  • Comparison of 4 earphones for running
I have a lot of reviews I haven’t written yet, but since I’m buying earphones for a gift, and since I purchased some for my daughter, I’m sharing this review here and also in the other product pages (maybe it’ll help somebody). My daughter wanted earphones for her daily running, with these features: 1. Didn’t fall out 2. Clear calls 3. Bluetooth not cutting off while running (she has an iPhone) 4. Option for allowing ambient noise (for safety, she runs outside) 5. Faithful bass, not “boosted”. My grownup kids play instruments and prefer the closest sound to the original recording (that’s why we also have the Sony MDR7506 Professional} So I purchased four for running, waterproof, with (pro) reviews that also said they didn’t have “high-range”, tinny or high trebled sound. The high range is the first to go as we age. For the tests: A good acoustic seal provides maximum bass and the true sound of any earphones for assessment. The earphones need to be well plugged in your ears (I usually wear one large sleeve in one ear, and one medium sleeve in my narrower ear, in order to get the perfect seal). My daughter tested these while running (I did too, without running LOL): - Kept (her favorite) => Earfun Free Pro => 1 (didn’t fall, most comfortable) – 2 (great) – 3 (great) – 4 (great, note she didn’t test the active noise cancellation mode) – 5 (bass a little boosted, but great sound) https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B08LYXGB89 - Kept as a backup (she loses everything) => Tozo T10 => 1 (great) – 2 (great) – 3 (great) – 4 (great) – 5 (faithful bass, high and mids) https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07J2Z5DBM - Not kept => Anker Soundcore Life Dot 2 => 1 (fell off, bunky) – 2 (great) – 3 (great) – 4 (no option) – 5 (boosted bass, softer highs and mids) https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B086MZ9HQT - Kept by me, not her => Back Bay Runner Wireless => 1 (didn’t fall off and the chord didn’t bother her, but she didn’t like the style) – 2 (great) – 3 (great) 4 (great) - 5 (little bass, but faithful highs and mids) https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07KVMH6SW Other info : - All were loud, though loudness was not considered (we avoid loudness whenever we can to stall hearing loss). - We also tested calls at home between the first and second floor of our house, for Bluetooth connection and voice clarity, and all passed the test. - Their battery of all lasted at least from the time she left for work and came back late in the afternoon. ... show more

  • Outstanding and cheaper alternative to Airpods
I once tried a pair of regular AirPods, but they would never stay in my ears. My son convinced me to try a new pair of AirPod Pros so I ordered those, and while they were a little better, they still tended to pop out over time, often at the most inconvenient times. I started pouring over reviews of alternative Bluetooth Earbuds that had hooks. And when I say poured, I mean poured. I probably spent a total of 8 hours reading user reviews, watching YouTube reviews, studying specs and features, examining charging case sizes, battery life, you name it. I finally settled on these EarFun Free Pro 4's. I liked their size, the small charging case, the battery life. Of course, I had my doubts as to whether they would actually work well and fit my ears well, especially given that I was paying $49 instead of well over 3 times that number for the AirPod Pros. But the generally positive user reviews and features of the Earbuds prompted me to take the plunge. And am I glad I did! All things considered, I'm extremely happy with my EarFun earbuds. Right out of the box, they were fully charged, which was a nice touch. I put them in my ears as is, and they felt pretty good. I successfully paired them with my iPhone, my iPod, and the Bluetooth Transmitter/Receiver I recently purchased from Amazon so I could watch TV over Bluetooth (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B098QGXRHF/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). All 3 devices paired with little fuss. I made a few test calls. I could hear my recipients, and they could hear me, loud and clear. I'm a little hearing impaired so I had to set the EarFuns to max volume. I would have loved a little more volume, but, hey, that's my problem. If necessary, I asked the folks I was speaking to to speak up a bit. It probably wouldn't work for me in a noisy environment, but time will tell. I then sat down and watched TV for a couple hours. The transmitter and the buds worked exceedingly well. Again, I had to turn the volume to the absolute max, but I could hear the TV, the rest of my family wasn't bothered by the sound, and the minimal lag was very tolerable. (I set the earbuds to low latency.) Maybe the next set of EarFuns will have aptX built-in for near zero latency. At the end of the few hours of testing, the earbuds were still securely in my ears though not the most comfortable. Next day, I replaced the tips and hooks with the smallest tips and hooks that came in the set, and these are perfect for me. I barely know they're in my ears, no pinching no tightness. Couldn't be happier. SOUND: 4/5. Like I said, I'm a little hard of hearing so more volume would always be a good thing. NOISE CANCELLATION: I haven't used this much yet. I won't really know just how important it is until I've used it over time. But chances are, this won't matter much to me. Most of the time, I'll be wearing my hearing aids so with those in and my EarFuns also in place, my hearing aids are probably going to be the dominant factor when it comes to noise reduction. And, of course, my hearing aids won't increase the EarFun volume at all because of the way they're situated. I tried Normal, Noise Cancellation, and Ambient Sound but neither had much of an effect. I will say, though, that when listening to music or a podcast, there's PLENTY OF VOLUME. It's only on phone calls when watching with my Bluetooth transmitter that I could use the additional volume. I wonder though, will the noise cancellation also apply to what the person hears at the other end of the line when I'm on the phone? That would be nice if the mics filter out some of the noise around me to benefit the person I'm speaking to. I'll have to try and test that out and see what happens. BATTERY LIFE: 5. Superb! Used these for 4 hours at least and the charging case shows green and the earbuds are still going strong. One of the questions I had asked prior to purchase was how do I know what's happening when I tap the different earbuds in different ways? Simple: Audio feedback. For example, if I triple tap the left earbud, I hear "Normal." If I triple tap again, I hear "Noise Cancelling." Another triple tap, and I hear "Ambient sound." Once more, and I'm back to "Normal." Another question I and others asked, is there any way to know how much charge is left on the earbuds when they're in your ears? Everyone said in reply to that question, no, there is not. But that's not correct. I can't speak for Android, but if you own an iPhone or an iPad, you can use the various battery widgets available to monitor how much battery life is left on the earbuds. Right now, after about 3-1/2 hours of use, I'm looking at 45% battery remaining which sounds to be just about what I'd expect. One other minor drawback. Clearly, these aren't AirPods so you don't get all the bells and whistles you get when you're using real AirPods with Apple devices. When I had to connect my EarFuns to my phone this morning, I had to go to Settings and then Bluetooth and even though I had paired the EarFuns yesterday, they were no longer on the list of available devices. I wondered why. So I tapped and held both buds for 3 seconds to enter pairing mode, repaired them to my phone. And then tapped EarFun Free Pro to connect them. Not sure if this will be a persistent issue, but it's fine if it's something I have to get used to. After 2 days, I am super happy with my purchase. Thank you EarFun for a terrific and well priced product. You can't beat $49. App Support and aptX would be nice on your next Pro model. And some more volume please. Everything else is GREAT! FOLLOW-UP--3 MONTHS LATER Well, I have to say that the luster has dimmed. Problem 1: I was using the EarFuns with both my transmitter and iPad. More often than not, when I switch from one device to the other, I have to re-pair the Earbuds...and many times I can’t even get them to enter pairing mode in which case, I have to return them to the case, sometimes hold their buttons down for 5 seconds to clear their memory, and only then can I remove them and re-pair them. Big hassle if you want to use these with more than one device. Problem 2: The hooks stretch in no time, and once stretched, they pretty much stop working well. Not only that, but if they move out of alignment just a little bit, when you return the Earbuds to the case, the case won’t close properly, which requires that you remove them, rotate the hooks a bit, and try again. If you’re wearing your Earbuds at night in the dark, trying to do this without any light is an impossible task. Sadly, I’m back at square one in search of the optimal Earbuds for me. ... show more
