  • Capable, fast, amazing kayak
I started out with a 8 foot recreational sit on top kayak and wanted to upgrade to a more capable sea kayak. I was lucky to find one available as there seems to be a shortage of kayaks everywhere. It arrived very poorly packaged only half wrapped . It had a gouge out of the bow from shipping. Due to the near impossibility of finding another ill keep it. I took it out for a maiden voyage and it handles like a dream. Its very fast, stable and easy to control . the skeg system is easy to use. I cant wait to go on some serious adventures with my new kayak. ... show more

  • Might not be the best boat for a newbie.
I was last in a Tempest 165 50 pounds ago. It still fits my height very well but not my width and weight. It is not easy to move around without help out on the water it is certainly not sluggish. Not sure how much initial stability it has. I would not recommend it for the faint of heart. The hatches are not the height of great design. I suspect they are cost effective for the manufacturer. I may just be a grumpy old man who is not as limber or strong as in years long gone. I am also comparing it to skin on frame kayaks I have built which weigh half as much. Problem with them is that they do not have bulkheads which makes emptying them after getting wet more difficult. The boat is regarded as a classic and certainly is a better fit for a smaller paddler. ... show more

  • Somewhat on the heavy side for solo roof racking.
Weight is normal for this size kayak but alot of effort to load alone, especially at the end of a long paddle. However, the boat more than makes up for this when in the water. Once underway and in its natural element the boat is one of the best handling, best tracking, easiest to paddle boats of any composition that you can own. It also comes with the most comfortable seat padding that I've encountered. The padding is of a thin design but it works. Even after hours of paddling I'm still comfortable. It distributes body weight surprisingly well. Since there's a modest amount of rocker built into the hull design the Tempest hits a good balance between solid tracking and turning ability. Noticeably better than several boats that I've owned of this length. One caveat would be that the narrowness of the beam (21.5 in.) requires some degree of previous experience and I wouldn't recommend it for a novice, but, someone with a moderate degree of skill will be able to adjust to the stability difference after a short amount of time if coming from a somewhat wider, more initially stable boat. Once you're dialed in with that you'll begin to enjoy the boat the more you use it without giving it a second thought. Letting yourself roll up and over 2-4 ft. waves broadside will show you the comfort and confidence you can have with it. Just make sure you have a good neoprene spray skirt when you do since the boat follows a Euro design pattern and sits close to the water line. The skeg works well at about 1/2 -2/3 depth in a side wind and only rarely needs to be let out more, which minimizes drag. In the water I'd give the Tempest 5 stars and only docked one star due to the effort level of loading and unloading from a car rack. Then again I'm not the most robust 5'8" paddler on the planet or the most youthful. Results may vary. ... show more
