The 16 positive stops go from 0 all the way up to 1/8 of an inch in 1/128 inch intervals. The base plate shoe even includes two v-shaped chamfer grooves for easily flattening sharp post corners. I've wanted a hand planer for a long time and a recent project final gave me the justifacation to purchase one. I was planning to go with one of the name brands, but after reading reviews I decided to give this one a shot (for the price and with the warranty it seemed like a low risk). I also decided that the added width this provides would be well worth it. I used this for a day planing red oak. I was immediately impressed by how easy it was to use and adjust, and how well it planed. For the price, I'm very please with it. Pros: Price. Width (I can plane a 4" post in one pass). And so far performace has been great. Negatives: Its rather wide, you can plane flush to a vertical face, for example. The material is clearly lower quality that most name brands. ... show more

The planer has plenty of power for removing up to 3/32" in one pass in hardwood. I used it to knock off the high spots on bandsaw milled boards, and it left a smooth finish. The carbide cutters stay sharp. I ordered two extra knife sets, as this is an unusual size, and I want to be able to use for many years to come. The depth adjustment works well, and the front shoe is in alignment with the rear. The dust chute can be directed to either side, and works well. As a planer this works great. I'll just get right to the reasons for knocking off a star. 1) It only comes with one blade. If you need it for some serious projects you'll need to go to the hardware store to get some more blades, then find they probably don't have the blades you need, then go home and order some online and delay your project a few days while you wait for blades to show up. 2) The attachment meant for hooking it to a vacuum/dust collector doesn't fit great - neither end fits snugly on the planer, and neither end fits snugly on a shop vac-sized attachment. It'd be nice if it included an attachment (or two) to cover various models of vacuums/dust collectors, and if those attachments fit snugly on the planer. Four stars. ... show more

I had a number of rough cut 4x12x60 cedar timbers to plane and this planer cleaned them up flawlessly and produced a perfectly smooth surface. I have nothing bad to say. I did however decide not to contain the shavings and saw dust and judt let it fly. I did adjust the debris to exit the planer to the right which is a great feature. It created a larger pile than expected so be prepared depending on your project. It's quieter than expected and is easy to adjust cutting depth. I turned the depth adjustment 3 clicks clockwise and left it. That made a very shallow cut each pass but all 70 feet of cuts were all perfect and clean. Read the instructions as there are a number of useful tips to get the best results. I utilized a few of them myself. You will not be disappointed. For only a few bucks more than the 6-amp model, this is a great value. Way chunkier than the smaller one, and seems to have a decent amount more power. I've been making 3/64-inch passes on some green hemlock beams, and as long as I don't push it, it doesn't bog down. I will say I had to buy 3 Wen planers before I found one where the shoe was level "enough", to not leave behind a large edge when doing side-by-side passes. The shoe on the 6-amp model was way out of whack. So, quality control is so-so. You may have to buy a couple before you get one with tighter tolerances. Still a great value compared to the blue B and yellow D brands. But one thing I wish Wen had copied was the attachment of the fence; the Wen fence attaches with one bolt near the front, so there's a pivot point that will always have some play no matter how tight you get it, and the fence won't necessarily be parallel to the shoe. The blue B's fence has two attachment points, so no pivoting. The yellow D's fence has a bar that extends through the front of the planer, so there's no side-to-side play once it's tightened down. ... show more
