  • Excellent Price Point and DOES THE JOB!
Style: Basic w/ RF Remote (400 CFM) Pattern Name: Air Filtration System
I purchased two of the 400CFM units. My shop is oriented lengthwise East and West. I placed one on the West end of my shop blowing South and one on the East end of the shop blowing North dividing the shop into thirds. My shop is 28 X36 feet so theoretically these exchange all the air in the shop approximately every 13 minutes (if my math is correct). I was amazed at how quickly and efficiently this elliptical air pattern removed dust from my shop (so who cares if my math is correct). I've been building a sail boat in my shop for two plus year now and I can say without reservation that these little units do the job. I was stunned the first time I walked into the shop after the units had been on 2 hours. The air was fresh, odor and dust free. My finishing jobs are amazingly improved as there is little or no dust floating around in the air. I actually leave them on while I'm painting (I am not spraying; if I were, leaving them on would be very bad for the filters). If you're debating getting the single larger unit, frankly, I would stop debating and get the two smaller units for their ability to circulate the air. In my location the on/off switch, timers, etc. have worked flawlessly without any mystical turning on or off. If you really want to eliminate the possibility of this happening, buy the more expensive IR controlled units which should not be subject to radio frequency interference. I purchased the less expensive RF controllers and I, especially my lungs, am as happy as one man can get with this purchase. By the way you get two controllers and in my shop one controller operates both units identically and simultaneously, so, you get an extra controller. The units are a snap to install if you have power anywhere nearby on your ceiling. If you are tall and have an 8 foot ceilings you should find a way to mount the units as near the ceiling as possible. My shop has open rafters. I am 5' 8" tall. Hanging below the rafters, my units hang a little lower than the recommended 7 feet from the floor so not a problem for me. If I were taller I would place 2X4s across the rafters and hang them, in my case, 5.5 inches higher eliminating headaches for everyone except maybe basketball players. They are far quieter than my window AC unit at any power setting. They are noticeably quieter at each lower power setting. I cannot speak to their longevity but I can say the filters are loading up quickly so I'm guessing that at least the 5 micron filter will need to be cleaned every month and I'm guessing replaced every 4 to 6 months. ... show more

  • It WORKS, and works pretty nicely.
Style: Basic w/ RF Remote (400 CFM) Pattern Name: Air Filtration System
I thought, "Well, it's on special right now and I had been wondering about getting something like this, right?" I wasn't expecting a lot from a 'hovering shop-filter', but I thought maybe it could cut down on the sanding-dust from my workshop, which is in the back room of my house. If I close the door the dust gets terrible sometimes, so...why not! Well, it was a good purchase. I used it on a day when I was sanding 'old, OLD, dry wood' which is usually AWFUL for the 'tiny-bitter-dust' sort of thing that gets into my eyes and all OVER the house. I don't know how much may have made it into the house, but this was quiet enough to run on high while I sanded, and it DEFINITELY made a difference in the "Augh, my eyes!" issue that I normally suffer from. Like, I know EXACTLY how bad this usually is; this was 'leg three of four' from a not-quite-antique 40's era not-very-cared-for chair that I am sanding and refinishing. The other two legs were so awful that I was already using a '240 sqft room filter unit' on the floor just so I could have fresh, clean air blowing at my face to keep the eye-murder away. Yes, I really should wear goggles. I am trying to remember to...and you should too. Seriously, don't get stuff in your eyes. Nobody wants to go without their eyes. Anyway, so the other two were awful, but using the same setup this third leg was not bad at all. I had to pause and clear my eyes less, and the room 'smelled like wood' instead of 'whatever that finish was that is on those legs' like before. The room SMELLS better...it's strange. it's not ionic or anything, I just guess that I have SO much crud flying around that NOT having it flying around makes it smell different. I hung it above my workbench, up out of the way of my work areas but near me enough to be a major help for things I'm doing. I bought two boxes of filter replacements at the same time, one box/pair of each internal and external filters...I'm sure I'll clog these up before long, so why not! In short; well worth my buying. It's quiet, works well enough so far, definitely moves a good bit of air, and has made my 'sanding habit' much less dusty. And it was the right width to be conveniently put up over my workbench (a touch over 17" / about 43.5cm) without me smacking tools or my head on it, so...I'm pretty pleased! ... show more

  • It works quite well
Style: Basic w/ RF Remote (400 CFM) Pattern Name: Air Filtration System
I build furniture in my spare time in my garage (12x25ft) which is also connected to the house utility room. For years I've wanted a decent dust collector for use in particular when I could not keep the garage door open while working. I purchased the WEN 3410 due to its solid reviews and price point. After a year of use I can say that it has made a notable difference in the level of dust in the air when using a table saw or sander. Mounted at approximately 7ft in height it does a very nice job of dust collection to the point where it can be clearly seen working. I was quite shocked at how much dust the filter collects and knowing that for many years I did not have anything in place. It is not dead quiet, but not on the loud side either. With a saw running or a radio playing it cannot be heard when it is running even at highest speed. The unit has a timer, which is helpful though I rarely use it, and a remote control which I almost never need to use as I can just reach up and turn on the unit from the control panel. The collector came with all of the mounting hardware, which I used to install the unit (by myself, though a helper would have made it a bit easier), and the filters were already pre-installed. It does require a 120v receptacle, which I mounted in the ceiling specifically for the unit. So far, I can say that the biggest drawback has been the replacement filters. The unit uses 2 different filters, a 5-micron outer filter and a 1-micron inner filter, which come in packs of (2) and for both packs the cost is approximately $65; not super expensive, but not inexpensive either. It is possible to clean the filters by using compressed air to gently blow them out, but they should still be replaced periodically, and if the unit is heavily used I would definitely recommend replacement filters rather than attempting to clean them. All in all I would recommend this unit for a small shop especially if there is no space for a dedicated dust collection system. It has made a real difference in the air quality in my garage when using woodworking machinery. ... show more

  • Wen 3410 Air Filtration - Very impressed for a small, inexpensive unit Wen 3410 Air Filtration - Very impressed for a small, inexpensive unit
Style: Basic w/ RF Remote (400 CFM) Pattern Name: Air Filtration System
I have a small shed-based shop - about 225 sq feet total. This means airborne particulates from my planer, tablesaw, miter saw, router, etc, will be much denser than a larger shop might experience. All the more reason to filter the air in a smaller shop. I have a dust collection system, but that only takes care of the larger chips, and particles. The smaller, finer dust particles tend to float through the air, collecting on everything, and waiting for you to inhale them. The Wen 3410 is quiet on all three speeds, very easy to hang, thanks to the attached carry handle, and the remote is incredibly convenient. The first time I turned it on, was after breaking down a large plywood panel, and routing out an area for a wood insert. I left the shed for about 15 minutes to grab a snack, and left the 3410 running. When I returned, the air smelled fresher than it's been, in this shed, since I set up shop in it. The air was clear, fresh, and obviously well scrubbed. I've only had the 3410 in use for a couple of days, so I can't comment on long term aspects. However, if the first couple of days are any indication, this unit is a keeper. I would certainly recommend this as a solid buy... UPDATE 03/16/2020: Now that I've had the 3410 for a few weeks, I have to deduct 1 star. It still does everything I experienced above, and does it well. It's still efficient, quiet, and it just plain works. However, last week, I walked into my shop, after a 24 absence, and the air filter was running. I attributed it to my own neglect to turn it off before locking up (yes, it's *that* quiet). This morning, after a 2-day hiatus from my shop, I walked in and it was running. Still, no problem with the fan, efficiency, etc., but I double checked that I had turned it off before locking up the last time. This unit simply turned itself on a couple of times... or... my shop is haunted... unlikely, since I've not had that happen with any other major power tool (which, like the Wen, are left plugged in). This is NOT presenting a major problem to me, since I simply put a remote switch in between the Wen, and the outlet, and the remote itself is kept with the Wen remote. When I'm done for the day, I'll simply turn off the power remote, and turn it back on when I'm starting a day in the shop. If there were not a simple solution, the unit would lose more stars. This should *not* be happening, and from what I've seen in the reviews, is not an isolated case. UPDATE: 4/8/2020. After using the Wen for a couple of weeks, the 2nd picture shows what I've been breathing rather than filtering, prior to the air filter. It obviously does its job well. ... show more

  • Does it work? The numbers don't lie...
Style: Basic w/ RF Remote (400 CFM) Pattern Name: Air Filtration System
As a hobbyist woodworker having fun and making items for the house or friends, any money I have to spare on tools and equipment is naturally going to go toward that new table saw rather than boring old dust control. I usually just ignore the tickle in my lungs (dust mask? what's that?) and blast my clothes clean with the air compressor at the end of the evening. We recently moved into a split level with an attached ground-level garage and, perplexingly, an air handler and with permanent cold air return located behind a leaky door from the garage. Not wanting to spread sawdust throughout my house for my family to breathe, and being kind of tired of all the dust anyways, I started looking into dust control measures. Decided to invest in a ShopFox dust collector, various tubing, and this WEN hanging filter. I guess that spot meant for my new planer will remain empty for a while longer. I looked at the various brands available- prices ranged up to $400 for units directly comparable to this WEN unit, but I couldn't see what would justify the added cost (seemed like bells and whistles I don't care about. It just needs to suck air through a filter, yeesh.), so I went with this WEN unit that seemed well rated and economical. The unit was very easy to install- it's entirely assembled and plugs right into a standard outlet. Just had to hang four screw hooks (included) into ceiling joists and attach to the unit's four bolt hooks (included) directly or with chains (included). The two filters (a 5 micron pleated filter and 1 micron pouch filter) were already installed and can be replaced in seconds. Filters seem inexpensive to replace- I'll see how long they last during this period of heavy house renovations and will plan to update the review accordingly. Using the unit is simple- just push the power button multiple times to select the fan speed. My only complaint is that it seems you need to use the remote if you want to set a run time, though there may be a way to do that directly on the unit through some combination of buttons. The interface is a simple, perhaps dated style, but I don't mind that. So far so good, but I wanted some objective determination of the product performance- sure, I might think the air is cleaner with the unit installed, but might I be biased, hoping the investment was worth giving up a tool I really want? Lucky for me (and you, if you care about this sort of thing), I work for a company that measures air and water quality (NanoSafe, Inc.), so I borrowed an airborne particulate measurement unit and made a few quick measurements. My wallet was happy to hear me say that my expectations were exceeded. I work out of my 2-car garage (~20'x25'), with one bay reserved for woodworking and the other for storage and fixing vehicles. I set up my 8' workbench with my table saw and miter saw and WEN unit suspended approximately above the end of the bench near the middle of the garage, with intake facing the saws. I placed the particle counter between the table saw and miter saw, set it to average measured particle concentrations for a total of five minutes and got to work. Over those five minutes, I worked at a standard "heavy" pace as if I were performing several cuts in sequence. In that time I made 4 rip cuts along a 24" pine 2"x4" (slow going using a fine 60 tooth blade- selected on purpose for maximum dust generation) and a handful of miter cuts to fill in some of the extra time. Lots of dust floating around- it's important to note that I was using the equipment (both DeWalt, FWIW) in their default state WITHOUT anyother dust collection unit attached- the table saw was just spitting the dust right out and the miter saw had its default cloth bag attached which catches some of the bigger chunks the blade tosses in its direction. This is probably unfair to the WEN, as I imagine basic point-source dust control measures are expected, but I figured I might as well see what it can do. Results are next; quick notes about the particulate matter terminology so that the numbers make sense. I concentrated on three particle size categories- 10 micrometers or less in diameter (PM10), 2.5 micrometers or less (PM2.5), and 1 micrometer or less (PM1). How bad these sizes are for your lungs depends on particle shape and composition to some extent, but generally, PM10 is considered inhalable, PM2.5 penetrates fairly deeply into your lungs, and PM1 is just gonna keep on going into lung tissue, with the smaller end getting into the bloodstream. Ideally I would have measured ultrafine particulates (i.e. nanoparticles- PM0.1), but I didn't want to risk that very expensive equipment on my side experiment. Since the WEN has 5um and 1um filters, I figure this would be a fair. Measurements were made in micrograms (ug) per cubic meter of air, and categories are inclusive- so PM10 includes EVERYTHING below 10 micrometers, including PM2.5 and PM1. Four sets of data were collected. First, I measured the garage air in its ambient state- nothing on, and work had not been performed yet that day. Second, I performed my 5-minute series of cuts without the WEN or any other filtration or ventilation while measurement was happening. I allowed the WEN to run on high for 90 minutes before collecting a third set. Finally, I performed the 5-minute work series again while the WEN ran on high and measurements were active. For reference, the US EPA standard limit for daily outdoor PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations are 150 ug/m3 and 35 ug/m3, respectively. Results below- measurements are micrograms per cubic meter: 1: Ambient Garage Air. PM1= 4 ; PM2.5= 5 ; PM10= 31 2: Heavy Woodworking, No Filtration. PM1= 21 ; PM2.5= 155 ; PM10= 4291 3. 90mins After Heavy Woodworking, WEN on HIGH. PM1= 2 ; PM2.5= 3 ; PM10= 17 4. Heavy Woodworking, WEN on HIGH. PM1= 10 ; PM2.5= 84 ; PM10= 2755 Conclusions: 1. Woodworking makes lots of dust. I probably should have installed dust collection equipment a long time ago. 2. With the WEN unit located about 4-6' away from the saws and on HIGH, it was able to cut dust concentrations nearly in half during active work even though I didn't have any direct dust control measures in place. 3. The unit cleaned the air in my 500ft2 garage very quickly once the work was done. After 90 minutes on the highest setting, PM2.5 was down to 3 ug/m3 and PM10 was 17 ug/m3- inside my kitchen on the same day (no cooking yet that day, and before all of the cutting down in the garage), PM2.5 was 9 ug/m3 and PM10 was 105 ug/m3. Yes- the WEN made my garage air cleaner than my house air. Maybe I should hang one in my living room. Overall, the unit performs extremely well. If you're in a hobbyist space like mine (i.e. a garage or small workshop), you probably don't need to spend the extra bucks to get a higher CFM unit- the 400 CFM movement of the WEN does just fine. Once I get my ShopFox dust collector set up to suck sawdust straight from the saws, it'd probably be fair to run these experiments again under a more intended use scenario. If I can make the time and borrow the equipment again, I'll update this post. Also, updates will come as the unit is used for longer than one day and any other performance/longevity characteristics become apparent. As of now, I'd say these numbers earn my hearty recommendation, and I consider this unit money well spent! ... show more

  • Quiet and effective
Style: Basic w/ RF Remote (400 CFM) Pattern Name: Air Filtration System
I built a dust collector with a shop vac, 5 gallon bucket, dust separator and a PVC manifold to run flexible hoses to each saw. It does ok with the large particles but didn’t collect any of the smaller particles. It is also very loud. I purchased two units based on recommendations I read on line. The consensus was mounting 2 units at either end of a 450 sq ft shop facing opposite directions would be more efficient and effective. Also my saws are at one end and my sanders and planer are at the other end. I haven’t mounted them yet as I will have to do something different from instructions. I did set them on benches at either end of my shop, turned on high and set timer for 1hr. I then put on my PPE and turned on my leaf blower. Walking around the shop kicking up all the sawdust covering everything. In less than 5 minutes the filters were covered in sawdust dust. The units are also surprisingly quiet. The filters are easy to access and replace. I am extremely happy so far. Can’t wait to get them mounted to the ceiling. ... show more

Style: Basic w/ RF Remote (400 CFM) Pattern Name: Air Filtration System
I have a garage shop, and have to share the space with everthing midwesterners would store in a basement. Dust has been a real problem, settling on everything. While I often wear a dust mask and have my tools attached to a vaccuum dust collection system, I still wind up breathing in a lot opf particles. This system cleans the air both while working and after I've blown dust off of surfaces. It was easy to install, is quiet and I love the timer feature. I keep the remote fastened to the wall next to the doorway, so I won't lose it. I strongly recommend this product and brand-- I have other Wen tools and am always impressed with the price:quality ratio. ... show more
