  • Economical autostart generator solution...
This is a great option if your Westinghouse generator is relied upon to produce immediate standby power at an unattended location during a power failure. The wattage rating on the ST switch is lower than the capacity of most Westinghouse generators and it will only power 120 volt equipment, but this really doesn't matter. The main thing it does is detect loss of mains voltage to automatically start the generator and supply power to the essential items connected. For most, it will be a refrigerator or freezer at a remote cabin, though we use it at a radio station to keep emergency power on the microwave link used to send audio from studio to remote transmitter. Should you need to supply emergency 220 volt or high wattage equipment, you could use this box to power a relay that would transfer such gear's power cord from mains to the dedicated outlets on the generator. As far as I know, there are no autostart generator products in this price range...seems a good value for the money! ... show more

  • Broke after 45 minutes of use... useless support staff
First, the manual lists an optional part to extend the cables by 25ft (STCORD25), which I needed in my install. When I asked support where I could get one, they told me Home Depot or Lowes. I checked both stores (in person and online), and had no luck. Couldn't even find it in their catalogs. When I told support this, they basically told me I was wrong and it must be there. (Check for yourself, it isn't.) They then found a $25 6ft option from Walmart/eBay, which would have cost more than the 25ft power cable extension that is also required (3021225C). Finally, they told me I could buy a second ST Switch from Lowes or Home Depot. Besides not wanting to purchase a complete second ST Switch for an extension to the control cable, it wouldn't even work because the cable that comes with the ST Switch is not a male to female extension cable. When I told them this, they stopped responding. Then, after 45 minutes of use, the transfer switch switched back to the (dead) utility power, and despite my best efforts to get the switch working again, the most it will do now is start the generator when the utility power goes out. It won't transfer the load or stop the generator when utility power comes back on. The support staff completely ignored me when I tried to contact them about this issue. ... show more

  • I don't know what took me so long. I don't know what took me so long.
For the life of me, I don't know why it took me so long. For 25 years I have been dragging out my wheel-less COSTCO Generac 5,000 Power Plus "The Old Red Sled" generator. It gave my all electric home most of what I needed. But as the years went on, my minimum power requirements have changed significantly and 5,000 watts is insufficient to give my bare minimum requirements. I also, really want the ability to use propane as gasoline goes bad over time. And the last power outage, I wiped out my back ripping on the recoil starting cord. Time to upgrade. My neighbors had a Duramax 12,000 Duel Fuel I was checking out during the last power outage. I was impressed, but at the $1,300.00 price tag, not so much. Then as my research continues, I run into the WGEN9500DF. The quality was on the same level as Duramax, in a slightly more compact frame, undercutting price, slightly higher starting wattage, and more options. Remote starting - I can now start or stop my Generator from my bed. ST Switch capability - With a small additional investment, I now have an Automatic Backup Generator of 2,400 Watts, 20 Amps to automatically provide heat, power to my UPS that powers my and Entertainment/Communications Control Center, and a few LED lights for my living room. This is great for shorter outages. So, for the same price as my neighbors paid for their Duramax 12,000 I also got a remote start, and automatic transfer switch. I do not need to tell you which one of us regrets their decision. ... show more

  • Automatically starts your Westinghouse generator. Automatically starts your Westinghouse generator.
A must have option for Westinghouse generators that have the ST Switch option. When the power goes out in your home, this signals the generator to automatically start up and supplies AC power to the outlet. I use it for our sump pump. You can use it for a frig or freezer. If you’re not home, it powers up automatically protecting your important item. Westinghouse generators are the only ones that have this option. ... show more

  • PLEASE READ! (if you want your switch to work) PLEASE READ! (if you want your switch to work)
The switch works great - when it works! I am removing one star, however, for the amount of effort it took me to get it working. Please read this review, if you want your purchased ST switch to actually work with a Westinghouse generator. Here is the story. Like in many other negative reviews below (and, hopefully, not above), I found my new ST smart switch NOT working with my new (purchased in Nov 2024) WGen 9500 DF generator. It would not start the generator, when utility power is disconnected. However it would stop it, when the utility power is restored (IMPORTANT NOTE: the switch shuts down the generator with a built-in 45-60 sec cooldown delay, so be patient when waiting for the switch to shut down the generator!). So, with this problem description (i.e. "no generator autostart, but normal generator auto-shutdown") I opened the case with the Westinghouse support. They were very accommodating, and immediately offered to send me the replacement "control module" (a little black box appr. 3" x 2" x 0.5" - see the picture) for the generator. For the generator - NOT for the ST switch, which appears to be OK. Turns out, there was a firmware problem in that module lately, which likely caused most of the negative reviews here (you may notice, that the reviews from a couple of years ago tend to be positive, as opposed to the more recent ones). They even suggested that I may replace the control module on the generator myself, but after a brief consideration, I figured that it would better be done by a recognized Westinghouse warranty support shop. So, I drove there with the generator and the part, they replaced it (a quick 30 min job), and after that the ST switch worked like a charm on the generator! It starts it on the utility power loss, and stops (after 45-60 sec delay) after the power is restored, just like it is supposed to do. It also charges the generator battery, while utility power is connected - all IAW the manual. So, the problem, apparently, is due to a firmware bug in the recent series of the Westinghouse generators. I am not sure, at what date it was (or will be) fixed on the new generators coming from the factory. But you can still make yours to work with the ST switch - with the help of the Westinghouse support, and warranty replacement of the generator "control module". Hope this helps! ... show more

  • Works well
I've used this several times to remotely turn on my generator, I just unplug the power cord and this starts the generator. I plan to use a relay switch to cut power to then start the generator, this makes it possible for Westinghouse generators to have the two wire start capability of expensive diesel generators. Up to 20amp can be supplied to the two plugs and you can still use spare plugs on the generator itself for higher loads. I love that this also trickle charges the battery. The cables are long, but maybe not long enough for this device to be indoors away from an outdoor generator. I'll probably end up shortening the cables since this will be in a weather protected generator enclosure near the generator. ... show more

  • Does not work!
Do not waste your time buying this. Right out of the box it does not work. It will not turn the generator on, will only turn it off. Westinghouse support can offer no solutions after taking a week to get back to you. You can see about 25% of the reviews had the same issue. Update: Westinghouse had me return it and sent a new one. Still does not turn the generator on, only off. Not sure if it’s this model of generator, the 7500DF, or I’m just this unlucky. Hoping to get my money back at this point. Update: Support sent me a circuit board and told me to replace it. Had to ask for instructions only to receive very basic “remove the screws” instructions. So now I am required to fix their faulty device for them instead of sending me one that works or give me my money back. NOT ACCEPTABLE! I will never purchase any Westinghouse product again. ... show more

  • Westinghouse power generator synchronized in-house use
This unit syncs well with the Westinghouse backup power generator we purchased separately. This unit plugs into the main backup power generator and a 115v line plug for seamless energized generator and house power supply during a line outage. Great add on unit.
