Frequently asked questions

The Westinghouse 15000 Watt Generator offers a convenient remote electric start with an auto choke feature, allowing you to start the generator easily from a distance. Ensure the generator is placed outdoors in a well-ventilated area, turn the fuel valve to the 'on' position, and then use the remote start key fob by pressing the start button. Make sure the battery is charged for the remote start to function correctly.

With 15000 peak watts, the Westinghouse generator can power several key appliances and circuits in your home during a power outage. However, the capacity to power your whole house depends on your home's total power consumption. It's transfer switch ready with 30A and 50A outlets, making it easier to connect to your home's electrical system safely. Consult with a professional electrician to understand if this generator meets your specific home backup needs.

Despite its powerful output, this Westinghouse generator is designed with portability in mind. It features sturdy wheels and a handle, making it easier to move to the desired location. However, due to its size and the power it offers, it is heavier than smaller models, so some effort is required to move it.

To ensure the long life and efficient operation of your generator, regular maintenance is essential. This includes checking and changing the oil as recommended, cleaning or replacing the air filter, checking the spark plug, and ensuring the battery for the electric start is charged. Always refer to the manufacturer's manual for specific maintenance recommendations and schedules.

  • Works well - major power and great value - smooth starting
Style: 28000W + CO Sensor
The product worked right away and was quickly cranking out 18000 watts for our house. I really like the electric start and the battery was full when it arrived as well. I installed to 50A inlets and connected them to the 50A outlets through a Generator cord. Works great--just make sure you get a good cord (NEMA, etc.) The unit, like most other large generators is loud, but we've been able to find a good spot for it where a some fencing blocks most of the noise from the main house. Beyond that, it IS very heavy. I can wheel it around on level ground in the grass but not up any sort of hill. I eventually used a very small winch to get it up a hill where we needed it to go. I was able to unbox it and set-it up without an other help. The best thing I like about this is the value. It lets me do whole house power, reliably, with dual fuel for less than $4000. As long as you're willing to do a little work for yourself in set-up, I think it's a great deal versus an installed whole home generator. I also like the flexibility of the dual fuel. I am planning on using propane as much as possible, but it's nice to know that I can switch to gas in an extended outage, assuming I can drive out to the gas station and/or keep enough gas around. Overall very satisfied. ... show more

  • I wish I'd found this sooner!
Style: 15000W
With annual storms in my area on the rise, I find myself losing power more frequently and for longer durations, each year. With that in mind, my old 5kW, pull-start Generac just wasn't cutting it, anymore. It's been ultra-reliable, but I'm fed up with running (unsafe) extension cords to critical items (refrigerator, freezer, etc.), struggling to pull-start it, and the terrible racket it makes. Time to buy something decades newer... I thought I had settled on a CAT RP12000E portable generator, as it's got a 670cc engine capable of running a claimed 11.2 hours on a single tank of fuel at 50% load. That's a smaller engine than the 713cc Westinghouse … producing the same 12kW(run)/15kW(surge/start) power ... with a 0.6 hour longer runtime than the claimed 10.6 hour runtime of the Westy. Plainly put, the CAT is more efficient. It can also be serviced by ANY CAT dealer - which is a huge plus if it breaks down. So why did I ultimately settle on the Westinghouse WGEN12000? Because it had the right combination of features, functionality, and price to suit my needs. As of this writing, the CAT RP12000E is $2,877.95+tax, whereas the Westinghouse WGen12000 was $2,199.00+tax. To me, the aforementioned efficiency just isn't worth $678.95 because a) a fuel refill ~0.6 hours sooner won't bother me, and b) $678.95 will buy quite a bit of fuel should the need arise. Similarly, the ability to obtain CAT service for the CAT RP12000E easily, while a big deal, is rendered largely moot by the fact that if the generator fails when I need it … I'm out a generator (no matter who makes it) until it's serviced -- and by then, the crisis for which the generator was required will likely have already abated. Given this, Westinghouse's 3-year residential warranty and lifetime technical support … seemed adequate for my needs. Last, very late in my research (when I had all but decided on the CAT RP12000E), I recognized a new need (i.e. threw in a new criterion) that the CAT RP12000E didn't have: remote start capability. The basis for this added criterion is that my long-term plan is to construct a properly ventilated/cooled generator shed for noise reduction. Thus, the ability to remote start a generator is important to me, as it allows me to turn on fuel, set the generator to 'run', enable breakers, and then exit the building prior to starting the (loud) generator. WGen12000 PROS: * Remote start capability * Battery-operated, push-button start w/ automatic choke * Battery charging port and transformer included * Long (~10.6) hour runtime at ~50% load * 12kW(run)/15kW(start/surge) powers entire home with judicious enablement/use of high-load appliances * Has a lift bracket allowing easy transport with a front-end loader or boom pole * Quick, easy assembly (install lift bracket, attach wheels , connect battery, add oil and fuel -- all done!) * Handles used for ground transport have vibration-damping pads between them and generator frame (nice surprise!) * Good warranty and support from a trusted and reliable manufacturer * Superior price, features, and functionality with respect to comparable (i.e. apples-to-apples comparison ) models * Palletized and delivered via lift-gate service after carrier-buyer coordination (mine arrived in perfect shape) WGen12000 CONS: * Very heavy * Limited Availability - The WGen12000 doesn't appear to be well-stocked anywhere, as of this writing * The Westinghouse cover sold on Amazon is too small to fit the Westinghouse WGen12000 If I had a second residence, I'd likely be buying a second one of these... ... show more

  • Died after six months and only 9 hours.
Style: 15000W Dual Fuel
Unit stopped running on gas during a day long power outage, of course at 0400. Only 9 hours on it and now has been in the shop for a month. Shop says Westinghouse is non-responsive. I have burned hours on email and phone. After more research this unit has a known starter issue. There is no pull start so when the starter randomly doesn’t engage you are stuck. Shop replaced the starter and carb and it made it worse. $2500 and 350 LB unreliable generator. I will update if Westinghouse fixes the issue. 24 Jan 2024, still no generator, the shop sent it back to Westinghouse and no response from them from to either myself nor the shop on when a replacement will be provided. They just don’t respond to emails. Phone calls take an extreme amount of time and you have to provide “all” your information every time even with a case number. I am really regretting this $2500 purchase. 15 Feb 24 After escalating to the COO of Westinghouse Outdoor Power I finally received a generator. A “Highly Tested” read “used” and no idea on how “used” because they swapped the hour meter. No remote, no oil, battery old and weak. I bought a $2500 new generator less than a year ago and now have a used Piece of junk, with no idea on history or if it was properly broken in. Never will I purchase anything from Westinghouse. ... show more
