  • I am disappointed: prone to grease fires, uneven heat distribution, and terrible app
Style: Pellet Grill
The media could not be loaded. I am going to be updating this review to provide more info, but I want to get this out for anyone on the fence about buying a SmokeFire since reviews are scarce since it is so new. I'm a big Weber fan and was excited about ordering the SmokeFire as soon as I heard it was announced. I had been planning on getting a pellet smoker for a long time. I received my pre-order the first Saturday after it was available. I seasoned it as instructed and cooked hamburgers at high heat. They came out excellent. That night I smoked a brisket overnight to eat for lunch on Sunday. Smoking meats long and slow is the primary reason I bought this smoker and I have been left feeling nothing but disappointed with the purchase. The SmokeFire has the following issues: 1. Prone to grease fires: The design of this grill allows for all grease to drip into the bottom of the smoke chamber and diverts that grease toward the center of the grill to the firebox. During a long smoke (brisket, pork shoulder) a significant amount of ash is produced; the majority of which does not go down into the ash collector drawer, but spills out around the fire box. Once the food starts to drip grease, it coats the bottom of smoke chamber. The ash then sticks to the grease. This eventually causes a large ash-grease mud mixture to build up around the firebox and blocks the grease channels from draining properly. The fan on this smoker/grill can blow hard at times and then blows embers out of the firebox into this grease-ash mud mixture which will almost guarantee a grease fire and in-fact did cause a grease fire at about hour 12 of smoking the brisket. Even if there wasn't a grease fire issue, why would they design this so that the ash and grease can mix together? Other pellet grills have dedicated drip trays that collect the grease and divert it out of the smoke chamber. Weber actually directs the grease directly TOWARD the firebox which is producing all the ash. 2. Uneven heat distribution: In my EX6 the right side of the grill just to the right of the firebox and center heat deflector is MUCH hotter. This was first apparent during the seasoning process when the flavorizer bars just to the right of center deflector changed colors due to the extreme heat when the bars to the left had little heat discoloration. Weber advertises that the grill was designed for even heat distribution; this is simply not true. 3. Bad temperature readings: I am not sure if the cause of this is a faulty OEM smoke chamber temperature probe or due to placement of the probe, but the temperature I measured independently of the Weber probe was ~30 degrees less than the temp I set the smoker to. So to achieve an internal smoke temperature of 250 I had to set the smoker to 280. The distance between my probe and the weber probe was ~3 inches. 4. The app is terrible: You can't see real time temperatures of your food. You can't see actual internal air temperature, just the temperature you set the grill to. There are no features such as temperature logging to display a graph of temperature over time. Navigating the app is clumsy. If this is user error on my part, then Weber needs to do a better job at designing the UI to get basic information you want from a smoker. 5. The way to pellet hopper and pellet level sensor is designed gives false readings. The left side of the hopper has a much steeper slope than the left. So, as the pellets are used the left side empties first while quite a bit on the right side remain high up in the hopper. After smoking for 8hrs, about half the pellets had been used. The auger was visible and the low-pellet warning went off. But, the hopper was still half full. I simply pushed the pellets from the ride side to even them out. Just seems weird this wasn't apparent during testing. I don't know if over time that this pellet feed issue would lead to a flame out due to pellets not feeding properly, but it is most certainly possible. Conclusion: Fortunately all of the software issues can be improved with future updates. Unfortunately the inherent design of this grill is flawed. Allowing all of the grease to collect at the bottom of the smoke chamber and then divert it toward the hottest and dirtiest part of the grill that is spewing embers and ash is unforgivable. At the very least having to clean up a greasy muddy mess would be a pain. At the very worst you are going to be burning up your food when that ash-grease-mud catches fire. Weber advertised an improved ash collection design and not having to use a shop vac to remove the ash as often with competitor smokers. I don't see how this was not discovered during testing of the product. Sorry Weber, but you dropped the ball on this product. I am sad too, because I have been waiting for it to come out since it was announced. This was the first time I ever pre-ordered anything and it will be probably be the last. Thank you Amazon for your support and return policy. Update: I've added photos of how the bottom of the smoker looked after the 12 hour brisket smoke. You can see the grease/ash mixture on the bottom of the grill. I added the foil before the smoke because it was obvious that grease was going to get everywhere and mix with the ash. What i didn't predict is just how much ash ends up inside the grill and just how little ends up in the ash tray. Probably 4:1 ratio of ash in grill to ash in the ash tray. A photo of the hopper is included to show how the pellets do not feed evenly. I do not know if it would eventually starve the unit of fuel, but it seems highly likely judging by how visible the auger inlet is. What it definitely does is trip the low-pellet sensor, so the grill thinks it has is less pellets than it does. I added another photo from a second cook I did that shows how the smoker spits out embers on the bottom of the grill. Unfortunately, the grates were in focus and not the bottom, but you can clearly see the embers. This occurred on a higher temperature when i was searing a Tri-Tip. Also added a video of the grease fire that started at the very end of the cook. I initiated shutdown mode which I think is why the fan is blowing harder than normal. Update #2: I decided to try it again smoke two pork shoulders long and slow for 14hrs. During that smoke, it flamed out twice. The first was when a "material bridge" occurred at the entrance to the auger. Then when it was cleared it dumped ~1lb of pellets into the firebox that overflowed into the smoke chamber. I had to let the grill cool down for a good 20 minutes then took me about 10-15 minutes to clean out all the pellets. A lot of the pellets also fell into the grease at the bottom, so to prevent another grease fire I had to remove them. The second flame out occurred due to the material not feeding down the shallow slope of the hopper. The pellets on the right side eventually get hung up and even though has a good 7-10lbs of pellets still in the hopper it flamed out again. For the second cook I didn't line the bottom of the smoker with foil in case that was the cause of the ash clogging the drain channels, it still clogged up, but I never saw a grease fire. But embers actively fell into the bottom of the grill, so it's just a matter of time. Everything I've tried to smoke low and slow just hasn't worked out (brisket and pork shoulder). Everything I have grilled at high heat has turned out great (tri-tip and burgers) Update #3: I returned the grill 3 months ago but I never deleted the app. To my surprise, I started getting updates on my app that the grill was operating. So I'm assuming someone purchased the grill I returned and my app is still linked to the controller. This means I can adjust their temperatures or shut down the grill whenever they are using it. I have no idea who owns it or where they are in the country. Seems like a huge security flaw for Weber. ... show more

  • Changed my mind after watching YouTube
Style: Pellet Grill
I am glad I watched the YouTube videos for the Smoke Fire. I just canceled my order that I placed clear back on Dec 26th. I am now considering the Rec Tec RT700.

  • This grill is expensive crap wish I can give negative stars
Style: Pellet Grill
Followed instructions and initial startup. Grill started up and did not get to temp, and eventually lost temp. Eventually got it to work and cooked some chicken. Next day attempted to cook and initial start up temp would not rise past 80 degrees. Checked burn pot and found that glow plug did not heat up pellets. Also noticed pellets came out of burner pot and pellet dust was everywhere. Nothing like video of operation prior to buying. Had to wait 20 more minutes for shut down even though temp was 80 degrees. Restarted grill and set temp to 490 degrees. Waited 40 minutes and temp only goes to 400. Will not go past that point. Open door, Lose 40 degrees and wait for ever again to get to 397. Called weber and i was placed in an eternal hold. I am returning this crap. ... show more

  • Glow plug already broken. 😒 #disaster
Style: Pellet Grill
Glow plug out after first use. Suppose to get part in next few days, will update if things change. Seems like Weber rushed this, hopefully they’ll figure it out. Update: Tried the fix, work for one cycle then done. This thing is a an major accident waiting to happen with the grease buildup. Sending mine back, Amazon suppose to pick up later in week. Update: Amazon picked up the grill with no issues, waiting on my refund. Will update when that happens. Final Update: Amazon refunded without any issue. Thanks to Amazon for the excellent customer service. Weber rushed this, then played the blame game, and now is finally issuing replacement parts for the grill. Luckily I purchased mine from Amazon. ... show more

  • Read before you buy- ITS DANGEROUS! FIRE HAZARD.
Style: Pellet Grill
To be clear - this is my 1st pellet grill so I do not know how others work but this is how my first 5-6 times using this pellet smoker has gone and my experience. 1 - set up was easy. but my only thoughts was I wished the end caps were a little more stout. They look like they will leak smoke and not last for years at all. Time will tell. 2 - downloaded the app. the updates did not load correctly. 3 - My first start up - set the grill to heat up to 600 like the instructions. within 10 minutes it was not heating up and had been put in auto shut off mode . I left it alone for 1 hour and then restarted it. 4 - on restart - I set for 600 deg again. while heating up the bbq was set ablaze. when I did the 1st start up the pellets kept falling into the hopper and overloaded it and they spilled all in the grill when it said it was in shut down mode. I did not notice this and on the 2nd restart they all lit on fire and started to go into the pellet storage. I caught it in time so the fire did not go all the way up to the pellet storage hopper. I was frustrated so left it till the next day. 5 - the grill was set to 600 deg. and it worked and stayed at 600 deg for 1 hour. the pellets however did not move down to the hole that feeds to the grate. It kept saying - low on pellets. I had plenty but they did not move down properly. need more of an angle. so now I have to stay by the grill to make sure pellets get down the hopper. 6 - next day - went to cook burgers - turned on grill at 350 - within 10 minutes the screen read that the glow plug is not heating up. no heat source and again - it dumped about 5lbs into the grill with no fire/heat. I caught it this time so removed the pellets before turning on again. 7 - turned on grill 30 minutes later and cooked burgers. burgers were great but the grill for sure had cold and hot spots. I had to move the burgers around to cook evenly but tasted great. 8 - Sat. night. Cooked a pork butt. put cooker on at 10pm at 200 deg. it smoked great until 5am. at 5 am the low pellets came on so I had to push pellets in the hopper again. then around 8am the screen again said - no heat source - machine shutting down. the glow plug again had no heat and 5lbs of pellets came down the shoot. Also - the app on the phone showed me the temp. but I could not see the temp. of the probe that came with the machine or could not set any cooking temps also on the app. it kept shutting off. so I had to move the pork butt to the oven for the next 5 hours of cooking. The pork did taste awesome and had plenty of smoke. Conclusion - I bought this pellet grill so I don't have to do the amount of work I do with my regular smoker. With that said - I have to do twice the amount of work with this fire hazard. Food was great but I have never cooked without having it shut down or almost burning my porch down. Could not be more disappointed but will try again this week and if it improves I will come back to this post. But how do you return a $1200.00, 180lbs Turd? REVISED - I MADE THIS 3 STARS NOW. WITH MULTIPLE UPRAGES THE GRILL WORKS MUCH BETTER. HOWEVER, THE HOPPER DOES NOT WORK WELL ALLOWING THE PELLETS TO GO INTO THE HOPPER. I AM ALWAYS HAVING TO DO THIS MANUALLY. STILL GET MULTIPLE GLOW PLUG FAILS.... BUT THE FOOD THAT COMES OFF IT IS AWESOME! REVISED AGAIN! - I just can't spend any more money on expensive briskets and ribs only to get ruined by this smoker. The grill worked as it should for about a month hence my last review. But since then it has been all down hill. I added 2 pictures. The temperature control just doesn't work. I put my briskets on at 10pm. It held at 250 until 4am. I checked at 4am and the temp was 350. I shut the machine down. cleaned it and restarted. It held at 250 for about 45 mins. I then had to baby sit it until morning because it would not get under 305deg. The exact opposite reason why i bought a pellet grill - I didnt want to babysit it. The other picture shows the flames catching the hopper pellets catching on fire. Yup - had a fire in the hopper! Awesome and dangerous. Then the grill did an auto shut down because the flame went out on its own. You litteraly have to sit beside this grill the entire cook because you never know what it is going to do - Turn off?, Get to hot? Light you hopper on fire?, spit out 2lbs of pellets into the fire? Nonetheless, Briskets ruined/burnt and again we had to buy BBQ at a restaurant to feed the people at our house. Embarrassed. Again and last time. It flamed out 3 times today. Caught the hopper on fire, put 20 bucks worth of pellets down the drain..... and now the bottom grease tray CAUGHT ON FIRE! This machine is a liability and dangerous. Glad i didn't have it under my porch. See pictures. ... show more
