech support (would have been nice to have a phone number to call) and within a couple hours I received a reply, from Barry Wixey, requesting pics of my installation. I was away from the house until late in the evening and as soon as I got home I took pics and sent them off. This was a Friday evening, but mid-day Saturday I received a reply from Barry explaining what I had done wrong and how to rectify the issue. 15 minutes later I was in business and the unit calibrated right away. I haven't used the unit to the extent that I can comment on its durability but I can say that the company has EXCELLENT customer service and I really appreciated that they helped out on a weekend. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this product and company to anyone who needs to be able to accurately and repeatedly measure thickness or depth of an item. ... show more
