Description

The classic novelization of one of Broadway’s most enduring and beloved musicals, updated with a beautiful new cover. Maria is young and innocent and has never known love—until Tony. And Tony, searching for life beyond the savagery of the streets, has discovered love for the first time with her, too. But Maria’s brother is the leader of the Sharks and Tony had once led the rival Jets. Now, both gangs are claiming the same turf and with tensions rising to the point of explosion, it seems there is no way to stop a rumble. Tony promised Maria that he would stay out of it. But will he be able to keep his word or will their newfound love be destroyed by violence or even death? Evocative and unforgettable, this novelization brings out all of the depth, drama, and beauty of one of the most enduring stories in the history of American theater. Read more

  • Excellent novelization of West Side Story
I saw both films, in 1961 and 2021. I loved both, but over time the first movie became dated, and a bit plastic. The Steven Spielberg movie may stand the test of time. The novelization is why. It fulfills the hate, love, racism and raw emotion of the story. Of what it was meant to tell us, and Spielberg wisely incorporated all of that into his movie. Loved the book, loved the more genuine 2021 film adaptation of Irving Shulman's excellent novelization. ... show more

  • Great novelization
Format: Mass Market Paperback
The novelization of West Side Story has been in print since 1961. That says a lot for this book and for author Irving Shulman. Shulman was able to take the plot of the musical and flesh it out into a very good novel indeed. The characters, in this version, have last names and parents who interact briefly with them—at least in the case of Tony and Maria. The book reads like a crime novel. Shulman, of course, doesn’t write of the characters singing and dancing, as they most certainly do in the stage and screen musicals. But he is very apt at conveying the essence of the songs and at times even alluding to walking that conveys dance-like movements. I have seen West Side Story countless times with many, many casts. I also have viewed the classic movie six or eight times. Reading this novelization actually was enjoyable despite the fact I knew every plot element. Shulman was a masterful storyteller. As a theater person myself, I couldn’t help thinking that actors slated to do West Side Story could benefit from reading this novel to gain insight into their characters. Perhaps it is more revealing of me than the original authors of WSS, but I had never thought of the characters as teenagers. I suppose, maybe because of the movie cast, that I figured they were in their early twenties. Shulman, however, makes it very clear these are teens, with Riff, Tony, Anita, and Bernardo eighteen and other Jets and Sharks even younger. That gives new meaning to the plot. ... show more

A very cool read. Interesting to see the story of West Side Story approached without all the music that made it so famous!
