  • Great Drives at a Great Price Point, but LOUD!
Capacity: 12TB
The media could not be loaded. I bought 6 of these Western Digital 12TB Gold drives as replacements for 6 x 6TB Western Digital Red drives, as it was time to upgrade the size of my RAID 5 array and these Gold drives were one of the few on a list of compatible larger capacity drives for my now aging Synology 1813+ NAS. The WD Red drives served me very well, were quiet, and I had no complaints about them at all, so this was really a decision based solely on price (at the time of purchase, the 12TB Gold drives cost $229 each) and capacity. The equivalent Red drives were about $30-50 more a piece than the Golds at the time of purchase, so I went with the Golds. The conversion took about a week's time of removing a 6TB drive and letting it rebuild the array on the Gold drives (each Gold drive was formatted completely and then had a full SMART scan done on them, none of the 6 drives had any errors or defects). However, once I converted to having all 6 of the 12TB Golds in my array, I immediately noticed an uptick in the noise level, even during normal operation. The sound of these drives when they seek or perform any kind of scan and/or data scrubbing (all the drives generally aren't going unless data scrubbing or a full SMART scan is running) is much louder than the Reds. I expected an uptick in noise due to them being "Enterprise" (a.k.a. designed for a datacenter) and 7200RPM, but I was surprised at how audible the sound is. The attached video I took to give you an idea of the noise level. The amibiant sound can be ignored (fan hum and sound of a network switch) but the "cachunk"-ing you hear is all the seeking of the drives. I recorded it with my phone on top of the NAS directly in contact with it, and then from about a foot away from the NAS so you can get a sense of the sound. This was taken during normal operation (watching a video off the NAS from a single workstation). When it's doing data scrubbing you can hear my NAS from the hallway outside the room it sits in. Luckily it sits in an office and not in our bedroom or somewhere guests would normally be. However anyone who may have their NAS or server in their bedroom or near a workstation you use frequently would likely get annoyed by the constant sound of the seeking of these drives. If this sits in your basement or a closet somewhere, you'd probably have less of an issue of the sound. It also may be because I use a NAS rather than a server that might have more sound dampening built into it. Other than the noise, however, the performance of these drives is great. Not really a noticeable improvement over the Reds, but the price per TB and the extra warranty is awesome. I still highly recommend these drives, just be wary of the increased noise level, especially if you are moving from a non-Enterprise 5400/5900RPM drive to something like these. ... show more

  • Gooood
Capacity: 4TB
A bit expensive, but running strong for 2+ years almost uninterrupted. Just don't let it heat over 50 Celsius

  • Its a Western Digital
Capacity: 10TB
Not as fast as expected and runs hot that's bothersome but it runs smooth compared to the segate 7TB I had I was worried the segate would crash on me. The segate if you put your hand on it as its running felt rough and bumpy the WD is smooth.

  • Pretty good but loud.
Capacity: 10TB
Got it in 2022, registered it and the warranty lasts till 2027. Works pretty fast, on par with the black edition from what I can tell. But it’s not silent by any stretch of the imagination and it actually pretty loud. But the gold edition isn’t meant for basic desktop usage but for heavy server usage from what I have read where the noise isn’t an issue. If you are buying this for a NAS server or something like that, should be fine overall. But if you are buying it for desktop usage, I recommend you use it as a storage drive and not a boot drive. Definitely worth the money I got it for given the abuse it can take and keep the speed up. Using this to hold videos, pictures and small games that don’t need to load a lot won’t be an issue, but if you use it for big games or stuff that requires a lot of hard drive activity and it will let you know it if you are anywhere in the same room with it. ... show more

  • Best for the money
Capacity: 18TB
I have used most the top brands....over the last 10 years. I currently run just under 100TB in my desktop, which mostly consisted of the 6TB 12TB drives...and now updated to 18TB slowly. WD Black and Golds thus far I haven't had a single failure in 15 years..... with EVERY other brand usually being replaced due to failure. One thing..... I do NOT use these as working drives. I use SSD..... i DID use two 6TB ssd in raid 0 for about 5 years with no issues.... I JUST replaced it with an SSD, to gain some speed and another sata port back. 18TB is a LOT of data on one disk. As a photographer I shoot about 5-6 TB per year of pics and video. I have adopted my older 12TB drives as the backups in a box... and added the 18TB last fall and this spring as my onboard archive drives.... Thus far.. they have been great with no issues...and no noise... at least that I have noticed. I don't recommend these for much more than archive and backup..... they make FAST onboard archive drives.... hitting speeds regularly of 190-220MB/sec sustained until you get to the last 25%, then they slow down to the more average 120-150MB/sec Packaging. I have NEVER gotten a drive in an envelope, every drive came in an OEM box with the appropriate cardboard or plastic drive suspender that is in most store boxes. More recently they have come in that and bubble wrapped as well inside the box... with two drives even coming in a special box for two drives suspended. IF YOU SHOULD RECEIVE a drive that was just in some envelope and not in an suspended protector inside the box... most likely its not coming from this seller or is being fulfilled by another party. DOCUMENT The wrapping well and just send it back to avoid any issues. Don't even finish taking the drive out, and ask for one in proper packaging. In my current case of nearly 6 years..(Obsidian 800d). I now only have WD black or Golds... computer never shuts off no failures. ... show more
