  • Works well
Set name: 8 Sounds
Nice little noise machine. I wish it had more "fan" sounding options but for the price it works well!

  • My Son Sleeps Better Because of This Sound Machine!
Set name: 6 Sounds
Since the time our twins were babies, they slept in the same room. We used a music player and bought some "white noise" music so our kids could listen to some soothing sounds to help them sleep. After our twins got their own rooms, we didn't have another music player so one of our kids didn't have any soothing sounds for a little while. A couple months ago, my son said his room was too quiet so I just happened to find this sound machine really quickly. It was a great price and it seemed to be just what we were looking for so we ordered it. This sound machine is a great option if you simply want a sound machine for someone's bedroom or you want one to use for travel. You can even use it for both options! The actual machine is small and compact so it doesn't take up a lot of space. It measures 4 3/8 inches long, 4 inches deep, and 2 1/2 inches high. It's white and the front of the machine is the speaker so it projects a good amount of sound. There are six sound settings: rain, brook, thunder, white noise (aka static), ocean, and summer night. There are also buttons for power, timers (15, 30, and 60 minutes), and volume up and down. There are two options for the power source. You can either use the included AC adaptor or three AA batteries, the latter of which are not included. This machine is made in China. My son was so excited when this arrived! We just opened the box, took it straight to his room, plugged it in, and started testing it out. He's almost five so it's really easy for him to use because he can press the buttons himself and he knows how to use the volume and power buttons. We've tried out all of the sounds and he prefers "brook" best because it's just bubbling water sounds. The thunder one can be a bit loud and he's scared of storms so we don't use that one currently. Also, when that one is turned up louder, the thunder sounds tinny coming out of the speaker. The rest of the sounds are nice, relaxing, and sound natural. The other thing I really like about it is that my son sleeps better because of it! He wakes up occasionally during the night but he doesn't wake up scared because he heard a strange sound. At first I was thinking that we had to choose how long the sounds would play but we don't! The sounds will stay on all night until you turn it off in the morning unless you choose a timer. Overall, we are very happy with this purchase and the price was just what we had hoped to pay! Our son has slept better since we got it and it's easy for him to use himself. I love that it stays on all night and the sounds are soothing for him. It's also a great size for traveling so we can just pack it up in a suitcase to take it with us. We haven't tried out other sound machines but so far, we are very happy with this one and recommend it if you want a good, yet inexpensive sound machine! ... show more

  • Come for the white noise, stay for the rain.
Set name: 6 Sounds
This is a great little sound machine. I got it because I thought it might help with my crippling insomnia, and I was right! I'll update this review if anything happens, but for now, here's a rundown of its qualities. Pros: - Pretty good sound. Not ultra-realistic, but it's serviceable. - As far as I could tell, the sounds do not loop. A slight loop is a bit noticeable on the Ocean setting, but only if you listen for it. - Small and lightweight. This thing takes up less space than most clock radios, and it's very light. It's a simple design, very easy to use, and you only really need the included manual to brush up on care and cleaning suggestions. Seriously, this thing is foolproof. I was able to use it effectively even when I was groggy and fumbling around. - Easy to use. I mentioned that above, but it bears another bullet point. - Choice of battery or wall adapter makes it very versatile. I used the wall plug, so cannot vouch for the battery life, but the cable is nice and long. - Volume is nice. Can be either really loud or really soft. I live in an apartment, and I was able to lower the volume to a level that wouldn't disturb the neighbors. Cons: - Buttons are LOUD. They make a very loud clicking when you push them, so if you sleep with someone who is easily disturbed, you might want to make sure you set it before they fall asleep. - Some of the sounds are a little "canned" sounding. This didn't bother me so much, because I just need some noise, but it may bother others who want something that sounds exactly like the real thing. Sounds: - White Noise: This is the one I tried first, and it's the only one I really got the machine for in the first place. It is a soft whooshing sound, similar to a fan. Unfortunately, there was a very soft, barely noticeable buzzing in the background. My husband couldn't hear it, but I can, and it gave me a headache. Your mileage may vary on this one. Not sure if it's in every unit or just mine, but it's one of those things that not everyone will be able to hear. - Brook: The second sound I tested last night. It's a nice, bubbling water sound. Again, though, it has some undertones that disturbed me. The murmuring made me nervous for some reason. When I tested the sounds during the day, this was the one I thought would become my favorite. At night, though, it just kept me up. Again, your mileage may vary. - Rain: The third sound from last night's test run, and this one put me out. After being riled up by the first two sounds, I clicked over to Rain and... ZZZZZZZZZzzzzz. It was so relaxing! Honestly, if this machine does break down on me in the future, I'm going to consider ordering another one just for the rain sound. It is not super realistic, but it's just the right kind of soft sound that puts me to sleep instantly. - Ocean: This is a nice sound that I have not tried to fall asleep to yet, but I can see using this for meditation. There is a very slight loop of the wave sound, but it's not really noticeable unless you're listening for it. - Thunder: Surprisingly realistic. This was the sound I had the lowest expectations for, but it ended up being one of my favorites to just listen to. Like the ocean sound, I feel that this may have a loop, but I didn't really hear it. I suppose if you listened to it for a long time, you'd notice it, but I could easily fall asleep to this one. - Summer Night: The sound I wasn't really planning on using, and after hearing it, I will most likely follow through with that plan. It sounds the most "tinny" of all six sounds, and the droning insects make me feel itchy. In summary, this is a great machine that did exactly what I needed it to do. Again, I'll update this review if it dies on me like it has on a few other reviewers, but for now, it's a permanent installment on my bedside table. I slept like a baby last night, once I turned on the rain sound. For people who are sensitive to minor tones and low tones, I recommend the rain sound. Thunder and Ocean would be great, too. And for the price, this is a really good starter machine. If you're like me, and you're just curious to see if a little background noise will help you sleep better, you should definitely consider getting this, even if you plan on getting a more expensive model later. ... show more

  • Just works, and works well. If it's good enough for a baby, it's more than good enough for me.
Set name: 6 Sounds
A story: construction has begun nearby me, and the ground works make my house shake. I can feel it in my bed, and can hear the whirl of heavy machinery inside my bedroom. That's what caused me to buy this noise maker. I needed something to restore my sleep, or at least some of it, if possible. Overall, if you are thinking about a noise maker, think about what it can and can't do. It can't drown out everything, or keep my bed from shaking ever so slightly in the wee hours of the morning. But it can disrupt the sound of machinery and give me a chance at falling, and staying, back asleep. And it does, for which I am thankful. Oh, and I bought this from some new parents that have been using it for several months and recommended it. I figure if it was good enough for a baby, then maybe it'd help me sleep like one. Real review time: Pros: I like that it has a plug, and also the capability for batteries, meaning I can take it on the road (camping, or a hotel room with poor plug situations). Furthermore, the six sounds it has means I can vary from one to the other, so if one noise isn't helping me sleep at night I can try another one. I've played around with all six of them, and have my favorites, but all of them work well. It also has three different timer settings, which I use to help me fall asleep (rather than worrying about staying asleep in the mornings) which I greatly appreciate. It can also be left on, which is nice for having it playing throughout the night and into the morning. It is simple, easy to use, and just does the one thing it is supposed to do: make noise that helps one sleep (or concentrate if you want to use it at work for nice background noise, but that's a different type of review). The sound is good from softest to loudest (I like somewhere in the middle), and it is small, compact, and aesthetically pleasing. Cons: At this time, I can't think of any. I hope that it lasts a long time, so I have some additional testing to do. Price though: I got mine for almost half off, which makes this more than worth the value. Would I have paid the full price and been as happy? No, but I'd still be sleeping just as well, which means I'd still be happy. And at sub-$20 price for which I got it, this is more than worth it. ... show more

  • Perfect little noise machine with just the right amount of presets
Set name: 6 Sounds
The first time I encountered this machine was at an Airbnb, and it was love at first sound for me. I raced home to get one for myself because every sound option just hit the right note for me. My partner was equally impressed and ended up getting one too. The summer night setting has become my nightly ritual; it's my absolute favorite. What's great is that all the other sounds are equally enchanting, and there's no annoying loop that keeps me awake—something I've struggled with other noise machines. Plus, it's super portable and can crank up the volume when needed. The design is sleek, minimalist, and user-friendly. However, there's one thing that bugs me: the power cord. It's not a standard type, like USB-C, which means you can't just swap it out easily if you need to. You're stuck with this long, not-so-pretty cord that doesn't flatten out and loves to get tangled in itself. The saving grace is that the USB brick is replaceable, so there's at least some flexibility there. ... show more

  • Soothing rain or snuggle in a quilt mood setter while listening to thunderstorm sounds
Set name: 6 Sounds
We live with two cats and a dog in the house, a dog who stays on the enclosed back porch with a pet door, and two larger dogs who go to bed in a metal building with access to an outdoor pen. All of these friendly fur people create various noises throughout the night. The constant movement of the indoor animals, the pet door flapping and the barking alerts of the outside dogs when the country rabbits, possums and raccoons go marauding about, all attribute to an often interrupted night's sleep. Oh yes, and the husband snoring doesn't help much either. Therefore, I decided to partially mask some of the sounds, not all, but some. I still want to be able to hear if someone is breaking in or an animal is in distress. In reading the reviews of the sound machines available, I decided to purchase the Big Red Rooster. Rain is my dream maker and the rain sound on this machine is wonderful. The loop of playtime is not noticeable and a thunderstorm (without actually having to worry about lightening striking the house!) is soothing. It can be set for 15, 30 or 60 minutes of playtime but can also be left on all night if no time limit is set. The volume control goes from very very soft to louder than anything I would want to go to sleep by. It comes with an AC adapter which I leave plugged in but batteries can also be used. The box is very small and unobtrusive on my bedside table. I'm quite happy with the sounds and ease of operation. Update 4/18/17: I cannot begin to say how much I've enjoyed my little sleep enhancer. I've had it for almost a year now and use it every night and daytime naps. I think my cats are becoming addicted to it, too. ... show more

  • Poor quality copy cat imitation of a once fantastic sound machine
Set name: 6 Sounds
Why did you pick this product vs others?: We first got a Big Red Rooster sound machine years ago. It was fantastic quality and used every single night in my son's room. He especially loved the "summer night" sound. When it finally started to die, I came back and ordered another without looking at updated reviews. It had been so fantastic, I presumed that would continue. W.r.o.n.g!!! Our dearly beloved original limped along for a few months, right on past the return date. We opened the new one last night. It is horrid. It may be styled in copy cat version of the original, but similarities end there. Cheap quality in your hand. Buttons feel wobbly. Sound machine is flimsy. The plug sticks out so much we can no longer use the outlet behind the dresser where the other one sat. The cable barely fits into the adapter. I had to try 6 or 7 times just to get it turn on. We finally have sound. Then my 9 year old pressed his favorite "summer night" and it sounded so much like an alarm going off that his eyes grew large. Whoever developed the Big Red Rooster must be heartbroken over what has become of what was a beloved part of nighttime in home after home. Learn from my mistake. DO NOT BUY. THE BEST SOUND MACHINE IS NO LONGER, R.I.P. ... show more
